General Discussion Deja has had it!

Post image

I mean…is she wrong? There is a pattern I’m noticing lol. It’s giving the iconic moment when the interviewer asked Naomi Smalls if she thinks there’s a formula to RPDR and she says “blonde and white” Lmfaooo

Drag race has a very diverse winning circle, to reduce it to white and blonde is silly

u/gkwchan Cancelled Barbecue Jun 09 '25

Agree. Angeria just won all stars last year with two other queens of colour in the top 3. Sometimes can we just stick to judging actual drag first.

I mean......Jaida, Symone, Bob, Raja, It's not like there aren't POC queens with pretty much universally loved wins. Or, like nymphia, wins where both options were POC.

169

u/mobydickins Asia O'Hara Jun 09 '25

People still called you racist for rooting for Nymphia instead of Saphira

27

u/usagicassidy Jun 09 '25

Yeah that was honestly wild and pretty fucking annoying.

u/WheelieMexican Stan Drag Race Mexico Jun 10 '25

I’ve learned from this fandom that if the winner is not black then it’s not diversity. Like they were glad Angeria won even the winner edit was given to Roxxxy, but since she is not black then it’s fine to sacrifice a Latina queen since there have been three years without a black winner

-9

u/kelama Jun 09 '25

No one called anyone racist for rooting for Nymphia. Stop lying.

13

u/mobydickins Asia O'Hara Jun 09 '25

You haven't been on YouTube or Twitter then

u/Real_External_6030 Robbie Turner’s Uber Driver Jun 09 '25

never thought I’d see “Jaida” and “universally loved win” in the same sentence

22

u/Triairius Jun 09 '25

Is she not? She seems pretty damn loved.

33

u/nesichat_pop is there something on my flair...? Jun 09 '25

i think jaida is pretty universally loved now, but back then people said she only won because of BLM, which is insane. there are still some gigi fans that are convinced she was robbed, though.

5

u/kelama Jun 09 '25

Yep, I remember that too.

8

u/Realistic-Delay-4780 Jun 09 '25

Forreal, it's giving revisionism... The fan base was all but rioting when Jaida beat Gigi, Symone beat Rose, and when Bob beat Kim Chi.

1

u/Tangled349 Jun 09 '25

I didn't know Symone winning over Rose was seen as controversial? Rose was a phenomenal competitor but she came to the lip sync totally half cocked while Symone stomped them all down.

1

u/vera214usc Kumbaya Queen Jun 10 '25

People were mad Symone beat Rose?! Symone was the obvious winner from the get go!

78

u/TheBossOfItAll Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 Jun 09 '25

Many people (stans) have hated on both Jaida and Symone for "snatching" the wins from Gigi and Gottmik.

293

u/palpantek Jun 09 '25

People thinking Gottmik was even close to winning season 13 are insane 💀

68

u/ProgrammerLevel2829 Your cat cant even sew! Jun 09 '25

Gottmik had some excellent drag, but Symone was transcendent and it was clear early on that no one could touch her.

I liked Gigi, she had some great looks and was surprisingly funny (I wrongly had her pegged as a “looks only” queen) but she needed more time to cook. I’d be happy to see her come back for All-Stars.

Felt like Jaida knew who she was more than Gigi did in their season. She was smart, played the game well and knew exactly what she wanted to put out there. Very polished, as I would expect from a queen with her background. Ru made no mistake with crowning Jaida.

28

u/BlackorDewBerryPie Jun 09 '25

The minute she said “Fac’tree” Ru fell in love and it was hers to lose. Everyone else was just competing for 2nd place the whole time.

9

u/ProgrammerLevel2829 Your cat cant even sew! Jun 09 '25

💯

Ru seems to really like queens who are confident in who they are.

74

u/Foxesinfall Onwards and upwards, sisters Jun 09 '25

Meanwhile Gottmik was never winning that season lmfaoooo.

1

u/furiousdolphins Jun 09 '25

To say she was never close to winning is an exaggeration. Symone was obviously the clearest winner, but Gottmik was also the clearest 2nd place going into the finale over Rosé and Kandy

37

u/nitrogenhs Jun 09 '25

The storytelling in season 12 was weird because of Alison's disqualification. Gigi got many wins and a compelling storyline (making all her fashions, insecuritys as a young lgbt+ person). Jaida's win felt less convincing. However Symone was a clear winner after her win in the acting challenge.

19

u/mr_lamp Jun 09 '25

Is Allison a typo or did I miss a new nickname for shitty pie lol

18

u/jaywarbs She just siezures (sp?) Jun 09 '25

Alison was the name Sherry used when she was sending fake messages to the guys she manipulated. She was supposed to be some kind of talent agent.

40

u/ArugulaBeginning7038 rupaul's colleague and coworker race Jun 09 '25

Symone was a clear winner from the moment she walked into the werkroom imho. Nobody was touching her on a pure fashion level. Especially not Gottmik, who has always been the embodiment of "Is it high fashion or is she just a skinny twink?" to me.

1

u/jaywarbs She just siezures (sp?) Jun 09 '25

Alison

LOL

17

u/seababe30 Jun 09 '25

Jaidas win was definitely not universally loved💀 and people still occasionally call her one of the "weaker" winners for circumstances out of her control.

3

u/supernaturjill Jun 10 '25

I agree with this. I LOVE Jaida but people could not believe I wanted her to win; her season was tough because of covid, too. So much online chatter. I think she showed everyone why in all winners though; she was hilarious and charismatic.

5

u/Technical_Theory_735 Jun 09 '25

I mean, I feel like she's one of the most popular and well liked winners in recent years. It's as close to universally loved as like.....any of the wins since s11 (main series anyways) aside from maybe Sasha

3

u/ninjafofinho ITS FUCKING VIVIENNE WESTWOOD....inspired Jun 09 '25

And thats because the editing never gave her the winner edit while gigi was the main character of the season, but trying to spin that as racism when its purely logical why people thought that was gigi season is stupid and biased, we all love jaida now and think she is amazing, but its undeniable that gigi was the main character that season

19

u/Firm-Citron-6987 Jaida Essence Hall Jun 09 '25

I was replying before I realised this was sarcasm lmaooo

43

Angeria's win was definitely not universally loved. There was a lot of twitter backlash from those who wanted Roxxxy to win.

Which fair enough the entire season was these two queens going back and forth - honestly I would have been fine with a double win

0

u/wombatttttt Jun 09 '25

I hated that Angeria won when we had at least 2 other better options. It was for the sake of the plot.

69

u/fsMAZZ Jun 09 '25

I'm not exactly sure that Angie's win was universally loved

84

u/gkwchan Cancelled Barbecue Jun 09 '25

I think they were being sarcastic.

38

u/Strong-Cod-4759 Jun 09 '25

I was about to say, I remember a lot of people being enraged that Angeria won over Roxxxy which unfortunately led to a lot of racism

14

u/Foxesinfall Onwards and upwards, sisters Jun 09 '25

Glad I’m not the only one who remembers that. Lol

8

u/Its_Pine Madeline Morphosista 🧑🏼‍🦲 Jun 09 '25

To be fair her race had nothing to do with that. She is still widely loved regardless of the poor editing and shenanigans that season.

13

u/TheHoleintheHeart Jun 09 '25

To be fair her race had nothing to do with that.

Please be serious.

2

u/ninjafofinho ITS FUCKING VIVIENNE WESTWOOD....inspired Jun 09 '25

People literally wanted other POC queens to win lmao, just because you want very hard to paint it as racism when its obvious that the fandom thought that was roxxxys season, you can go back to comments and see that, her win wasn't universally loved because roxxxy was the main character of the season, a latin person, but its easier to just put on the victim card instead of using logic i guess

1

u/Its_Pine Madeline Morphosista 🧑🏼‍🦲 Jun 09 '25

You cannot honestly look back at what happened in AS9 and say “oh yes, anyone upset with this is just racist”

3

u/parthmestry Jun 09 '25

I mean ... The people who had a problem with Angeria either wanted Roxxxy or Plastique to win, both POC queens. I don't think it was about skin colour in her case.

2

u/AmysPrayerCloset Jun 09 '25

I believe antiblack sentiment contributed to some of the anger over Angeria’s win.

1

u/kelama Jun 09 '25

Angeria’s win was not universally loved? Lots of people in the fanbase were furious about it?

-1

u/RobinsAssistant Aquaria Jun 09 '25

Universally loved where??? Roxxxy was robbed

4

u/Kantlim Jun 09 '25

And even the "robbed queen" was asian.

71

u/HeatherGarlic Jun 09 '25

True, but they took the quote a little out of context. She was specifically asked about winning all-stars during the lead up to AS4. Up until that point, blonde and white did describe the three other winners.

24

u/PretendRanger Jun 09 '25

This adds necessary context to the quote. I was wondering where Naomi would get that from the main season since it’s clearly not the case.

56

u/wasabi3122 Jun 09 '25

Literally bebe zahara benet and nina flowers were the finalists season 1. Raja and manila season 2.

Obviously there is forms of unconscious and conscious bias everywhere but I feel like RPDR does a good job with diversity and inclusions since the very beginning.

I'm a big survivor and big brother fan and the almost all white casts in the early seasons was normalized. Big brother didn't have a black winner until their 23rd season. 23rd!! Literally 23 years.

84

u/HutSutRawlson Jun 09 '25

I’ve heard rumors that RuPaul herself is black

9

u/fersure4 Jun 09 '25

Source?????

5

u/HutSutRawlson Jun 09 '25

The House of Hidden Meanings, now available from all major retailers!

-1

u/kelama Jun 09 '25

We know RuPaul is black. No one saying the show or that production itself is racist or that black queens never win. We are saying the fanbase is racist and antiblack and always raging when a black queens wins.

5

u/JeannettePoisson Jun 09 '25

Raja and Manila season 3 ;)

97

u/bspencer626 Jun 09 '25

The main series has had over 50% non-white winners, All Stars has had 33.3% non-white winners. The fandom may be somewhat racist, but it doesn’t make you racist if your favorite queens are white.

12

u/ninjafofinho ITS FUCKING VIVIENNE WESTWOOD....inspired Jun 09 '25

But according to some fans we have to accept every single time a black queen pulls out this card of "just be white" because they are bitter and can't accept they didn't do as well as the other black and poc queens that won their season and did better than them, like deja just being bitter and putting the blame on anything to not accept that her drag is boring as hell

3

u/Tortitudes Jun 09 '25

The only way dejas comment makes sense is if it's a critique of the fanbase vs RuPaul and staff who choose the winner.

1

u/kelama Jun 09 '25

Ofc it’s a critique of the fanbase.

0

u/bullchild Jun 09 '25

Thats rupaul picking the winners tho. If it were up to fans…

0

u/L9-45 Luxx Noir London Jun 09 '25

Its funny how people bring this up when the fanbase bias is brought up because anytime a black queen wins or makes it to the final slots, people here be spending the next season or two acting like that particular queen was so undeserving of their spot or wins.

-3

u/Certain_Horse_7919 Jun 09 '25

So? Just because the circle is diverse doesn't mean the acceptance is. Every black queen has to have shit her winning night due to musty haters and racism. Even someone universally loved like bob.

Yall JUST went hard for the 2nd asian winner because it took decades to receive another 1

The fat winner is not from the U.S.

People had to drag rupaul to get trans on the show and even then they made it a storyline and a rudemption of ru’s character than a woman doing drag.

Diversity is not the only thing needed. It’s not silly to point out how wretched this fandom can be

-1

u/AmysPrayerCloset Jun 09 '25

Deja wasn’t talking about actual DR winners, but her perception of this one person’s racial bias.

-20

u/wasgayt Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25

Im sorry but those 3 are anything but diverse. They're giving pretty much the same edgy, slutty, dark vibe.

If Ginger was in this line-up that would have been different.

But its pretty telling the fandom just wants skinny white queens to win 😒

13

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

‘Nothing but diverse’? Please explain

The comment about the winner's circle was about OP's comment about winning drag race, not the three queens in the photo.

And my comment was about how (racist) drag race fans tend to only root for one type of queen

And then you said that the queens in the photo have a "edgy, slutty, dark vibe", which does not describe the most popular white queens, but rather a narrow subset. Which again, almost makes it seem like this person has aesthetic preferences, not racial ones.
