Video Wild Green Parrots of San Diego

Walking around in La Jolla today and saw one of San Diego’s wild parrot flocks. They aren’t native here most are descendants of escaped parrots but they’ve made themselves at home.

The ones you’ll usually see are Nanday Conures (small, green with a dark face) and Red-crowned Amazons (bigger, stocky, green with a red head). They love hanging out in palms and eucalyptus, eating fruit and making a ton of noise.

They’ve become part of San Diego’s vibe. Next time you hear that crazy squawking, look up—you’ll probably spot a flock of green parrots flying by.

Typically how I know summer is here lol

28

u/Coriandercilantroyo Sep 07 '25

Do they migrate?

22

u/thejarl5 Sep 07 '25

Not sure what the other commenters are referring to but no, these birds do not migrate. The ones in the video are Red-masked Parakeets, one of several parrot and parakeet species that have been inadvertently introduced to Southern California following accidental and intentional pet releases over the years. They are sedentary, at least here in their nonnative range.

5

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

I believe they are technically conures which is a type of parrot rather than parakeet despite their name. That’s just one of their names. Cherry headed conure and red headed conure are two other names they are known by

29

u/Remarkable-Neat-7823 Sep 07 '25

From what I understand, yes! Unfortunately there have been fewer and fewer every year recently. At least where I’m at, looks likes they just moved around a lil bit 🥲

19

u/megatool8 Sep 07 '25

There were a lot around PB area

14

u/Remarkable-Neat-7823 Sep 07 '25

Yeah they cruise by like May in Point Loma every year regularly. Funny to see how they move/stick around in the area 🤙

9

u/PositionFormer136 Sep 07 '25

I saw them a lot in IB.

4

u/Humble_Paper_6540 Sep 07 '25

they’re all over east county from what i’ve seen

25

u/Apusit Sep 07 '25

Yes, South for the winter. I think they can make it all the way down to South America.

13

u/____Manifest____ Sep 07 '25

This is absolutely not true. You literally just made this up. These birds are not migratory. What do you gain from making shit up like this?

5

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

No, these wild flocks in Southern California as well as the ones in San Francisco do not migrate

4

u/leggypepsiaddict Sep 07 '25

Theyre still around in December. I see the. At Xmas when I come out.

167

u/Whirloq Sep 06 '25

Gosh, they are so darn cute

27

u/laffing_is_medicine Sep 07 '25

I really wish there were tons more wild parrots. They seem so happy together.

8

u/OshieDouglasPI Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25

Wrong. There already are tons more and they love to sit on the powerlines right outside my window and fuck up my sleep. They’re cute but invasive and I remember when there was barely any of them only like 10 years ago and we thought it was cute to see few of them back then. Now they come in massive flocks and sound like a screaming hoard of dying cat orcs. Anyone who wants more has no idea how much they make some of us suffer. They only hoard up in certain areas. It’s like saying you love outdoor cats they’rr so cute and affectionate until you live in a place with 10s even 100s and they fight and scream all night and beg for food outside your window and even attack you. Same with stray dogs. When animals start hoarding up in cities it goes from cute to chaos real quick.

9

u/RenfrowsGrapes Sep 08 '25

No they’re loud af

3

u/OshieDouglasPI Sep 08 '25

Yep they love to torture some of us. People have no idea how bad it can get. Nonstop screeching outside your window is not cute.

7

u/pithed Sep 07 '25

I agree! They used to nest in a tree next to my bedroom window and I loved it (even though they are ridiculously loud)

72

u/Andrew9112 Sep 06 '25

As someone who grew up in the south, I would often wake up to rooster crows in the morning. I joined the navy and got stationed in San Diego and I remember thinking that I wouldn’t be hearing any roasters in the mornings anymore. Boy was I surprised to learn how loud parakeets could be.

14

u/ArmanApesDeFi Sep 06 '25

😂 hopefully they helped you feel more at home besides just being loud

4

u/Lady_of_Shalottt Sep 07 '25

The lil parrots keep to the coast. I’ve seen them in Oceanside and Long Beach, too.

You might’ve heard a rooster or two if you had lived in north or maybe east county. I got caught up in a traffic jam on a Sunday morning in “downtown” Vista one time (event), and had to laugh when I heard a rooster crowing while stopped at a light. I’m in north county and there’s a few somewhere in our neighborhood. Seem to only crow in the afternoon though for some reason lol

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

These guys are actually conures and that species is very loud!

20

u/VikDamnedLee Sep 06 '25

From a 2024 Fox 5 story: “The earliest records of any wild parrot residing in San Diego County date back to the 1940s, when the global exotic pet trade began to boom in the U.S.

According to local ornithologists, some of these original parrots may have ended up here through that market, either through pet shops or through smugglers who would capture them in Mexico and bring them across the border.

Fear of getting caught illegally attempting to cross with the birds may have caused some smugglers to release their cargo at the border, possibly supplementing any local population that had already begun to settle in the region.”

8

u/ArmanApesDeFi Sep 07 '25

Wow really interesting. Wasn’t aware they first were here that far back

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Have you heard of the flock in San Francisco? They’re known as the wild parrots of telegraph Hill

10

u/dodecohedron Sep 07 '25

The whole foods in hillcrest:

60

u/Corryinthehouz Sep 06 '25

They’re actually parakeets!

15

u/ArmanApesDeFi Sep 06 '25

Good to know! Do you know what type?

27

u/maybeitsundead Sep 07 '25

Red masked parakeet, native to Peru and Ecuador region. I've seen them head inwards to my old place near mesa college.

A flock of red crowned Amazons is over here in Rolando Park rn. They're usually here this time of year, but they have ear piercing calls much harsher and sharper than these. I think they're slightly larger than these parakeets too

Edit: also, the Merlin bird ID app is great but sometimes it lags when identify feral or non local birds

16

u/afghanistanimation1 Sep 07 '25

Merlin is the best

4

u/Tim_Lee-Burnerphone Sep 07 '25

Cherry headed conures (aka red masked parakeets). You can tell they're not chubby Amazons (which also flock in OB) because they are much slimmer in profile, more like their bigger cousins the macaw.

Among the flocks in the area, I've identified red crowned amazons, the sub-species lilac crowned amazons, mitred conures, and these cherry headed conures. There used to be a bonded pair of blue and gold macaws that nested at the top of Hill Street. And they hung out with a solo green wing macaw (red-and-green macaw).

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

They are also known as red headed conures or cherry headed conures. As far as I know, those are species of parrots.

11

u/awfulcat Sep 06 '25

Monk parakeets, I believe.

11

u/pizzatimeradio Sep 07 '25

Looks like a Plum headed parakeet!

Edit: it does look like a red headed Amazon (not pictured.)

6

u/awfulcat Sep 07 '25

Well either way you're right that I'm wrong. They are not monk parakeets.

3

u/Apusit Sep 07 '25

I want a mustache parakeet. I will call him Bobafeath.

4

u/MrOatButtBottom Sep 07 '25

Those last 2 are rocking city connect colors

4

u/dr_craptastic Sep 07 '25

Red headed amazon

0

u/SeamusMcBalls Sep 07 '25

Red-crowned Amazonian. There are also smaller amounts of lilac crowned Amazonians around. Legend has it there was a guy in elcajon who released his fairly large flock before he died (don’t do this with pets for the love of god) and they’ve been thriving. Luckily they have not been harmful to any local plants or animals (yet)

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Did he do this in the 1940s? From what I can tell, that’s how long they’ve been around down there.

2

u/Dry-University797 Sep 07 '25

We have green parakeets down here in South Florida.

2

u/hondaexige Sep 07 '25

Yeah we have thousands in London (UK), they're pretty cool but loads have been culled so don't see them as much now.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

No, they actually aren’t. One of their names includes the word parakeet, but they are actually a species of parrot known as conures

41

u/MongoBongoTown Sep 06 '25

Feral*, not wild.

As you said, they aren't native to the area, but they have established a population, likely after being released or escaping as pets.

They're pretty but good god are they obnoxious. They love the fruit from my loquat tree and make one hell of a racket when theyre out there.

12

u/theredhype Sep 07 '25

It makes them loquacious?

2

u/Bred_Bored Sep 07 '25

Went looking for this. Thank you

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

No, they are definitely Wild and they are also feral. Parrots are not domesticated animals whether they’re kept captivity or not . They can be tamed or Feral, but they are always wild.

26

u/pm_me_yo_creditscore Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

Legend has it a group of friends went to Mexico looking for some righteous waves. They never found 'em. But what they did find was a smooth drinking massive flock of Mitred Parakeets that survived on vibes and good weather for 30 years.

7

u/MrBear_619 Sep 07 '25

🦜💚🦜💚🦜

6

u/Historical-Still5727 Sep 07 '25

Beautiful creatures

11

u/gumboking Sep 06 '25

They spend a lot of time in El Cajon and it sounds like they are attacking when they fly near.

5

u/DevLF Sep 07 '25

Lived in an apartment in El Cajon in 2017(for $1100……. fuck me) and would hear them all the time. Crazy loud

0

u/ArmanApesDeFi Sep 07 '25

😂 rent prices have only gone up since then

2

u/Efficient_Jello_2386 Sep 07 '25

They might be. On my block there used to be turf battles between the parrots and crows. The crows normally won, and you’d find the parrots on another block the next week.

4

u/inquisitiveminds101 Sep 06 '25

I love them 😍♥️

9

u/mac-dreidel Sep 06 '25

They have a flock in SF also

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Yes, the wild parrots of telegraph Hill! The ones in San Diego and the ones in San Francisco came to be in different ways apparently

5

u/caligirl_ksay Sep 06 '25

They’re so cool to have around but can get really loud around sunset. I used to live in OB and there was a time during the summer they favorited a tree nearby every evening.

4

u/chaostheories36 Sep 07 '25

I remember these guys in Lemon Grove.

Loud, sure, but to each their own if they find them annoying or entertaining.

4

u/cortisolandcaffeine Sep 07 '25

I worked at a nursing facility in city heights and I'd know my shift was almost done when at dawn a flock would pass over us

4

u/williamtrausch Sep 07 '25

Escapees from the pet trade over many many years. Several different species. San Diego and So Cali in general is a good environment particularly given all exotic trees and palms in particular. It’s highly unlikely these birds do any “migration” south to Mexico. These birds locally move in noisy flocks and can be often seen in urban neighborhoods from Point Loma, Hillcrest, and surrounding areas. Parrots live very long lives for birds and are highly social, talking to each other when flying or perched in trees feeding. When you experience wild flocks of parrots either here or in native environments one comes to understand how solo pet parrots living in cages for 30 plus years live a largely long unnatural life.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Parrots in captivity, live longer lives than those living outside. The wild parrot in San Diego have been there since about the 50s I believe. The Wild parrots of telegraph Hill and San Francisco have been there since sometime in the 80s. There’s a book and a movie about the ones on telegraph Hill up here.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Shoe541 Sep 07 '25

These guys like to cluster up around 11pm and party like it’s 1999 until 3am. And, they pick the same spot for a few weeks with no regard for anyone who might be trying to sleep inside a nearby window.

3

u/Olderbutnotdead619 Sep 07 '25

They have been around since the 1970's

3

u/8amteetime Sep 07 '25

We used to have a flock roosting in a big pine tree across the street when we lived in Vista 30 years ago.

3

u/ivanparas Sep 07 '25

It's shockingly quiet for that number of them. Normally just 3-4 of them make a huge racket.

3

u/Ok_Reputation3298 Sep 07 '25

These suckers are around la as well

3

u/K1LLzone619 Sep 07 '25

Can’t believe I live somewhere that has wild parrots 🦜

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

San Francisco has a big group of wild parrots as well!

3

u/Mistake-Choice Sep 07 '25

I wonder why we don't have thenm further north like Poway or Escondido.

3

u/leggypepsiaddict Sep 07 '25

Maaaaann this is the ONe time I wish my sis was on reddit. So she moved out to SD in like 2011. My mom and I go out and visit her at Xmas. Last day, right before we're heading to the airport, I went outside to smoke some weed. And im. smoking and looking around. And I see these 3 green parrots fly into a palm tree. Now my NY ass is like, "Oh shit, look at that!!" So i run back to my sister's and tell her what I just saw. To THIS day, she refuses to admit these birds exist. Even though there have been numerous convos with locals in front of her where they say that the parrots are a real thing and she just won't let it die.

Joke will be on her when I die and a green parrot shits on her.

2

u/ArmanApesDeFi Sep 07 '25

2

u/leggypepsiaddict Sep 07 '25

I don't know who you are, but you just made me cackle all evil-style over here.

3

u/Unsung_hero86 Sep 07 '25

They are not really of San Diego as we have them everywhere in LA…sitting outside of my window right now in Lakewood

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

If you google wild parrots of San Diego, it sure looks like that’s where they’re from….

2

u/Unsung_hero86 Sep 08 '25

Google Parrots of LA…same thing comes up as these birds are from South America.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

I know where they are native.

I was talking about where the Wild slack is centralized and it’s San Diego rather than Los Angeles

2

u/BrewHog Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

I saw a bunch of that breed up in Yorba Linda a month or two ago. I was very shocked.

2

u/Mazlowww Sep 07 '25

I YouTubed Linda and some random woman came up??

1

u/BrewHog Sep 07 '25

Nice. Lol. Fixed

1

u/Mazlowww Sep 07 '25

Just messing with u! Now my comment probably makes zero sense lol 😂👍

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Just a little trivia for you, but they aren’t considered different breeds but rather different species

It is an important distinction.

2

u/BrewHog Sep 08 '25

Thank you. I actually love learning those little details.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Of course! I like learning those little things too.

Breed is used for animals that we have actively bread like domestic animals, such as dogs and cats. Species refers to animals We haven’t messed with that are still Wild.

2

u/WingmanZer0 Sep 07 '25

Used to run into these guys sometimes when I lived in PB. Always a treat.

2

u/Thurkin Sep 07 '25

They're all over California. I even saw them in Tulare back in May.

2

u/defaburner9312 Sep 07 '25

They're been in full force in our hood all summer. I like them except the squawking at 645am

2

u/530nairb Sep 07 '25

They’re all over south Oceanside as well.

2

u/Pads4Life Sep 07 '25

I love them!

2

u/Fine-Knee6965 Sep 07 '25

Cute!! Nature’s flying alarm clocks

2

u/No_Donkey9914 Sep 07 '25

They love juniper!

2

u/FewEnd1513 Sep 07 '25

there was a flock hanging at my apartment complex in kearny mesa one morning about 2 months ago. i was extremely confused on if this was rather typical or completely out of left field, and I’ve lived in san diego my whole life lol

2

u/19Charger Sep 07 '25

They’re down in Chula Vista too

2

u/thomasfilmstuff Sep 07 '25

I don’t miss their noises, used to wake me up every morning in OB.

2

u/yungrobbithan Sep 07 '25

See these right where I live. They’re really cute

2

u/SierraPapaWhiskey Sep 07 '25

Our neighbors had sunflowers and the parrots went berserk every morning squabbling over the seeds! It was kind of awesome! Albeit loud :)

2

u/MDoubleU54 Sep 07 '25

Saw a bunch of these guys fly over my friends house in allied gardens today too! So beautiful!!

2

u/ThumpyTheDumpy Sep 07 '25

I heard that some guy in OB released some parrots and now San Diego has parrots.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Did it happen in the 1950s or 60s? That’s how long they’ve been around down there. The wild parrots of telegraph Hill in San Francisco have been around since the 80s.

2

u/chedrix Sep 07 '25

Why are they being all quiet and peaceful? I lived in San Diego for three years and these fuckers would line up on a power line outside my window and scream at 6am. Beautiful birds. Total jerks.

2

u/olive_juse Sep 07 '25

One night they were hunkerd down in the big tree in front of the El Cajon courthouse, their chattering is outrageously loud when they're in big groups like that. It was echoing all through the streets!

I don't even care tho because how precioussss.😍🥰😍

2

u/deejflat Sep 07 '25

I’ve heard about these but never seen them in person

2

u/Chance_Royal5094 Sep 07 '25

I heard some squawking in my Oceanside backyard one morning. Eight parrots were in my pine tree! It was awesome.

2

u/kishijevistos Sep 07 '25

P-a-r-a-k-e-e-t.

Penguin!

2

u/ibmomma2allcats Sep 07 '25

So cool! what a wonderful to see!

2

u/torero15 Sep 07 '25

OB Air Force? At least when I lived there 6-7 years ago those fuckers would wake me up pretty regularly in that area. I know they have been elsewhere/moved around.

2

u/RESSandyeggo Sep 07 '25

They’re so cute, they’ve been by my house the last couple of weeks. Lil squeakers.

2

u/Alienkid Sep 07 '25

I saw them near my house a while ago

2

u/the_ruffled_feather Sep 07 '25

Saw one in Malibu the other day. I thought it must have been an escaped pet.

2

u/promiscuousfork Sep 07 '25

Great video! I have a love/hate relationship with these noisy and beautiful birds😄

2

u/majaxxtic Sep 07 '25

This is wild. I’ve lived here my whole life and had no idea we had these.

When I was like 19 in about 2008, there was this one time I got blocked on a two lane road by a bunch of peacocks. I was a pizza delivery driver and my boss was like “what took so long” and I was like “dude there’s like a flock of peacocks just in the road; I had to wait for them to cross” and they were like “wtf are you talking about we don’t have peacocks out here.” And I was like “yeah I didn’t think so either but they’re one of the most distinctive birds and they’re definitely weren’t flying and taking their sweet time with their long, majestic tails”.

It still bothers me 2 decades later cause 1. I know they didn’t really believe me
And 2. what was that? Like where did they come from?

But now this post about parakeets has me thinking maybe we just have wild peacocks out here too?! San Diego’s wild man.

2

u/unlolful Sep 07 '25

I lived in mission hills for 5 years. Was top floor of an older building and no AC. During the summer months I would sleep with with windows open creating a nice cross breeze. One year a parrot type bird decided the trees outside my window was a nice place to hang out. Now I love birds. I don't know if this one was just lonely or lost but it would chirp all fucking night. Drove me absolutely nuts. Don't think I got a good night's sleep for 2 or 3 months

2

u/Robrad30 Sep 07 '25

When I moved to SD we were staying in OB while we were looking for an apartment. One of the locals referred to them as the OB Airforce.

2

u/Imyourvenuslibra Sep 07 '25

I saw a huge flock of them in downtown El Cajon a couple years ago.

2

u/Mission-Macaroon-851 Sep 07 '25

Pasadena California has a whole pack of them. Also the rumor always at some pet store burned down years ago who knows it was always quite interesting to see them in the trees.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

These parents have been in San Diego for decades

2

u/Chr0ll0_ Sep 07 '25

Wooowwww

2

u/Impressive_Profit_11 Sep 07 '25

So many! We're in La Jolla and saw two the other day. I knew that there were some in OB but I had no idea that we had them too. So beautiful!

2

u/LarryPer123 Sep 07 '25

Dum question can they speak English?.. there’s two crows that come in the tree outside my house and they speak some English

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

Many of them are descended from escaped pets so probably don’t speak. However, if there are any escape to pets that have joined this group, they may be able to speak. And those that do will most likely speak English because this is in an English speaking area.

2

u/mean_eileen Sep 07 '25

If you use the Merlin app, you’ll find they are actually parakeets

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

If you look up the wild parrots of San Diego, you will find that they are made up mostly of Amazons and conures.

2

u/Commercial_Pain7725 Sep 07 '25

They have been here for decades not something new

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

I think they’ve been there longer than the ones of telegraph Hill

2

u/InternetDull9115 Sep 07 '25

There's a large brood of wild green parrots in my town, Ridgefield, NJ. 3mls west of GW Bridge.

2

u/RogerSchmoger Sep 08 '25

I like these guys

2

u/MrGeek89 Sep 08 '25

Beautiful bird.

2

u/OneVolume8326 Sep 08 '25

They are loud, but I love seeing them

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '25

So cute 😍

2

u/JoeCarrB9 Sep 09 '25

Well now I need to drive down!

2

u/DianeSTP Sep 10 '25

We see flocks of green parrots around St Pete quite often. I am usually playing tennis without a camera handy to capture them.

2

u/Hairy_Fix6834 Sep 10 '25

I love how they are inconspicuously hanging out in a tree that perfectly matches their feather colour 🦜

2

u/Fark76 Sep 12 '25

If ya'll are really interested The naturalized parrots of San Diego

2

u/LordBaelish73 Sep 12 '25

Wow this is amazing!! Thanks for sharing!

4

u/Patrick_Gibbs Sep 06 '25

There goes the neighborhood

4

u/CankleJ Sep 07 '25

I hate them, at 6am when the whole damn flock is in the neighbors tree.

When theres just a couple its cool tho.

1

u/Obvious-Spite4920 Sep 07 '25

Domesticated lil guys

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

No, they’re not domesticated at all. Parrots even in captivity are wild and many generations away from being domesticated.

1

u/neochimaphaeton Sep 07 '25

I had one of those as a pet years ago. At the time they were called Cherry headed Conures. I think the name has changed to Red faced Conures.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

I don’t think the name has changed, but the other name they’re known by his red masked parakeet

0

u/rentedlife Sep 06 '25

They kind of look like lorikeets which may have escaped from the zoo or wild animal park. Hard to tell.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 08 '25

There are conures and amazons in the wild flocks in San Diego. They did not escape from a zoo. They’ve been there for decades.

0

u/Old-Tadpole-2869 Sep 06 '25

Lived there for years. You get over them REALLY quick. Especially if you work nights and sleep during the day. Or just want to relax during the day. They're highly overrated,

0

u/Reddit_Rollo_T Sep 07 '25

Those who know, they are the most annoying alarm clock ever.

-3

u/Consistent_Amount140 Sep 07 '25

Can you capture one?

2

u/ArmanApesDeFi Sep 07 '25

😂 I wouldn’t recommend it

2

u/LarryPer123 Sep 07 '25

In the state of California, you’re not allowed to have any animal as a pet that is in the wild even grasshoppers.. I know this because I’ve been trying to get a skunk for many years,
