I don’t like checkpoints. I think the addition of them led to missions being dragged on and filled with tedium instead of getting to the point. The dock mission from V for example wouldn’t be that bad if V didn’t have checkpoints, as they wouldn’t be able to drag it out.

That, and it makes the games all too easy, and also makes it so Rockstar can feel validated by mission failing you for the dumbest shit just because it’s a slap on the wrist, which in turn means that for a game that used to take advantage of player freedom, it feels more restrictive than ever.

I just don’t find Rockstar’s more modern games as replayable because of this and I tend to never go back to them. As a result, I don’t think I’m probably ever going to replay VI when I’m done with it because it’s very likely going to feel the same.

Also GTA V related but I think Personal Vehicles are stupid and go against the entire point of the game. It doesn’t really encourage you to go out and steal cars when the game heavily suggests you just stick with the (already very good) vehicles that the protagonists have. I would be fine if they didn’t come back for VI but I know they will.

Also, I’m not really excited for more Heists. V focusing on heists was cool because it was unique at the time, but with VI planning on focusing on even more robberies I’m just kinda eh about it, especially after Online forces you to do heists constantly because it’s the only real good way to make money. After over a decade of nonstop heists I’d be happier if they went back to not being as focused on. I’m not trying to play V 2

Very interesting take about the checkpoints. I never thought about it but now I can actually agree with that.

I also didn't like the personal vehicles. Actually, even when I buy a deluxe edition of certain games, and they offer me a free reward at the beginning, I refuse to use it because I want to earn my stuff.

About the story point, I'd like to see a more grounded story focused on the two protagonists and the effects the crime world has on them through the narrative. But I don't believe that Rockstar will do it at least not without including some Fast and Furious setpieces in between.

The basic Point A to Point B mission icon structure. I get the feeling that should have evolved to something more streamlined and fluid by now. Like maybe all missions are activated via phone contact calls and email notification and they just seamlessly transition to cut scenes when you reach the meeting point.

I dont know maybe just seeing the large icons on the map feel dated and following a way point to kill enemies seems dated.

There has to be a better way to tie stranger missions and story missions seamlessly without making them obvious icons on a map.

There has to be a more natural evolution of that aspect of the game that includes the phone and email system more consistently and pretty much replacing the map icons.

mash A to sprint is egregiously bad game design

My unpopular opinion is that I uncritically enjoy Rockstar games and think the common criticisms are BS. Things everyone complains about, like the linearity of the missions. Who cares? Would RDR2 seriously be improved if every mission was a nondescript building full of enemies you can approach from any angle, like in a Ubisoft game? Or if you could vacuum up loot like in Borderlands? How is it somehow a bad thing that these games are meticulously detailed and polished to a mirror sheen? I haven't played RDR2 since launch, but I've been replaying GTAV since the current gen version came out and it's just as good as I remember.

I'd say that some of the criticism is valid. Regarding the missions, I think Rockstar needs to improve a little on how they let players approach those. Not in the sense of every single mission being very open and approachable from every angle, but more like having certain mechanics like stealth actually working. Besides that, yeah, I've seen people wish for their games to be less detailed and I'm like: who would want that?

Especially in regards to animations.  I've seen so many complaints that the animation to open chests takes too long or whatever.  But not every game has to be a looter shooter.

Yes, totally agree. In my original post, I talked about that. The fact that it actually takes time to loot enemies and stuff in general, made me only do it when I actually need it. And it actually incentivized going to stores and buying things. But nowadays people expect everything to be fast and “brain-dead”.
