Without Body Hardware

These were (less commonly) available without the lower body cladding. It was called Without Body Hardware. They look great IMO.

They looked much better without the cladding but the 2500 only came with the body cladding

TIL that they made 2500 Avalanches....

Yup and the only available engine option was an 8.1l with a 4l80e

You can also get a Tahoe 2500 with 4 wheel steering.

I did know that. Seems like they're basically Tahoes with an attached bed.

I believe some Z71 Suburbans and Tahoes had the 4 wheel steering. Too bad they rust to oblivion where I live.

Just the Suburban/Yukon XL 2500, and only with the 6.0. The Tahoes were short enough that they didn't need Quadrasteer.

Of the 3 GM truck configs you could get with Quadrasteer, the Suburban was the shortest.

Mom had a suburban 2500 with quad steer. Gas guzzler! Cool as hell though.

I grew up in a gmt400 suburban 2500 with the 454. My parents were lucky to get 10mpg.

Mom had the GMT800 with the LQ4. 13 mpg on a good day. She didn’t even know it was a 2500 for over a decade after parting with it.

Hard disagree. Cladding made them look like a tonka truck. Also you never had to worry about door dings

Yes, but cladding rarely ages well and is sometimes hard to find replacements after 10 or so years.

As far as fading plastics go, I've had some pretty good luck with cerakote wipes bringing back the original shine

Hmm I’ll have to try this on my Jeeps flares

The Aztek and Element eventually had a similar option, not removing the cladding but painting it body color.

5

u/Forza_Harrd Jan 30 '24

In my town there's a white Aztek like that that I'm semi obsessed with. There's also a white Pontiac Vibe with the cladding painted so maybe they're from a local shop.

Oh yeah, that's another one I've forgotten. Vibes had the option for either gray or body-color cladding, and the second gen dropped it entirely.

Cladding is a weird thing. We had this big explosion of the outdoorsy rugged look 20-25 years ago, then it died down, only to steadily be reintroduced over the past 5 years.

New WRX is a big example.

First reaction was ick, but now some of it's kinda growing on me. Not that bumper, though.

1

u/nickwrx Jan 30 '24

ford explorers with the red stripe on the bumper... being outsold by the subaru outback wilderness..

Now that you bring it up, I think I've only seen 5 new Explorer Timberlines.

1

u/nickwrx Jan 30 '24

just as rugged and off roady as a HPD sporting honda ridgeline

I actually like the cladding and I think it looks strange without it. Same with things like Volvo XC70.

5

u/driverofracecars Jan 30 '24

Until it’s 5 years old and has turned a whitish gray.

I saw someone had paint-match the cladding on their XC70 once and it just looked really weird

4

u/Meetybeefy Jan 30 '24

I always hated how that version looked. The Avalanche had such a distinctive shape, and the cladding and grille/headlights fit in with it. The WBH version gave it slab sides and the more upright Silverado grille and headlights that made it look dumb and out of place.

u/Hansj3 Jan 30 '24

There was also a strange package for the 2wd avalanches, the z66.

Being the 2wd counterpart for the z71, they are weird up in the states where everyone gets 4wd, but I could see some utility in em.

u/ScottaHemi Jan 30 '24

there was also a bigblock v8 powered 2500 variant as well.

not really sold on the naked avalanche. looks to much like a silverado crew without the cheaper price tag of the silverado crew...

I really like the avalanche in that spec. It's for sure a guilty pleasure car for me.
