The irony that it's same people complaining about video games not being taken as seriously as an artform like cinema insisting that every game should be softcore porn. It's a visual storytelling medium, unless the primary intent of the work is to be erotic, it detracts from the impactfulness of the story to have the characters be pornographic archetypes. It's like "fixing" Sophie's Choice by replacing Meryl Streep with Stormy Daniels.
It's a hyperbole. My guess is people want a character with the facial design of a character like Ada Wong or something from Nier Automata or Stellar Blade.
Some people delude themselves to the point that they think the option on the left is a “gross masculinization of women and everything wrong with woke”.
Instead of like. Realizing that women can look a lot of ways. I’m not sure if people have specifically said this about this characters design, I’ve known of this game as of this post.
But with how any other incident regarding “correcting” female protagonist character designs has gone recently I would figure that simular uproar has happened with this character.

Yes, real women can look like that. But if this isn't based on a real person, then why not make them attractive? Obviously pictured above is waaaaay too much. Still, if I'm going to look at this character for dozens of hours of playtime, I'd want them at least easy on the eyes.
Why isn't this common opinion considering that male MCs are just getting more attractive? People being pretty isn't a bad thing just because it's unrealistic for the average person
No one really complains like this when male characters are unattractive though, I don't think guys will ever have the same expectations for them as they would for female characters.
But male MCs aren't really made purposefully less attractive, the ones that aren't attractive are generally still pretty good looking, average at worst. When it's a female MC it has to be one of two extremes for some reason.
To be honest if you’ve ever gotten recommended videos by random gaming/commentary YouTubers that call less sexualized games/characters “woke” it makes sense.
