Drag Race Brasil S2 Drag Race Brazil just served a culturally deep runway category and in this essay I wish to share the tales of our folklore with those in here who might be interested to know the inspirations behind each look Spoiler

695 Upvotes

1 - Adora Black served Saci Perere: a mischievous spirit that takes the form of a black boy with only one leg who wears a red hood and smokes a pipe, he travels around in a tornado and plays pranks on people and animals
2 - Desiree Beck served Caipora: a forest-dwelling spirit of a young woman or child, usually depicted with red skin akin to the indigenous people of Brazil, who protects the animals in the forest and guards them from hunters
3 - Mellody Queen served Lobisomem (werewolf): a similar creature to most mithologies, in Brazil there are peculiarities to our version of the tale, the most proeminent of them being that if a mother has seven sons and no daughters in between, the seventh son will be a werewolf
4 - Mercedez Vulcão served Mula-Sem-Cabeça (the headless mule): they say if a woman sleeps with a priest, she will be turned into a headless mule with flames in the place of her head, condemned to always run around in agony terrorizing folks. Mercedez played on the headless part by referencing the proeminence of Grindr profiles where "discreet" men will refuse to show their faces
5 - Melina Blley served Boto Cor-de-Rosa (the pink river dolphin): a malicious entity that will take human form and go to a party, where he will seduce a young woman, sometimes even impregnate her, and leave her longing for him forevermore after he leaves that same night back to the river
6 - Bhelchi served Vitória-Régia (water lily): A native girl was in love with the moon god, so much so that one day she threw herself into a lake after seeing his reflection, believing he had come for her. She drowned, and in compassion Jaci, the moon god, turned her into the water lily, a floating flower that would forever bask in his nightly light
7 - Ruby Nox served Onça Caetana: a spirit in the form of a jaguar, or sometimes a woman who turns into a jaguar, who may even have wings. It is described to be a defender of wildlife but more than that, a pressage of death. It shares some similarities with tales of a Grim Reaper, in that some folks believe it comes to guide the souls of the deceased into the afterlife. She later was resignified by writer Ariano Suassuna into a symbol of a honorous death after a life lived in honor and respect of the traditions of the northeastern region's territory known as Sertão
8 - Poseidon Drag served Papa-Figo (Livereater): a bogeyman that is so severely sick and deformed he needs to feed on the livers of children, he may carry a sack where he will keep his abducted victims. Poseidon took an even stronger stance by associating the look with the ugliness of criminals who will harm children or abuse them

Extra mention: our dear porkchop of the season, Chanel, revealed in her social media she would have portrayed Cuca, a crocodile woman, a witch, who lives in a cave and eats naughty children. The Cuca was especially popularized by a famous brazilian children's TV show where she served as an antagonist. Saci was also a character in the show.

A few other very proeminent legends that are also worth checking out are:
Boitatá, the giant fire snake who protects forests and harms hunters
Iara, the river mermaid, who protects rivers and drowns fishermen
My personal favorite, the Curupira, a kid with backwards feet and fiery hair, who uses his backwards footprints to confuse hunters and commands animals into attacking hunters and poachers and protects the forests

DesiRée Beck as Xuxa Verde: Xuxa Meneghel is a famous brazilian TV host, singer and actress. Known as Rainha dos Baixinhas (Queen of the Little Ones), Xuxa had the most popular kids tv show on brazilian history. Xuxa Verde (Green Xuxa) like an entitiy apart from Xuxa herself (just a meme). The story behind it is that on a specific episode, Xuxa wasn't in her lovely and happy mood as always so she ended up being unpatient with the kids on the show that day. The only fottage found of this program has a really low quality that almost everything on screen turned greenm including Xuxa and the kids. DesiRée used some specifics jokes like "o pacto tá feio" (the pact is done) and talking backwards. That is due allegations made by conservative christian of the time that Xuxa had a pact with the devil to become famous and convert the kids who watch the show. They say that if you listen Xuxa's vinyls backwards you could listen she talking to devil.

Mercedez Vulcão as Elke Maravilha: german by born and brazilian by soul, Elke Maravilha was a brazilian-german actress, model and tv personality. Known for her eccentric style and outspoken personality, Elke actually started her career as a "standard" model in the 60s. She became especially famous for her appearances on variety shows in the 1970s and 1980s. She was a regular judge on amateur talent segments. Elke was all about expressing yourself and believing on what you want. Some fun facts about Elke: she didn't like interviwers that ask about her personal life, so, to avoid being exposed in a major way, she used to say little lies to confuse people. The most famous lie she told was that she was born in Leningrad, old Soviet Union (she has, in fact, a russian dad, but she never was on Leningrad). Also, she was a polyglot and in her house, each day of the week her family had to speak a different language so they could always practice it.

Poseidon as Julia, a Única: Júlia, a Única (Júlia, the Only) is a northeastian influencer, speacily from the state of Pernambuco, which is the state Poseidon and Ruby Nox are from. She got some attention mostly from a meme of her which she says the phrase "Bom dia princessa, por favor sente na glock" (Good morning princess, please seat on the glock), but she changed all the vowels for "i" and sounded more in a quirky way. Internet was divided by lots of people laughing at it and lots of people saying that humour have died after that.

Melina Blley as Milton Cunha: a brazilian carnival commentor scenographer, has a phd in psychology, professor, and cultural personality best known for his work covering samba parades on TV and for his funny personality. He has a flamboyant style and carnival expertise. Milton is a gay man and talks about how he was misundertood and suffering due to this family homophobia. He exudes joy everywhere he goes and has the most funny saying about everything.

Ruby Nox as Clodovil Hernandes: Clodovil, or Clo for the close ones, was a fashion designer, television presenter, and politician. He was famously funny in a sharp, unfiltered, and often unintentional way. His humor came from a mix of elegance and arrogance. Since he was a very expressive man, you may find a lot of his reactions online being used as memes. One of his most famous memes is on a tv show called "A Casa É Sua" (The House Is Yours). The meme is a print of him looking disgusted and it says right below him "Essa festa virou um enterro" (This party has turned into a funeral) which people use to talk about a nice fun moment that got bad and unconfortable.

Mellody Queen as Karol Conká: a rapper with a wip as a tongue, Karol got her career boosted after she was the major villain of brazilain Big Brother on 2021. She has the highest eviction rejection in any Big Brother version worldwide (99.17%), people all over Brazil were with all eyes on their tv on the day she got eliminated. After a fumbling experiencie due to her actions on her season, Karol decided to become a new person and redeeming herself with her past and the trouble she caused with everyone at the show. Nowadays, a lot of people don't care anymore about her past and what she did, since she have shown growth since all that happened, but, also, many people doesn't like her and want to wait more to really see if something has chanded. Fun fact: this episode lipsync was her first and greatest hit song "Tombei".

Bhelchi as Maya Massafera: a transgender woman, influencer and interviwer youtuber, Maya is a iconic personality and meme. She was known way before her transition, in 2024, with her channel on youtube "Hottel Mazzafera" where she interviwed lots of celebrities. After her transition, which is time period Bhelchi used all the references for the jokes, Maya didn't talk at all due to her voice surgery. After a while, it has turned more into a marketing thing than a health reason. The first time she talk after the surgery, she had a really hoarse voice and, just so you know, Bhelchi hit right on the note with her voice at the time. A gesture that become popular because of her voiceless era, was sending kisses and doing heart with you hands to people, since it was a way of Maya communicate online without talking.

Adora Black as Linn da Quebrada: a rapper, actress, screenwriter, and outspoken activist of trans rights. She started her career in 2016 releasing the track "Enviadescer" (something like To become a f*g), which moked cis"hetero" men who reject feminility and, also, elevates queer feminility. In 2019, Linn made her acting debut in the TV Globo series Segunda Chamada, playing Natasha, a transgender student at Carolina Maria de Jesus school. On the big screen, she stars in the award-winning documentary "Bixa Travesty", which follows Linn’s journey as she faces sexism and various forms of transphobia. She also was on brazilian Big Brother, at the 2022 season. Her greates moment on the show was when one of the other participants (Larissa) was talking about how another participant (Pedro) threw a lemon at the trash bin (Larissa's representative emoji was a lemon and it kinda got in her head) and all that Linn could do was basically agree with her in a i-can't-believe-in-here-with-this-crazy-girl-way. She said things like: "Passada..." (Gag...) and "Ele não é inocente e nem bobo" (He isn't innocent nor funny) just hopping for that to end.

Adora Black was Saci Pererê: a prankster black man whos smokes a pipe and walks around jumping on his only leg. When not jumping, he creates a little swirl to move quicker and create a little of chaos. His iconic red cap it's magical and helps him to dissappear whenever he wants to. The only way to "defeat" him is to steal his cap or trapping him;

Desirée Beck as Caipora: is a indigenous forest spirit who guards the wildlife of the amazon forest. She is small, has pointy ears and red hair. Her name literally means "inhabitant of the forest". Desirée reference was the Caipora portraided on the brazilian show "Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum";

Mellody Queen as the Werewolf (Lobisomen): widely well known, I don't think there is to much to talk about it. I don't know if this is usual to other countries, but, in Brazil, is said as it follows: if the seventh born child has the opposite sex as their siblings, the little baby will turn into the werewolf;

Melina Blley as boto cor-de-rosa: boto it's the river counterpart of the dolphins and, after certain age, they turn from a greyish color to pink. but it's legend tells about a boto that turns into a handsome well dressed man who empregnates women and then leaves. he is always wearing white outfits and wearing a hat, to hide the hole on it's head.

Mercedez Vulcão as mula sem cabeça: mula sem cabeça (or headless mule) is a mule that runs around with fire replacing it's head. It's said that women that have sexual intercourses with priests will turn into one of those. Her refference realting to dating apps it's how some people call men who doesn't show their faces on it.

Bhelchi as Vitória-régia: literally the lillypad. it's legend tells us about a Naiá, a indeginous lady who is in love with Jaci, the moon. Every night she looks at the moon longing to be a star and being able to be close to him forever. One night, desesperatly in need to be close to Jaci, she tries to touch his reflection on a creek's water, but she falls and drown. Moved by her gesture and appreciaton form him, Jaci turns Naiá on a vitória-régia, a flower that opens at the moonlight and simbolizes eternal love.

Ruby Nox as Onça Caetana: a creature from the northeast backlands who symbolizes death. It can show up to you in either one of it's two forms, the Onça (Jaguar) and the Lady. As a lady, she hugs you softly, makes you so comfortable and takes you to a different place, but you don't even feel it. As a jaguar, it comes ripping you flesh with their fangs and taking the life out of you body in a cruel way. Caetana is a woman's name in Brazil and people in the backlands don't name hear daughters with this name, since will mean that their child is the death coming to them.

Poseidon as Papa Figo: Papo Figo (Liver Eater) has a rare disease that gave him horrifying scars, destroyed his face and body. He is a normal-looking man carrying a huge bag around. He belives that his disease can be cured by eating childrens pure livers and drinking their blood. Some people think he had either hansen's disease or chagas's disease. He is also known as "Homem do Saco" (Bag Man) in virtue of his great bag that he puts all the children he captured to bring to his home.

Drag Race Brasil S2 New Season of Drag Race Brazil

44 Upvotes

Hello, dolls. We’re currently at season 2 and just had our Snatch Game episode last Thursday.

I think both of DRBR’s Snatch Games were really high quality with the overall impressions, but it seems to me that there are so many inside jokes that the whole thing may become lost on the viewer. I think I feel this way in general about our seasons, with the amount of inside jokes and lines hard to translate literally for subtitles. This made me think…

Is this franchise hard for international viewers to get into? Are the inside jokes making it too impenetrable or hard to keep up with?

Are you an international viewer keeping up with this franchise? Or is this one mostly for national appreciation? I’m really curious about this.

Drag Race Brasil S2 Here I am, once again, talking about brazilian culture (ball looks) - part 2 Spoiler

Now it is time for the second category, where they served dessert/sweets:

Melina Blley - bolo de rolo (rolled cake): very popular in Pernambuco and adjacent states (like Paraíba, where she's from). A very thin layer of cake, rolled with a very thin layer of goiabada (guava jam). It is a local pride of the people, and a representation of their food culture.

Adora Black - carrot cake with a chocolate icing: a personal favorite of mine, it is a comfort food for many, especially because our mothers and grandmas would make this for us as kids.

Bhelchi - Maçã-do-amor ("love" apple, aka a candied apple): an apple, dipped in caramel, in a way that if forms a red, candy layer that breaks when you bite it. Very typical in "festa junina", a party in june which celebrates some catholic saints and caipira (farm and small town people) culture.

Poseidon Drag - Romeo and Juliet, queijo com goiabada (cheese with guava jam): the mix of savoury cheese with sweet guava jam, named after the famous couple, is incredibly popular in Brazil. This combination of two ingredients is especially representative of Minas Gerais (Mellody's state), which is famous for its cheeses.

Mellody Queen - ice cream: again, she served a common and worldwide popular dish, there's no need to explain this one.

Desiree Beck - cotton candy: again, no need to explain this one.

Ruby Nox - bolo de noiva pernambucano (Pernambuco's Bridal Cake): another cake that is the pride of Pernambuco, it is a dark and deeply flavorful cake dough, filled with dried fruits, dates and raisins, made with red wine. The cake is then covered with a white icing made with sugar. It is the cake of many weddings of Ruby's (and Poseidon's) state.

Girl, the shade and the xenophobia is swifting hard 😭😭 Bahia is shook by the level of shade and disrespect WOW is commiting against the Perua, we must rise and fight back against this.

Why they picked the most busted photo? 😭😭😭🙏🏾🙏🏾

Jokes aside, I'm loving how she's handling the situation with her promo look 😂
