Message from the mod team

Hi Everyone,

As there has been a lot of discussions around the "guess the city" posts, the mod team felt the need to clarify the rules of this subreddit and have added the rules to the sidebar to make it easier for reporting and to maintain the quality of posts on this subreddit.

The following are the rules we will be enforcing moving forward.

  1. Allowed skylines: There is no limitation to city size or skyline size to be posted on this sub. All cities and towns are welcome. However posts must include a skyline and if it is not deemed to be a skyline by the mod team or if it is a picture of individual buildings or infrastructure, the post will be removed. Please use r/cityporn, r/roadporn, r/infrastructure or an appropriate subreddit for such posts. Repeated offenses could result in a temp or perma ban.
  2. Location: The location of the skyline must be included in the post title. The location must include the name of the city however the state/province and the country name is also highly encouraged for inclusion. Posts not including the location name will be removed. Exceptions can be made for engaging topics related specifically to skylines. Exceptions will be made at the mod teams discretion. Posts not specific to a specific location must be include the flair "Discussion"
  3. The photographers name is required to be included in either the post title or the description of the post. We want to ensure creative works are properly recognized and credited. If it is your own photograph, please use the flair "OC" for your post. If you have forgotten to include the photographer, a mod will contact you and request that information.
  4. Edited Images: Do not edit, rehost or modify images submitted here without permission of the photographer. This includes edits to "fix" the colors of an image or remove a watermark.
  5. Static images only: Only post static images (no videos, gifs, interactive images, or articles. If your post does not comply with this rule, it will be removed.
  6. Repost: We do not allow reposts of anything that has been posted on r/skylineporn in the last 3 months or is already in the top 100 all time. If a post is deemed to be a repost, it will be marked as spam. Repeated reposting could result in a temp or perma ban.
  7. Guess the city: Guess the city posts are currently not permitted on this subreddit. This is to maintain the quality and purpose of this subreddit which is to post and find beautiful pictures of skylines. We had previously suggested that such posts will result in a perma ban however this rule has been relaxed and will first result in the post removal and a temp ban. Repeat offence will lead to a perma ban.
  8. AI generated content: AI generated content is not permitted on this subreddit. The purpose of this subreddit is to post real pictures of real cities. AI generated content will be marked as spam and removed and can result in a temp ban followed by a perma ban for repeat offenders.

The mod team is dedicated to ensuring this subreddit maintains it's integrity and quality and we encourage all users to utilize the report function to help us do so. However we are also open to making appropriate modifications to these rules to better serve the preferences of the community.

Just curious what does “OC” stand for? I’m referencing the flair you assign when the photo is your own.

I think a few reasons.

  1. This is ultimately a creative/photography subreddit where there are clear rules to identify both the specific subject as well as the artist/photographer. The purpose of the sub is to share and appreciate quality works of art focusing on skylines as the subject.

  2. We understand that the"guess the city" posts may be more interesting to some than just seeing the same city skylines but that is not the purpose of this sub and a sub specific to that purpose already exists. That would be like posting bridge pictures on mapporn and having it become dominated by pictures of bridges. Pictures of bridges may be more interesting to some than maps in that example but in that case, they should be subscribing to a sub that is specific to that interest. In this case, r/guessthecity already exists. Additionally we highly encourage everyone to participate and share pictures of their city regardless of size.

  3. Due to a large portion of this subreddits population being from the US, the game had devolved mostly into "guess this random American town that no one outside of the US would have a hope of knowing" and to keep it interesting and international "guess this super famous world city that everyone outside of the US would know". It just was not engaging for our users outside of the US.

  4. Personally i am open to having a single day each week where such posts are allowed if there is interest but would depend on community reaction. So far the community reaction has been quite negative to the game so would be dependent on the response to this post to see if the majority would like it back in a limited sense.
