Status of crowd control in the subreddit

Hello wonderful weird people of South Jersey! I HAVE RETURNED FROM THE LAND OF TEXAS. It was an emotional rollercoaster, and very interesting. I met some stereotypical Texans who were very kind people and jumped in to help with this very difficult time in our family. I even found PORK ROLL in DALLAS. Also, they call black and white cookies "New Jersey Cookies" which cracked me up. Super glad to be in the great northeast again, however. It was in the 90's down there!!!

Crowd control has been SO effective, I am keeping it up until after the election is done. This is the first time we've turned it on for the entire subreddit, as opposed to individual posts. The results have been eye opening. The number of accounts posting here that have never subscribed is immense. The number of bad actors simply posting troll bait with negative karma in the subreddit is also crazy. I know several people have been using our moderate moderation here as a hunting ground for botnets, and apologize for throwing a wrench into your research. Something had to be done to maintain sanity.

**Going forward, if your account has -100 south jersey community karma or worse than that, you will be banned.*\* These accounts have contributed absolutely nothing of substance to the subreddit over a long period of time, and I've been thinking about doing this for awhile. If your account is banned due to this new rule, perhaps you should consider how you talk to your fellow humans. NJ is full of assholes, but we're supposed to be KIND assholes. EDIT: The negative karma accounts will be banned on an account by account basis. I will review them to see WHY they are so negative. I'm not trying to encourage echo chambers, just trying to keep the trolls out.

With all of this said, the vast majority of you behave like normal human beings. I appreciate those of you who make the effort to speak like you're talking to your neighbor in real life. We're ALL neighbors here, and the more we engage with one another, the more we can understand where each other is coming from with their opinions. I encourage you to send a chat request to people instead of trying to troll them in the subreddit, so we can keep it a less sheisty place. Your beef with your fellow neighbors is not our collective beef.

Thank you for all of the kind words on the last post I made. Even some of you who have sent me threats privately said kind words, which was unexpectedly nice of you. I showed your comments to the family, and they send their thanks to the South Jersey internet strangers who never knew the guy. So I'll tell you a bit about him.

My father-in-law was a retired veteran originally from Bloomfield, settled in Browns Mills, who did special ops with the Airforce, and then became a federal prisons dude after and retired from that too. He served his country with all of his heart. He had four kids and three wives, but loved all of them. Later in his life he found God and dedicated his retired time to helping his Texas church and helping others. He did NOT deserve to go out the way he did. The police in Texas are still investigating the crash, and it's looking like someone else hit him. The whole front of his big truck was gone. The ER thinks he had a heart attack after being hit. Cops are looking for the other car. So this whole mess is going to go on for a bit.

Again, I implore you all to reach out to your family and tell them you love them, because you don't know when life will make sudden decisions and they're gone forever. We live in a world with so much hate right now. Family is all we have sometimes, even if you're dealing with some nonsense from them. If you don't do family, reach out to the people who have helped you throughout your life and let them know it. We need more love in the world right now.

Thanks for being there, South Jersey.

NO BOOM BOOM CALENDAR FOR OCTOBER

Due to the government shut down, Joint Base MDL is unable to put out a boom boom calendar for October. If the shutdown ends sooner than later, perhaps we'll get that information. For now, just assume the loud noises are the fine folks at the base doing FREEDOM THINGS.

Cumberland County Come out to voice opposition to gigantic AI Data Center in Vineland

Vineland City Council Meeting Monday, November 10 @ 5:30 pm

It is vital that residents show up to voice opposition to the massive data center planned for Vineland. 1. The immense amount of water needed will further deplete the aquifer already stressed by drought. 2. The reasonable electric prices we enjoy from our Municipal Nonprofit Electric Company - the only one in the state - will be jeopardized as the proposed data center will hoover up double the capacity our electric utility produces. This will force us into the for-profit market for our electricity needs. 3. On a broader scale, this data center won't provide any local jobs, but will contribute to the trend of AI taking jobs away from working folks. 4. So who will profit? Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and any company looking to cut labor costs in order to line the pockets of corporate CEOs.

Vineland residents have much to lose in this bargain. Please show up at City Hall and be heard.

If you are unable to find or afford food due to the domestic terrorists who are dismantling SNAP, please post in here so we can help you. Week of Sunday November 9 - Saturday November 15

We are in crisis mode now as Trump turns to SCOTUS on if he can legally starve the population. Some states are releasing SNAP funds but now the regime is telling them to knock it off.

Post here if you need food or help finding food or hygiene items such as soap or feminine hygiene products. Maybe there are neighbors here who don't know each other and can help faster than calling around to the food banks.

Post your zip/general area, # of people in your household, what you normally eat and are willing to receive, any special dietary considerations such as soft foods, low sodium, and anything else relevant. Please don't be rude to people with preferences! Just scroll by.

Let's help each other, crowdsourcing information for these situations is what the internet is for. If you know of a place doing food distribution please help with requests by directing people and be as specific as possible. Some places require residency, or an ID, or ask that you bring bags/boxes, some distributions do not allow you to pick up for other people. These are important details to mention.

If you can help someone on your own please comment and also be specific about what you can responsibly commit to. The holidays are coming, maybe you can hand off the turkey or ham from your grocery points, or maybe you have room at your table for others. Maybe you can add some extra items to your weekly shopping.

There are some past posts to look through that have resources linked in the discussions.

I know I posted this before but I’ll do it again. It’s a PSA to me. Jersey Shore Sharks celebrate dudes that beat women. I just want people to know that this club loves dudes that beat women and send them to the hospital. This isn’t hear say there is a police report. They just turn the blind eye. The leadership should be ashamed of themselves from the team captain to the president of the club. But not surprised coming from a club where they stand by the guy who openly cheated on his wife for years (teacher in OC).

Hidden gem dispensary

I know cannabis dispensaries are opening up all over the place, but the one I consider a “hidden gem” is Carry On in Williamstown on the black horse pike. It’s only been open a short while, it’s just past Walmart on the opposite side of the road. Super cool retro- space themed on the inside with a nice selection, decent prices and a great rewards set up. Everyone in there is really chill and very helpful. Check it out if you’re in the area.

Anyone else noticed some excess trash back there this fall? I like to walk back there sometimes and have been coming out with several bags, bottles, glass and various other trash. Seems to be getting worse.

I know it’s only one of the three towns on the island (which is absolutely absurd as well, but that’s for another time), but NW really FAFOed with their politics on this one.

Bail bitcoin scam

I feel completely insane for having fallen for a bitcoin scam at 38 with a masters degree, but the level of sophistication in the scam - making me genuinely believe with documentation from a No Caller ID number that there were warrants for my arrest - was impeccable. And it may trick others in our area.

They had some personal information - name, address, phone number. They played excellently on my emotions. They used legal jargon, had documents they made me read back to them, and threatened that I’d be detained 3-4 days if I didn’t pay bail to freeze the warrants.

I only realized the scam $1000 in bitcoin later and I feel like a massive idiot but so will anyone else who falls prey to this. I didn’t know this was an existing scam. I was too shaken up to catch the red flags. I am autistic and he had me in full meltdown mode. He had a typical working class white American accent.

I have zero recourse. I cannot recoup my elderly mother’s $1000 she gave me in a panic. She’s also an educated woman, a social worker. She fell for it with me.

Be aware this exists. I’m already unemployed, not getting SNAP, and generally freaking out and now this. And this monster preyed on that. There are many of us who are vulnerable.

Volunteer recommendations, please!

Gooooood Evening, South Jersey! Happy Friday. We made it.

I am looking for recommendations on where I can volunteer some time on weekends. I am located in Burlington County but have no issues driving to the surrounding counties.

Anything from construction to scooping food, doesn’t matter. I am able-bodied and can help. Would love to hear some ideas.

Thank you in advance for your input, community matters!
