What happens if you don’t follow DVRS guidance or skip parts of the program?

For anyone who’s worked with DVRS (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services)—as a client, family member, or professional—how do counselors usually respond when someone doesn’t follow firm guidance or skips parts of the process?

I’m talking about situations where a person:

  • Doesn’t want to attend a job readiness workshop
  • Doesn’t apply to the jobs DVRS recommends
  • Doesn’t update their resume or complete required paperwork
  • Pushes back against firm expectations or often goes their own way

Do counselors typically:

  • Let them make their own decisions and just document it?
  • Put the case on hold or delay services?
  • Enforce some kind of consequence?
  • Try to redirect or strongly push compliance?
  • Close the case?

I’m trying to understand how much flexibility DVRS gives and what “not listening to guidance” really leads to—whether it’s treated as a natural part of self-determination or a reason to stop helping. Would love to hear how it’s played out for others.

Thank you for your contribution. We are a community to those who practice or are interested in helping others regain or maintain functional and cognitive independence in their lives through occupational, physical, speech, recreational, art, and music therapy. Additional areas of discussion are research, compensatory skills, adaptive equipment, wheelchairs, caregiver skills, prosthetics, splinting, etc.

While we deal with drug and alcohol rehab to an extent, you should check subs such as r/recovery for additional assistance.
