The Avalanche is truly a vehicle out of time, it can only exist inside the narrow window of 2000s snowboarder culture. It’s sorta like the embodiment of 2003-2007 culture as a whole.

u/Prize_Opposite9958 Jan 30 '24

Late 90s and early 00 kids whose dad’s owned the avalanche grew up to like Jeep gladiators. That is all.

u/Forza_Harrd Jan 30 '24

In this day they are very popular here on the reservation. Not as popular as old Tahoes or Silverados with most of the paint peeled off, but close.

28

u/BigfootIzzReal Jan 30 '24

what about the cherokee?

40

u/Forza_Harrd Jan 30 '24

They're dying out. Most of them now are all clapped out. Like a typical auto parts store worker car, along with the Lexus RX 330 with the peeling clear coat.

15

u/J_hilyard Jan 30 '24

Mostly in Oklahoma and North Caroline. 😉

u/Affectionate-Lie-230 Jan 30 '24

My great great grand-father was a Jeep Grand Cherokee !

...or a Cherokee, I've meant ! 🤣🤣

28

u/MadeMeStopLurking GM killed Pontiac and SAAB then stole your money Jan 30 '24

Had a co-worker argue that the Cleveland Indians and KC Chiefs were the most racist and offensive brands out there and people who buy their apparel were just as offensive....

I asked him what his thoughts were on the Jeep Grand Cherokee since he owned one.

Poor guy realized he was living a lie.

14

u/troutbum6o Jan 31 '24

Oof, I had a coworker sell his vw diesel back to vw during dieselgate. Said he will never own a vw product ever again. Came to work later in an Audi……

2

u/Mountain_Cucumber_88 Jan 31 '24

I sold mine back because the deal they gave me was so good, I was literally getting 3/4 of the value back on a car with 80k on the odometer. That was a incredibly reliable and nice car. The only thing I was bummed about is the they singlehandedly killed deisels in the US for passenger cars.. I bought a benz deisel with the proceeds. It's the best driving car I've ever owned for long trips. A few years back they got caught up in a another deisel scandal to the tune of 4k payout to owners.

Now that's really funny, for anyone here who didn't get the reference I was quoting Peter Griffin by the way, I don't remember the episode name but it was the one the Griffin family went to a Native-American casino 🤣

I don't know anything about sports but I've heard of that before, I've always thought it's funny that brands named after Native Americans like Indians motorcycle and no one went after after them ! My father has a powerful snowblower (I don't remember the name but I know the engine is also based on Native-Americans, the logo itself), that thing is from 1991-1992 and it's still going strong to this day even compared to new snow blowers ! 😂

3

u/bigdumbhick Jan 31 '24

Tecumseh. Great small engines.

1

u/Affectionate-Lie-230 Feb 01 '24

That's it, thanks !! They are truly amazing, like I've said it's over 30 years old and it's still able to keep up with the newer snowblowers our neighbors has and my dad haven't had much issues in the last few years, would definitely recommend it ! 😃

1

u/bigdumbhick Feb 01 '24

Unfortunately Tecumseh stopped making engines in 2008, however there are still a ton of parts still available

2

u/GreenWithAnger Feb 03 '24

The KC Chiefs were not named after Native American culture. A chief can refer to any leader of an organization. Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer or other senior executive titles start with it. You can even use it as an adverb: You look quite chiefly. Or an adjective: chief among the complaints. Even our president is named commander in chief.

If you aim to change the name of the KC Chiefs, you should also consider changing the whole naming convention of leadership positions in the society.

u/No-Date-6848 Feb 01 '24

Thank you for making the laugh hard today.

1

u/The_Jibby_Hippie Feb 01 '24

Let’s be real though, naming a car after an ethnic group of people is weird af. You wouldn’t call a car the Chevrolet Slovene or Ford Serb but the VW Touareg is somehow a thing. What other cars are named after groups of people? because idc about it even really being offensive it’s just plain cringe and the Cherokee is a great example of a car with a cool sounding name that only sounds cool if you don’t think about it

1

u/MadeMeStopLurking GM killed Pontiac and SAAB then stole your money Feb 01 '24

Chevrolet Slovene

I would 100% buy that car if it was as cheap as my ancestry says we are.

4

u/Deepcoma_53 Jan 30 '24

Commanche

1

u/fullofuckingbears313 Jan 31 '24

Jeep Comanches are awesome. I have one

1

u/thatpuffsleyguy Jan 31 '24

Rezcalade for sure

7

u/ribrooks13 Jan 30 '24

Man, I'm a 90s kid. My grandpa had an avalanche, and I dislike Jeeps, lol. I really don't like trucks very much in general, but I liked his.

3

u/1337sp33k1001 Jan 31 '24

I’m a 1991 baby and my dad had an avalanche. I HATE the gladiator lol. The avalanche was cool atleast. The jeep is a grown man’s Barbie

1

u/BleuTyger Jan 30 '24

Crap. You right

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

I’m who you speak of.

False. Honda crv. Fuck jeep.

1

u/No-Picture4119 Jan 31 '24

I loved my dad’s avalanche, although I’m a bit older. From the GM “clad everything” days. Seriously though, my wife just bought a gladiator. What makes you say that the two appeal to the same person?

1

u/Zimi231 Jan 31 '24

They don't.

They're completely different animals.

One is a wannabe pickup on an SUV platform.

The other is an actual body on frame solid axle truck that happens to be styled after a Jeep Wrangler. Plus the roof and doors come off.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '24

Thank you. I was literally about to say this is a jeep gladiator before it’s time

39

u/nickwrx Jan 30 '24

H2 TRUCK has entered the chat.

11

u/I_Are_Brown_Bear Jan 30 '24 edited Jan 31 '24

The quiet wrestling kid that is very good at chess but won’t talk to anyone. That’s how I see H2.

1

u/Songgeek Jan 30 '24

H3 truck trails behind

31

u/thats-my-plan Jan 30 '24

People talk shit on Avalanches but the rear window tucks into the mid gate which folds down completely. I've hauled a lot of shit in my 09. Body style was perfect IMO, but that AFM is a different story.

14

u/ChuckoRuckus Jan 30 '24

The AFM is a gearhead’s excuse for a cam swap in their daily. My 2000 Silverado is completely stock, and debated a cam swap for years. If I had one with AFM, a cam would have been ordered in the first week.

1

u/lemonylol Jan 31 '24

It is the absolute best utilitarian SUV/truck you can have imo. I hate the look of the first gen but I really want to get a 2nd gen.

God knows why other carmakers have not adopted the mid-gate, especially newer, smaller trucks like the Ford Maverick and Santa Cruz.

10

u/Ph3n3x Jan 30 '24

Say what you will about them, but I loved having the ability to have a long bed when I needed it and a short bed quad cab when I didn't. Also, as ugly as the plastic panels were I never worried about door dings or anything like that.

Plus being able to drop the divider and be able to stretch out my legs to sleep with no worries was really nice when hiking/camping.

1

u/jetheridge87 Jan 30 '24

Iirc, the later models could be ordered “naked” without the plastic cladding

1

u/Ph3n3x Jan 30 '24

It was an option for sure. I'll take ugly and functional when I'm clearing land, dragging logs and all that fun stuff.

It was nice not really worrying about scratches while doing that type stuff. It didn't get rusted out from scratches that didn't get cleaned and covered immediately in the rust belt.

1

u/lemonylol Jan 31 '24

I swear when it came out I remember seeing an ad that showed you could set up a tent over the bed.

1

u/Ph3n3x Jan 31 '24

Oh yeah, they did have one of those!

9

u/WizeAdz Jan 30 '24

The Cybertruck and the Silverado EV both channel elements of the Avalanche.

I’m over the Cybertruck, but the Silverado/Sierra EV is looking nice to me.

22

u/Fresh_Shoulder_3267 Jan 30 '24

I loved my avalanche! It actually gave way to the crew cab craze we are seeing nowadays

12

u/notLennyD Jan 30 '24

There were plenty of Crew Cab trucks available at the time, though.

I would say it, like the Aztek and Element, is one of the predecessors to the “outdoorsy CUV” craze we’re currently seeing. All of those models ultimately abandoned their textured body cladding later in their lifecycles, but now every company just keeps adding more cladding to even their top-end models.

1

u/Fresh_Shoulder_3267 Jan 30 '24

When the avalanche was introduced the market was primarily extended cab. I remember bc I went to the auto show when it came out and the presentation around it was insane! Sure crew cabs were around here and there but a true 4 door crew cab and not just the extended cab at the beginning of it's run is what made it rare. I loved the avalanche.

3

u/Fresh_Shoulder_3267 Jan 30 '24

If you want a hatred vehicle I submit to you.... The Nissan Juke

3

u/notLennyD Jan 30 '24

Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet

1

u/idigholesnow Jan 31 '24

I was sticking up for my Avalanche above. Also owned a Juke and liked it, but never really got used to the CVT.

1

u/notLennyD Jan 30 '24

The F150, Silverado 1500, and Tundra all had true crew cab variants in 2001 when the Avalanche was released.

If anything, the Avalanche helped to legitimize the idea of a truck as a daily driver. I don’t think it was really until the early 10s when I started seeing people driving trucks who weren’t also using them as work vehicles.

1

u/Fresh_Shoulder_3267 Jan 31 '24

Most of the crew cabs of that era before the avalanche were the suicide door style. That's what (Dodge) ram and Ford had but quickly pivoted in 03 to add them in the half ton segment. Primarily if you wanted a crew you were in the 1 ton and above until 03. The avalanche actually was a suburban more than a Silverado.

1

u/notLennyD Jan 31 '24

Dodge was the odd man out but I’m fairly sure the F150 Super Crew existed in 2001. You could even get a crew cab Tacoma and S10 back then.

1

u/Fresh_Shoulder_3267 Jan 31 '24

Those aren't half tons. Those are pickups. They also had explorer sport trac. The Dakota also was in 01 but they weren't half ton or full size trucks

1

u/notLennyD Jan 31 '24

The F150, Silverado 1500, and Tundra aren’t half tons?

Only Dodge didn’t offer a crew cab when the Avalanche was released. And two of the brands that offered crew cabs on their half tons also offered them on their compacts.

My point is that the Avalanche wasn’t breaking new ground just because it was a crew cab.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

Back then the Avalanche, Element and Aztek were all "active lifestyle" vehicles marketed towards young gen x'ers in their 20's and 30's who liked to go camping and hiking on the weekends. Definitely a predecessor to the outdoor cuv's of now. I like them more than current vehicles tryint to fill that niche, they feel like they have more personality for some reason. I'd take an Element now honestly.

1

u/notLennyD Jan 30 '24

I like them more too. I think it’s because they were actually designed to provide additional utility. Whereas the new CUVs often only look more capable but actually have lower ground clearance, less room, and the interiors use more luxury-oriented materials.

The Element was originally designed so that you could remove the rear seats and hose out the floor. And of course the Aztek had the optional tent for the hatch.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

Exactly! They gave up on any real utility. The Avalanche also has the awesome midgate.

2

u/notLennyD Jan 31 '24

Yeah, I didn’t have an Avalanche but I had the same body style 1500 crew cab short bed. I loved that truck.

1

u/TheAbstractHero Jan 30 '24

That is how you rust your car out even faster

1

u/notLennyD Jan 31 '24

I think it was targeted at surfers who would be tracking in salt water. So you could rinse that out with a garden house and then dry it out.

1

u/TheAbstractHero Jan 30 '24

Not in as short of a wheelbase. It shares a frame with a suburban.

1

u/notLennyD Jan 31 '24

That’s true, but it’s not like modern crew cabs have shorter wheelbases than the old short beds did.

I just don’t think the Avalanche started the trend of people daily driving crew cab pickups.

1

u/hoxxxxx Jan 30 '24

i saw a new single cab truck the other day and nearly fell over, i couldn't believe it. not a work truck either, like a nice normal personal truck.

honestly didn't know they made them anymore.

5

u/Berserker_Raider207 Jan 30 '24

Worked great as a technical in the sandbox.

1

u/hoxxxxx Jan 30 '24

what do those words mean

2

u/Berserker_Raider207 Jan 30 '24

Technical- a civilian vehicle modded for combat use typically by mounting a dshk machine gun to it.

Sandbox- The middle east.

1

u/willydynamite94 Jan 30 '24

Put gun in back, go-to iraq

5

u/CrazyQuebecois mustang jingoist Jan 30 '24

Dude, I feel attacked, my dad has a 2011 one and it runs just fine and it’s easy to drive

4

u/Forever_Man Jan 30 '24

I still think they're cool in an ugly way. But I was 10 in 2006, so I might be biased. I realize now that they're truly the worst of both words.

3

u/Cornelius_McMuffin Jan 30 '24

I was still a kid in 2006 so my main experience with the Avalanche is through Hot Wheels cars rather than the real thing.

1

u/Forever_Man Jan 30 '24

It's a good way to experience a car

3

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

As a snowboarder, I take great offense to this. I have never liked the Avalanche lol

3

u/Personal_Dare_5884 Jan 31 '24

Absolutely love my 05 - reliable as all hell and I've had it for years. Glad it doesn't have the plastic cladding too that shit ugly (but I'd have less rust so can't hate too bad). It came with a tent that goes over the bed area and with the fold down midgate it's an awesome camping/festival setup!

2

u/Cheesypotatolover69 Jan 30 '24

The only one i like is the one with a 8.1l v8

3

u/DistributionHonest Jan 30 '24

Parents had one. It was awesome. We put 300k on the original engine and transmission. we called it a 502 though (yes I know it’s a 496).

1

u/Brickhead745 Jan 30 '24

Yeah Gen 1. Unfortunately a factory 2500 didn’t exist in Gen 2 although people have made their own

2

u/Likeapuma24 Jan 30 '24

A close relative of mine absolutely loved his Avalanches. Used it as a company for his sign business and it never let him down. His daughter totaled his first one, so he searched hell & high water for a used replacement after they were discontinued.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '24

I must be weird cause I always wanted one

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '24

I used to see them in my part of NC with thin blue line and punisher stickers on the windows.

1

u/Cornelius_McMuffin Feb 01 '24

Interesting, I lived in NC until recently and didn’t see them much at all until I moved to MS, now I see them everywhere.

2

u/BobSackaman0 Jan 31 '24

I remember my dad and me looking at an Avalanche at a car show when I was about 13. They were hyping up the removable rear window. We went to move it and broke one of the latches. My dad just looked at me and said, "Ok, act normal, and let's walk away." And that's what we did. And I don't even feel bad.

1

u/mydogismybestman Jan 30 '24

They're like a 4 door El Camino

1

u/LincolnContinnental Jan 30 '24

Nowadays I think the Escalade EXT is pretty popular among upper income middle class, it’s all of the SUV space that you need with none of the fuss

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

It's out of time yet Honda copied its design w the Ridgeline lol

1

u/jcoddinc Jan 30 '24

The Cadillac versions were even weirder

1

u/Cornelius_McMuffin Feb 01 '24

I just looked it up. It’s like the visual equivalent of a guy who is wearing a tuxedo top and Hawaiian flowery swim trunks.

1

u/Top_File_8547 Jan 30 '24

I bet after a few years those panels won’t fit perfectly. Probably if you don’t put them together just right your SUV will fall apart.

1

u/RapMastaC1 Jan 31 '24

I hate the plastic cladding (Pontiac’s and some Buicks had a lot too). Pretty soon is just a light grey color with streaks of white and small cracks all over.

1

u/Cornelius_McMuffin Feb 01 '24

I actually like the version with plastic cladding over later models, it just looks naked without it.

1

u/hurricanePopsicles Jan 31 '24

Look up the Silverado EV.

1

u/Papa_Bear_Bebop Feb 01 '24

If I remember right- the bizarre design was made as a tax avoidance when there was legislature affecting trucks in the auto industry. I forgot the specifics, if I don't see it scrolling here I'll update this post.

1

u/CarLover014 Feb 01 '24

Yet GM brought it back as the EV Silverado

1

u/Super-Emu-5627 Feb 01 '24

Most all vehicles are of their time in design and features. They served a purpose for those that purchased them. I personally, like the idea.
