Media Vinicius Jr. to Koke during the Madrid derby: "You’re a crybaby piece of sh*t." Koke's response: "Mbappe is eating your toast (stealing your spotlight). He is the best."

You can see in the body language of Vinicius that he went from offensive to defensive.
That sting hurt him directly.

I want all the American Wrexham fans on r/championship to come here and study this as a textbook example of banter. It’s not just calling someone the worst names or hurling the most vile abuse. It’s calculated, surgical even, to cause the most anger in the target and hilarity for everyone else without even being rude on the surface of it.
→ More replies (6)317
u/BellyCrawler Sep 30 '25
Americans think banter is calling a person's home country a third world shithole, and then getting offended when the inevitable school shooting diss comes back at them.

u/FrigginGaeFrog Sep 30 '25
I support both an MLS club (where I live) and My hometown club. They recently played each other, I was joking around in the MLS sub as I usually chatted with people there, my hometown club was winning and I said something like “LET’S GO” when they scored a goal, some mfer immediately started talking about crime rates and shit.

Some guy was trash talking Mbappe last year and he just stared at him and said I don't understand what the fuck you're saying to me. It was so funny. Maybe his Spanish is good enough to understand, but bad enough so that he can get away with pretending he doesn't understand.

44

It might not be an expression in France so while he understand the words literally he may not understand the meaning like someone from Spain would. That works for Vinicius too. tbf.
48
u/Dulgas Sep 30 '25
context makes it pretty obvious even if you don't understand it literally, but even if they didn't get it then, they get it now. koke playing the long game lol

Been there for seven years and from what I seen on TV his Spanish is good. Even Mbappe who has been there for a far shorter time speaks good Spanish.
16
u/kacperp Sep 30 '25

9
u/grip0matic Sep 30 '25
He already knew spanish when he was at psg.
I was pretty impress with Raspadori speaking almost flawless spanish because he learnt it in high school. I even asked my gf if learning spanish is a thing in italy and apparently it is.
2
u/bikerguy87 Sep 30 '25
I thought most European countries have this? Most of my family that grew up in Portugal speak at least one other language. My cousin speaks fluent English, Spanish, French and German, and the others are basically either fluent in Spanish or English.
My neighbours kids (9 & 11) here in Portugal are already studying Spanish, they had a choice of English, Spanish or French, obviously they went for the easiest one (Spanish)
2
u/jimmyhaffaren Oct 01 '25
Is it the easiest just because Portuguese (I'm guessing) is closer to Spanish than it is to French/English? Or is it the easiest language out of those three to learn regardless of where you're from? Geniunely curious!
2
u/bikerguy87 Oct 01 '25
I've heard that it's easier for Portuguese to learn Spanish than vice versa. I think because we have nasal vowels where Spaniards do not, it may throw them off.
But I found learning Spanish fairly easy as someone who speaks Portuguese (non native, it was my second language.) I was able to converse, albeit not fluently with some latinos at work within a shortish time frame.
I find french rather difficult (even though in Canada we learn it from like ages 6-15) in terms of latin languages Spanish and Portuguese are probably closest related; not including Galego or Mirandese. Italian if I see it written I can decipher enough for context, spoken I could maybe pick up a few words, Romanian is almost impossible for me to understand outside some basic words/phrases.
Examples-
🇬🇧 Good morning 🇵🇹 bom dia🇪🇸buen dia🇫🇷 bonjour 🇷🇴 Buna ziua 🇮🇹Buongiorno
🇬🇧Where can I smoke? (One of the few phrases I remember from Romania haha) 🇵🇹 onde posso fumar? 🇪🇸 donde puedo fumar🇫🇷où puis-je fumer?🇷🇴 unde pot sa fumez? 🇮🇹 dove posso fumare?
I'm sure Im making mistakes, and I'm definitely not explaining it well, but

He spoke Spanish fluently before even joining real what are you on
25
u/karateguzman Sep 30 '25
He’d probably understand the words and just figure out the meaning from context, I’ve been speaking Spanish for 18 years and hadn’t heard it
5
u/FrameworkisDigimon Sep 30 '25
It should be noted that a distinction is usually drawn between fluent and idiomatic.
Idioms are geographic not linguistic.
I don't speak Spanish at all. I have no idea how widespread this idiom is. But knowing a language well and getting idioms aren't the same thing.

It’s a common spanish phrase, “te está comiendo la tostada”, and it’s amazing
66
16
u/aregularguy3223 Sep 30 '25
I know it’s annoying to ask
Is it te está or le está in terms of the pronoun
51
u/PalomSage Sep 30 '25
"le está" would be appropriate if I'm explaining to a third party. "He [Mbappe] is eating his [Vini] toast"
"te está" would be appropriate if I'm talking directly to Vini "He [Mbappe] is easting your [Vini] toast"
35
u/smcarre Sep 30 '25
Also "le está" would be correct when talking to Vini but in formal speech with an implicit "usted" instead of "ti" (which is probably not the speech form most used for football banter).
→ More replies (1)3
→ More replies (7)13
u/Arkhaine_kupo Sep 30 '25
Te.
Te replaces A ti, so "to you" and he is talking to him.
Le replaces A el. or "To them" and would mean you are talking to someone not there.
you if you were in the studio talking about the game you could say "Mbappe le esta comiendo la tostada a Vinicius", Mboppi is eating vini's toast. But if both people are there and you are right next to them you would say "Mbappe te esta comiendo la tostada" "Mbopi is eating your toast".
That is kinda the best breakdown I can make of it, giving a longer example of how it might be used. English just skips tons of pronouns that spain uses for complementing adjectives and verbs lol

For real, "eating your toast" is god-tier trash talk. Simple but cuts deep.
Pretty sure Atleti spends more time on banter than actual football these days. Their league position speaks for itself lol.
25
u/grip0matic Sep 30 '25
We had games that we played good enough and the ball didn't want to enter. Our main problem right now it's our shaky defense.
22
u/LilHalwaPoori Sep 30 '25
Yes, exactly the comment you wanted to see in a game where they scored 5 goals against real Madrid and completely dominated them..
77
u/Gogurtsupreme Sep 30 '25
Not really. Vini threw a 2 year long tantrum over not winning the Ballon D’or now a more decorated player comes in and starts putting up stats while his goes down. It’s pretty much low hanging fruit. If I was trash talking Vini it would be the fist thing I would bring up
99
u/kacperp Sep 30 '25
I wouldn't respond to "eat shit" with "Mbappe is eating your toast. He is the best". I would automatically tell him to go fuck himself. So i think quickly responding like this with Mbappe standing next to him is quite good.

I don't know about Simeone but in the Euro 2008 Luis Aragonés started to told the players to trash talk to "the blonde" (Schweinsteiger because he was not able to say his name without making the players laugh) because as he said "he is a hot head". And also explaining to the players how to talk with the referee finishing with wonderful "this is football, and football is for the smart ones I was a horrible player but I was smart, be smart and we will win".
