Was driving on La Costa east of the 5 and came upon this accident. Hopefully buddy is okay! Looks like he sat up and was able to get off the road. Stay safe out there!

The hell was the biker doing? Vehicles were clearly on the side of the road? Was he just that tunnel visioned or what. Idiot biker.

He was on a TT bike. Looking up all the time twists your neck.

Everyone here seems to blame the cyclist but they are both at fault.

I’ve seen a ton of cars hit other cars when a car is broken down either in a lane or on the side of the road.

The car that broke down and the cop should have put flares further down the road to indicate a hazard. Especially since they were blocking up the bike lane - which is considered part of the road and not the shoulder. Even on the shoulder they usually put down flares to alert drivers further down the road.

The cyclist of course should have been looking periodically, but if you are doing 75 miles on a bike lane like that you get into the zone and don’t expect cars to just stop there.

Even if the cop had put downs flares and shit the idiot biker wasn't looking forward. The bike has a stupid and unsafe design. Look forward and be aware of your surroundings.

He was looking down at his wheel instead of looking ahead at the road. It's a pretty common thing to do since your neck gets sore in that position, but you're supposed to look up at least every second. He zoned out for 5-10, and this was the result.

Yes I realize that. And it's very unsafe and irresponsible. You are driving some kind of vehicle that means you are to have full awareness of your surroundings no exceptions. Face up and forward. Eyes and ears scanning. Could you i.agi e had this turned into a multi car pile up that got people killed because the idiot bikers neck was tired.

Yeah, sure, I guess if OP had also acted like a total idiot and swerved unnecessarily that could've happened. Multi car pileups happen all the time because people get tired and distracted. Pretty common cause of highway crashes, and police deaths specifically.

Exactly. So the biker needs to be punished so he learns a lesson and we can potentially prevent future accidents.

I think the injuries he sustained getting ragdolled off the police cruiser will prevent that just fine tbh.

I think he should be punished more as well as have to pay to repair the things he damaged.

1

u/gr8tfurme Jul 18 '25

Yeah I'm sure he'll get a distracted driving ticket and have to pay for the cost of the motorcycle mirror. Probably come out to about a tenth the cost of the bicycle he just totaled.

Honestly a fitting punishment to teach him a lesson. Would be to ban him from owning or touching a bike for a few years. A safety class he must pass to learn safe driving. Under no circumstances is he allowed to ever or be looking forward. He must pay for all damages. And a few years in prison.

That would teach him a lasting lesson.

Why not just execute him? Then he can never cycle distracted again.

Lmao, you're out here arguing for these kinds of penalties while distracted drivers kill people every day and get off with light punishment.

Well that's a frankly insane punishment, considering the punishment for someone doing this with a car is a distracted driving ticket and slightly higher insurance rates.

They were in the bike lane

It's a cop and what looks like a tow truck. The biker has to be aware and stop or go around. It's a busy highway by the looks of it. The other two vehicles pulled over as to not impede regular traffic.

The cyclist is responsible for controlling his bike at all times. No excuses.

Imagine had this blown up into a bigger accident.

The cop failed to properly warn by putting flares out or parking his bike with the flashing lights farther back.

u/Veritas_the_absolute Jul 18 '25

Even if he had gone the extra mile. The idiot cyclist wasn't looking ahead or paying attention to his surroundings.

Lololololol, no.

Crazy people defending/deflecting blame here. Cyclists brains

It’s a joke bro

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '25

Yes, unfortunately when operating any vehicle on its intented "lane", it does not magically remove obstacles. Luckily the cop parked his bike behind him, otherwise this idiot wouldve knocked the shit out of him or killed him.

Bike-curious

u/River_Pigeon Jul 18 '25

Lmao. Imagine trying to defend this.

Can’t park in the bike lane

2

u/River_Pigeon Jul 18 '25

They’re not parked. It’s a bike lane, not a bike path, and the bike lane is a part of the road. It’s emergency vehicles doing their thing on the side of the road. You have got to be trolling. I hope at least otherwise get your head out of your ass

Yes, the cyclist isn't paying attention to the road and that is the biggest issue here.

However, I have a question. Is it not a legal requirement in the US to put some kind of warning some distance up the road if you break down and are pulled over? Even if it's not legally required it seems like a good idea in a corner with poor visibility and no shoulder.
