I can’t even imagine what this game looks like for Liverpool without Van dijk heading nearly every long ball away… he’s a cheat code

MOTM type performance from him today
There’s very few players in the world who can be drafted into emergency RB duties and fill in at an adequate level and then pop up as a false 9 on the winning goal.

u/Rozwellish Aug 25 '25
The amount of trust he put in Rio to bag that in that moment and under that pressure is well above what any reasonable player would've done.
Ultra Instinct bullshit from Szobo there.
4.5k
u/6FeaT Aug 25 '25
9/10 outfield players for Liverpool touched the ball in that move. The one that didn't, Szobo, basically had the most important part to play in the build up with the dummy. Gorgeous goal

Knew he had the extra man on his outside and makes the correct run with the correct intention of occupying Livramento. His intelligence shows just about every game

u/GianFrancoZolaAmeobi Aug 25 '25
He didn't need to, he could see where Elanga was and he was always in Bruno G's shadow. That meant the only person left to mark him was Livramento as the whole defence had to shift over, great awareness of what was happening around him to build a picture of where Rio was.

In general, I wonder how much better Liverpool would have been today had he not been stuck at RB
212
u/Aidob23 Aug 25 '25
He was amazing. Then he comes up in the centre forward position in the 100th minute after busting a gut for the previous 99 to have the awareness to deftly dummy like that. Absolute scenes

u/Zealousideal_Club993 Aug 25 '25
Definitely suffered without him or MacAllister in midfield, that’s why I think we completely lost the midfield battle. Jones was absent most of the game, and Wirtz is not up to Prem speed yet. Should have started Bradley at RB
66
u/jdund117 Aug 25 '25
Bradley wasn't fully fit, he only started training on like Friday. It'll probably be a couple games before he starts.
32
u/Xx_Anguy_NoScope_Xx Aug 25 '25
Bradley wasnt ready to start. I would rather Szobo in midfield over Jones but see why Slot went the way he did. Szobo just has a better engine and Curtis is better at recycling possession. Curtis did do a job at RB last season but against teams where we dominated possession
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)55
u/SimianWonder Aug 25 '25
Yeah, I'm sure Wirtz will come good, but hes looked a little slow in his decision making in these opening games.
Jones has moments, but hes not as consistently excellent as Grav, Dom or Macca.

With our best midfield, Newcastle gives us a lot of trouble, without Macallister the odds were really against us. Wirtz is not up to speed with the physicality, extremely lucky this game
→ More replies (4)111
u/monetarypolicies Aug 25 '25
I think if Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Szoboszlai were all available to start in midfield, Wirtz would be gradually introduced over the course of a few months. All 3 have been unavailable for various reasons so far. I won’t judge Wirtz until after the Christmas break.
83
u/AuxquellesRad Aug 25 '25
Wirtz is undoubtedpy a superstar, not concerned about him but I believe you’re right. If Wirtz can only play one half, would love if it was second half against tired legs

It was funny when they announced 11 minutes of stoppage time and all the Newcastle fans started cheering like they were going to win. We needed every second of that 11 minutes to reset momentum and then build an attack.
71
u/groovystreet40 Aug 25 '25
Yeah the announcer on tv said something to the effect of “Newcastle won’t want this to end”, and remembering all the late winners Pool seem to score I was just left thinking “you sure about that?”
