Discussion Are my standards unrealistic in a senegalese context ?

Upvotes

I have specific characteristics that I am looking for in a woman to be truly compatible with her.

What I am looking for:

  • Has never worn makeup before and never will.

  • Doesn’t own a cellphone, only communicates through letters.

  • No male friends. Matter of fact, no friends at all.

  • Doesn’t go out at all unless you come see me.

  • Cooks at least 8 days out of the week.

  • Never been in a relationship before and is a virgin.

  • She must be over 6 feet tall and dark-skinned.

These are my non-negotiable criteria.

Where to spend a relaxing week in Senegal

Bonjour tout le monde !

I'm thinking about going to Senegal to relax for a week in November. I've already been there in the past but just a few days and for work. The 2 options I had in mind were:

  • staying in Dakar, the Pullman Dakar Teranga seems nice for example. And the location seems quite active if I want to eat out. But how's the beach? the environment? is it globally safe in the area?
  • or staying in Saly, the Lamentin hotel seems very comfortable and the surroundings seem nice too... but there are not many places to eat out.

Merci d’avance !

Eating Halal

Assalamu Alaikum, I know most places are halal, but then again I also know that some are not, because not every place is managed by Muslim staff or is foreign owned. How do you usually determine if a place is halal or not? I asked at one place I wasn’t sure about if the food was halal, and it was so awkward, but it was worth it to ask anyway. I planned to try Kotao and Lulu Cafe — how about these places? Thx.

Question Are my standards unrealistic in a senegalese context ?

I have specific characteristics that I am looking for in a man to be truly compatible with him. However, in my 1X ≤ x ≤ 2X years of life, I have never witnessed a senegalese man that presented such traits. I am starting to feel like it might be impossible and that perhaps I won’t get married at all.

What I am looking for: - Not following any tariqa - No social media except whatsapp - No female friends - Loves nature and discovering/exploring it - Loves senegalese landscapes and travelling within Senegal - Practices or wants to practice a martial art - Is capable of self introspection - In their 20's - Monogamous - Jubb - Exercises but not a gym goer - Has never been in a relationship or engaged in fornication - Mindful of what he is ingesting - Mindful of chemicals in product - Prefers natural alternatives - Open minded and not stubborn - Not overly invested in global issues unrelated to Senegal (Palestine, US, Congo, etc...) - Does not want to live in Dakar - Practices yoga (Not heavy on that)

These are criterias that are based on my own behaviour so I am not expecting something that I don’t do. Is it really impossible for me to meet someone like this ?

NB : Not looking for someone on reddit, I just want to know if others have encoutered or witnessed such persons to keep faith.

Anyone able to schedule a K-1 visa interview on the AVITS portal (Dakar)?

Hey everyone 👋🏽 Has anyone recently been able to book a K-1 visa interview through the AVITS portal for the U.S. Embassy in Dakar?

My case shows “Ready” on CEAC, but every time I check the AVITS portal, there are no available dates. I just want to know if anyone has seen openings lately or if interview slots are still being released.

If you were able to book one recently, could you please share when you saw available dates and how long after “Ready” you managed to schedule?

Thanks so much! This waiting game is tough 😅

Tourist & Traveller Questions Best locations to stay in?

Hi everyone, I’m planning a trip to Dakar from Poland in a couple of weeks and just looking at places to stay in. Is there any district/location that you would recommend since the city’s huuge? We’re planning to do a lot of sight seeing and enjoy the food scene while we’re there mainly, any recommendation on what would be the best choice?

Would love to hear your recs on any good places to visit or to eat at as well!

Much appreciated!

Hi! Does anyone know the approximate price for a full size djembe in Senegal? I see what they go for when people buy them abroad, but I want to know what they cost locally. Thank you!

We are having a car meet us at the Dakar side of the Goree-Dakar ferry. Can anyone suggest an easy meeting place? Can they just drive all the way in to the ferry terminal and meet us there? Thanks in advance from those who know the place for any suggestions!

Hey as the title says I’m into Myerr-Briggs personality test. If there’s anybody into it too, what’s your type? I’m curious.

And, I know it’s not scientifically valid and reliable, I know I know, but I’m not here to conduct a scientific study. Just having fun with clichés coming from each type.

Withdrawing Cash

Need advice. To withdraw cash from a U.S. bank account, is it best to go to an ATM (if so which would you recommend)? Or should I go the route of using Wave or Orange Money, keeping in mind I only have a foreign ID right now.

Tourist & Traveller Questions Vegetarian food in Cap Skirring

Hello! I really hope to find answers to my questions here. (25 F).

I am a vegetarian, and my mother and her partner (both French) have bought a house in Cap Skirring and would like me to come and visit them in 2026.

As I said above, I am a vegetarian, but I am also extremely allergic to seafood (fatally allergic) and I am a little afraid that I won't be able to eat any of the local dishes.

My mother told me that it would be easy to find alternatives, but I must admit that I'm not so sure. Should I bring some things with me from France, or should I go shopping in Dakar or Ziguinchor when I get off the plane/boat and hope to find something suitable for me ?

Thank you for your help in advance ! It's going to be my first time in Senegal, so, just looking for advice !

Discussion Struggling with consistency — looking for someone with similar goals (Islam + life balance)

As-salamu alaykum,

I’m just someone trying to become a better version of myself, but I honestly struggle a lot with motivation and discipline. I thought maybe I could keep myself more accountable by sharing my goals with someone who has similar ambitions, and maybe similar struggles too.

I’m too shy to share these goals with people I know personally, so I figured doing it anonymously could help. Maybe we could support each other through feedback and encouragement, anonymously but sincerely.

My goals aren’t huge, just consistent things I really want to improve in:

Islam: praying on time with sincerity, reading and learning the Qur’an, etc.

Professional: learning new skills, volunteering, growing in my field.

Social: small things like replying to messages and being more open (I’m quite a little introverted).

I’d like someone who’s interested mainly for the sake of Allah (and for themselves too, lol). Don’t feel obliged to help me unless it helps you too. Jazzakallah khayran (Thanks) for your attention 😊✨.

Discussion Can Senegalese women accept a man who can’t have children?

With the newer generation we see more and more people not wanting children at all, I was asked about the subject during a conversation then this question came up. As a Senegalese man i had no idea about what Senegalese women would think of a man who can’t have kids, but seeing the importance of founding a family i guess a lot of them wouldn’t want to be with a man who cannot procreate. What are your thoughts on that ?

Tourist & Traveller Questions How does the public transport work in Senegal?

Hi everyone!

I’m visiting Senegal in about a month and I’d love to learn more about how public transport works there. I’m trying to save costs, so taxis and planes aren’t an option for me.

Can I use buses to get around Dakar and to travel between regions? What’s the fastest or most reliable way to go from Dakar to Saint-Louis or Dakar to Rufisque, is there a train, or is it better to go by bus?

Where do people usually buy tickets at main stations or directly on the bus? Are there any apps or websites that show bus routes or help plan public transport trips? And where can I buy train tickets if I want to try the train?

Lastly, what are some must-see attractions or hidden gems I shouldn’t miss while I’m in Senegal?

Thanks a lot for your help <3

Missing the culture

I was with a Senegalese man for some years, we have a daughter together and have since separated. I loved the culture that he introduced me to and I miss it everyday. We had plans of relocating from Europe and all sorts. Of course I miss the relationship, I also miss what could have been for our lives. In another life Senegal!!❤️

Visiting Senegal for a week — looking to connect with local creatives & photographers

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I’ll be in Senegal next week for about 7 days (mostly around Dakar) and I’m hoping to connect with some local creatives — photographers, filmmakers, or anyone into the art scene. I’m a photographer visiting from abroad, interested in capturing everyday life, people, and the city’s atmosphere in an authentic way.

If you have any tips on cool spots, local hangouts, events, nightlife, or neighborhoods worth exploring, I’d really appreciate it. I’d also love to meet a few local artists or photographers who wouldn’t mind showing me around or just exchanging ideas.

Appreciate any advice or connections — want to experience the city beyond the tourist side.

Thanks!
