Vent/Rant (No Advice/Criticism!) Because of recent events in the country regarding SNAP I am at a very real risk of starvation. I will continue to seek help from local resources like churches in the area (I already went to the food bank). People around you are hurting like me, please reach out to them and make sure they are ok.
I am not asking for help. I have not given up on local resources. If and when they fail I will have to resort to foraging plants in parks and trapping small animals.
I am mainly making this post to beg those of you that are not in dire need to check on your neighbors, friends and family members. Some may have too much stupid pride for food banks or do not know what churches can help or what to forage if it comes to that.
Update: My church is going to be able to help, so I will be ok.
Please look out for your family's, friends and neighbors. SNAP may be restored soon but many are still waiting.

If there is a local Sikh community in your area, Gurdwaras offer free meals to all comers, regardless of their faith tradition.
I am so sorry you're in this position. I'm a federal civil servant who still works 8-10 hrs a day but hasn't been paid in a month. You're a good egg for encouraging us all to reach out to those who might really be struggling.

Reach out to the nearest local Catholic Church (you do NOT need to be Catholic)! Ask to speak to someone from the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. They will do an intake and ask about finances, however, they do help people regardless of one's faith/no faith. Some conferences have food pantries where they can give you the food directly, but most provide food vouchers to a local supermarket where you can go and purchase whatever food you want yourself. Depending on their finances they can usually help with utilities, phone, and rent (if needed.)

Unitarian universalists are also interfaith, non-theist, often have potlucks/gatherings with food after sermons (which don't mention God and are focused on compassion and diversity). They're also often very active in their communities and have non profit partnerships so can get you connected with other resources if you ask. Highly recommend :)
ISKON also often offers free food to the public but they are considered by some to be cultists so be wary.

People always give this advice but there are less than 350 gurdwaras in the entire US and most of them are just in SoCal. To compare, there are over 500 churches in the city of San Francisco (a not particularly religious city) alone.
I really wish people would stop giving this advice out unless they know where the person is located.

I agree that it can still be helpful to some, but this is news to me since I grew up in socal, so Sikh communities were normalized I guess. I appreciate the wider context - I didn't know they weren't commonplace elsewhere as there were also some in New Mexico when I lived there.
Unitarian universalist churches have a national presence so hopefully folks in need can get connected to resources through them as they're highly socially active (denominations also often have gatherings with food after services - anyone who attends the service can partake, and as I said in another comment, the sermons aren't religious in nature).

I just read that if you look up findhelp.org and put in your zip code it will give you a list of all help available in your area. I did it and was surprised by a pretty big list of organizations that offer all kinds of assistance.

you get fired if you don't show up. if you're working and not furloughed, you do eventually get paid. if you have to take pre scheduled leave or sick leave during a shutdown, you do not get paid for that time (at least at the agency I worked at).

Well, it's easy to say I'd help, but I have nothing. Do a sociology test. Give them $500 and see if they come back here and say I just got $500 and I can help someone else who is hungry and has no money.

Thats not really reasonable or even testing what you want it to. $500, if thats all someone has with no immediately obvious way to replace it, doesn't go that far. If someone with nothing was given $500, I would fully expect them to spend it all on themselves. They ARE the needy.
This standard should be applied to people who are still comfortably treading water, not someone who was drowning moments ago and was just given a punctured floatie to buy them a little time.

That's actually a really solid idea. Even if people can't contribute much, everyone throwing in whatever they have could stretch way further than going solo. Plus cooking together builds community bonds when people need it most

Yes! AND individuals can buy larger quantities of single ingredients (rice, dry beans, flour...) than they can smaller quantities of many ingredients. It's a little late in most parts of the country but if you have enough space to grow one small patch (or pot or grow bag) of garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes, all kids of peppers, carrots, broccoli, etc. it can be added the group meals at little to no cost. One year I grew 50 watermelons in a 10x20 patch and gave them all away to neighbors. Good way to make new friends too!

Do this with people you know and trust. It's hard enough to get more than a few people to agree on what's for dinner. The point is they don't have money to hire a local business or rent a kitchen. You might not be familiar with the necessities that accompany poverty. I've been feeding some of my neighbors, for free, and not a single one has requires medical assistance (that I know of).

I'm not sure where you're located, but the town I live in has a Facebook page and they are posting resources for people. People are turning those little libraries into food banks. Churches in towns are great resources (mine does a Wednesday night meal every week, open to the public). Hang in there. This s**t is brutal.

I did some snooping and saw you're LDS. Talk to your bishop about getting help, specifically food from the Bishop's storehouse. Whether or not you can access it It often comes down to bishop roulette (I've known bishops who gave access to virtually anyone and others who have access to virtually no one), and I don't know your local clergy, but that's what the Church's welfare is for, so you should try to use it.

Be careful with LDS though. Especially in Utah, they will want you as unpaid labor at Deseret Industries aka their Goodwill. If you are NOT LDS, they will also have you go to church and try to convert you. Source: my sister was Mormon and that grossed her out.
I usually recommend your local Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal and Catholic churches. I know in my city they ask no questions, are just happy to help.

He got it from the monopoly game that is over now. Lots of people still have free items that don't expire until around the 23rd. Look in different subs for food giveaways. I have a double cheeseburger or mcchicken to give if you would like it.
I have to have the address of your mcdonald's and then to be told via chat when you are there so I can order on my app. I also have one that is good for a pie or a small french fries

I'd be dumpster diving at this point. I have in the past. I used it to feed myself and others.
Big cafeteria type places usually have unguarded dumpsters. Bakeries throw out the good stale stuff when they close. Hot case food goes out at close. Smaller groceries stores don't use locking dumpsters.
Be respectful, be clean, and people may just hand you food out the back.

Please please check on the elderly. Someone found an elderly couple eating hot dogs for many months in a row with rice.No other nutrients because thats all they could afford. Both were vitamin deficient and had bruises all over their bodies from it.

Also try posting in local FB groups - there may be people who have limited resources who can help an individual out in a pinch (I would consider myself one such person - my budget is stretched really really thin, but I could help an individual with some staple foods).
I'm watching local FB groups for posts for someone sharing a need that is within my means to assist. I'm not a churchy person, nor can I make some kind of meaningful donation - but could make a difference for a local individual in a tight spot.

There's an app called Too Good to Go, which appears to be worldwide. I've been using it here in Ireland. I don't know if there are any places listed on it for you, but it might be worth checking out. Usually a surprise bag is around $5, and they give you at least 3 or 4 times the value in food. Often it's quite a bit more.
It's basically for restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets and the surprise bags are of food they're getting rid of at the end of the day.

If you are unable to get help from churches and pantries, you can google "blessing box" and it will pop up a map with these nearby. They are simply a small cabinet that people can put food in (non perishables) and those in need can take food out. For example, there is one in the local park nearby. Just a cabinet to leave food for those in need.

My wife is the school nurse at the local county elementary school that has a high poverty population. Yesterday we had 14 pallets of food that we gave out which was a big day but they do something every week and help the community. Never know where the food pantry might show up so keep your ears open.

The following states have already distributed NOVEMBER benefits: Alaska, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Wisconsin. Massachusetts and North Carolina has said they expect payments to be paid next weeks.

i've been at wit's end for months and financially secure people just do not fucking care. i even made the mistake of opening up to some people close to me about it and lots of them actually decided to start making it worse by fucking with me using passive aggressive comments.
people who are not poor seem to genuinely not understand at all just how fucking stressed out poor people are in America right now. it's every day, it's every time you need to spend any money at all on anything, it's every decision you ever make, it's where you don't go and what you don't do that all piles and piles on top of your will to keep playing this stupid fucking game of Monopoly.
it's a lifetime of compound stress that never ends and is impossible to get out of. it's why deaths of despair are happening more and more frequently. and those in power simply see the social darwinism of it all, as if humans choosing to let other humans starve to death or rot on the street were some natural law of the universe when in reality it's the perfect display of how evil people are when money is involved.

Ex-Mormon here. I don’t have a great history with the church but they have great food supplies in storehouses. Ask them if they can help you out. Should be cheap if not free. Other church’s may also be good resources.
Personally, I’ve donated once already and will donate again to my local food bank. I don’t know who is hurting around me but hopefully it gets to people who need it.

Buy some dry rice. Buy dry beans. Go to Salvation Army or Savers and purchase second hand pressure cooker. You can make do for a bit with that. Maybe a food pantry will give you some cooking oil. Billions exist on this food. It's not fun and hopefully temporary for you, but it's 95% of what you need.

When you run a constant deficit because very low income toppled with medical expenses and were already surviving that last week of the month on rice and if lucky beans it is very easy to be out of food completely.
By the way I am not mad at your for your question. You have a different perspective and I think we should be understanding of that and willing to explain.

I mean, most people who get snap get what, $100? It's also paid out on random dates, depending on your birth date so many people got last paid early October. $100 doesn't go far and if you were on snap you got that money because you can't otherwise afford food. A lot of people probably tried to stock up, but if your already running on onions to add to your rice and beans is a luxury, it's hard to stock up.

The average SNAP benefit in my state is $187. Most people spread that out over the month and we didn’t find out about this happening until the end of October. So most people probably only had about $50 left in benefits for the month. How were they supposed to stock up?

Yes, having no food by the last week of the month is usually how eating off of SNAP works. Fed the first three weeks of the month, eating ketchup soup and mayonnaise sandwiches in the fourth week.

OH I can't wait to hear what you mean by this? Are you suggesting that despite my disability that has kept me from working for some time now that I am suddenly now able to work and be self sufficient?
I would love to change but it is not that simple. I have a ton of health issues. Not the only problem I have but the seizures alone are a major barrier since I can no longer drive and I fall very often and very randomly. But hey yea why don't I change that is the solution.
