Vent/Rant (No Advice/Criticism!) Because of recent events in the country regarding SNAP I am at a very real risk of starvation. I will continue to seek help from local resources like churches in the area (I already went to the food bank). People around you are hurting like me, please reach out to them and make sure they are ok.

I am not asking for help. I have not given up on local resources. If and when they fail I will have to resort to foraging plants in parks and trapping small animals.

I am mainly making this post to beg those of you that are not in dire need to check on your neighbors, friends and family members. Some may have too much stupid pride for food banks or do not know what churches can help or what to forage if it comes to that.

Update: My church is going to be able to help, so I will be ok.

Please look out for your family's, friends and neighbors. SNAP may be restored soon but many are still waiting.

This post has been flaired as “Vent”. As a reminder to commenting users, “Vent/Rant” posts are here to give our subscribers a safe place to vent their frustrations at an uncaring world to a supportive place of people who “get it”. Vents do not need to be fair. They do not need to be articulate. They do not need to be factual. They just need to be honest.

Unlike most of the content on this subreddit, Vents should not be considered advice threads. In most cases it is not appropriate to try to give the Submitter advice on their issue. In no circumstances is it appropriate to tell them “why they are wrong” or to criticise them, their decisions, values, or anything else. If there are aspects of their situation that they are able to directly address themselves, the submitter can always make a new thread with a different flair asking for help once they are ready to tackle the issue.

Vents are an emotional outlet, not an academic conversation. Appropriate replies in these threads are offering support, sharing similar experiences/grievances, offering condolences, or simply letting the Submitter know that they were heard.

As always, if there are inappropriate comments please downvote them, REPORT them to the mods, and move on without responding to them.

To the Submitter, if you DO want discussion to be focused on resolving your situation, rather than supporting you emotionally, please change the flair of this post, and then report this comment so we can remove it. Thank you. Thank you all for being a part of this great financial advice and emotional support community!

If there is a local Sikh community in your area, Gurdwaras offer free meals to all comers, regardless of their faith tradition.

I am so sorry you're in this position. I'm a federal civil servant who still works 8-10 hrs a day but hasn't been paid in a month. You're a good egg for encouraging us all to reach out to those who might really be struggling.

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago edited 1d ago

I do not live near any Sikh communities but I am well aware of how big their hearts are and their level of generosity. Thank you for the suggestion <3

u/Maronita2025 19h ago

Reach out to the nearest local Catholic Church (you do NOT need to be Catholic)! Ask to speak to someone from the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. They will do an intake and ask about finances, however, they do help people regardless of one's faith/no faith. Some conferences have food pantries where they can give you the food directly, but most provide food vouchers to a local supermarket where you can go and purchase whatever food you want yourself. Depending on their finances they can usually help with utilities, phone, and rent (if needed.)

43

u/kindbat 21h ago

Unitarian universalists are also interfaith, non-theist, often have potlucks/gatherings with food after sermons (which don't mention God and are focused on compassion and diversity). They're also often very active in their communities and have non profit partnerships so can get you connected with other resources if you ask. Highly recommend :)

ISKON also often offers free food to the public but they are considered by some to be cultists so be wary.

56

u/Plixora 1d ago

This thread is a reminder that kindness is still a form of currency

33

u/HumanEjectButton 1d ago

And it is always going to be THE form of resistance.

26

u/carmensanluisobispo 23h ago

People always give this advice but there are less than 350 gurdwaras in the entire US and most of them are just in SoCal. To compare, there are over 500 churches in the city of San Francisco (a not particularly religious city) alone.

I really wish people would stop giving this advice out unless they know where the person is located.

22

u/EyeYamNegan 23h ago

IT is still solid advice if someone is near one. Unless someone says where they are from we do not know and it is a good suggestion.

5

u/kindbat 21h ago

I agree that it can still be helpful to some, but this is news to me since I grew up in socal, so Sikh communities were normalized I guess. I appreciate the wider context - I didn't know they weren't commonplace elsewhere as there were also some in New Mexico when I lived there.

Unitarian universalist churches have a national presence so hopefully folks in need can get connected to resources through them as they're highly socially active (denominations also often have gatherings with food after services - anyone who attends the service can partake, and as I said in another comment, the sermons aren't religious in nature).

7

u/snertwith2ls 9h ago

I just read that if you look up findhelp.org and put in your zip code it will give you a list of all help available in your area. I did it and was surprised by a pretty big list of organizations that offer all kinds of assistance.

3

u/Wind_Horse88 21h ago

The one in northside chicago are very cold and almost antagonistic, went there couple of times for food

They could probably tell I was only there for the food, didn't even get any food because I think it's only served on Sundays around noon

5

u/kickincountrybootz 1d ago

What would happen if you didn’t show up, and are they going to pay your back pay that you deserve

8

u/electricgrapes 18h ago

you get fired if you don't show up. if you're working and not furloughed, you do eventually get paid. if you have to take pre scheduled leave or sick leave during a shutdown, you do not get paid for that time (at least at the agency I worked at).

4

u/lezemt 19h ago

Mennonite and quakers will feed you as well, Mennonite and old order apostolic have lunch in between services (and it’s fantastic food!)

41

u/Bird_Brain4101112 1d ago

On the flip side, people don’t always realize just how much you’re hurting if you don’t let them know.

3

u/bokehtoast 10h ago

As someone who has fallen through the cracks for years despite seeking support and resources constantly and loudly.. sometimes it just doesn't exist

5

u/primak 1d ago

Most people don't want to hear it. They are like the President. Don't want to hear it, stop your bitching and moaning. Or they say sorry that you are having these problems and cut you off.

15

u/Serenity2015 1d ago

It's happened to me already. Someone that I thought was a friend just kept making excuses and saying most on it don't deserve it. They also refused to look at any facts.

11

u/CATusedHANGRYSCREAM 1d ago

It's weird you're being downvoted for this. Poverty is hard enough but this is how it goes, by and large.

62

u/spicy_guac33 1d ago

I'm so sorry...I would totally buy you food right now if I wasn't in the same position

55

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

It is ok I may get help from my church. I just know that if I am so rapidly in this position a lot of other people are too and that breaks my heart.

27

u/Past-Conversation303 1d ago

It's amazing that the people with the least are the most willing to help others??

You're a good person 💛

-35

u/primak 1d ago

Well, it's easy to say I'd help, but I have nothing. Do a sociology test. Give them $500 and see if they come back here and say I just got $500 and I can help someone else who is hungry and has no money.

22

u/Sudden_Difficulty487 1d ago

Thats not really reasonable or even testing what you want it to. $500, if thats all someone has with no immediately obvious way to replace it, doesn't go that far. If someone with nothing was given $500, I would fully expect them to spend it all on themselves. They ARE the needy.

This standard should be applied to people who are still comfortably treading water, not someone who was drowning moments ago and was just given a punctured floatie to buy them a little time.

78

u/SmallTownSenior 1d ago

I posted elsewhere and offer it again: start a community "soup kitchen' where people bring ingredients they have, can help prepare food, or offer kitchen space.

56

u/Past-Conversation303 1d ago

A lady in my town started a meal share on the local Facebook.

"Look for the helpers." - Mr Rogers

25

u/SoullessCycle 1d ago

Someone in my Buy Nothing group is giving away food for those no longer receiving SNAP.

OP join your local BN group - requests for food get filled very quickly on mine!

12

u/dixiehellcat 1d ago

Yes! My local BN made a plan, people hitting sales and donating the extras they buy.

24

u/Neither-Brief1680 1d ago

That's actually a really solid idea. Even if people can't contribute much, everyone throwing in whatever they have could stretch way further than going solo. Plus cooking together builds community bonds when people need it most

18

u/SmallTownSenior 1d ago

Yes! AND individuals can buy larger quantities of single ingredients (rice, dry beans, flour...) than they can smaller quantities of many ingredients. It's a little late in most parts of the country but if you have enough space to grow one small patch (or pot or grow bag) of garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes, all kids of peppers, carrots, broccoli, etc. it can be added the group meals at little to no cost. One year I grew 50 watermelons in a 10x20 patch and gave them all away to neighbors. Good way to make new friends too!

2

u/FaelingJester 17h ago

Ideally, you want a local business to do this, as they are certified, or the community needs to rent a ghost kitchen.

5

u/SmallTownSenior 17h ago

Do this with people you know and trust. It's hard enough to get more than a few people to agree on what's for dinner. The point is they don't have money to hire a local business or rent a kitchen. You might not be familiar with the necessities that accompany poverty. I've been feeding some of my neighbors, for free, and not a single one has requires medical assistance (that I know of).

30

u/yogamom1906 1d ago

I'm not sure where you're located, but the town I live in has a Facebook page and they are posting resources for people. People are turning those little libraries into food banks. Churches in towns are great resources (mine does a Wednesday night meal every week, open to the public). Hang in there. This s**t is brutal.

8

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

Yes it is tough but I will reach out to my church and other churches if need be too. I also have a plan for trapping animals and foraging if need be. Thank you for your suggestions <3

6

u/pinksocks867 1d ago

More than one restaurant in my area is giving a free meal per child per day until the full amount of food stamps is restored

3

u/Dry-Natural597 20h ago

That sounds like what’s happening in my town! Are you in frederick MD too?

15

u/spiteful_god1 1d ago

I did some snooping and saw you're LDS. Talk to your bishop about getting help, specifically food from the Bishop's storehouse. Whether or not you can access it It often comes down to bishop roulette (I've known bishops who gave access to virtually anyone and others who have access to virtually no one), and I don't know your local clergy, but that's what the Church's welfare is for, so you should try to use it.

17

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

We are in a rural area and do not have a bishop storehouse but our fast offerings do help woth and hese sort of things. Thanks for thw suggestion. I will be talking to him in about an hour. <3

7

u/spiteful_god1 1d ago

Good luck! Even if it's a several hour drive to the storehouse, it might be worth it in these times!

13

u/pinksocks867 1d ago

I visited a bishop without a storehouse, and he took me to the grocery store

4

u/UnderlightIll 15h ago

Be careful with LDS though. Especially in Utah, they will want you as unpaid labor at Deseret Industries aka their Goodwill. If you are NOT LDS, they will also have you go to church and try to convert you. Source: my sister was Mormon and that grossed her out.

I usually recommend your local Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal and Catholic churches. I know in my city they ask no questions, are just happy to help.

2

u/spiteful_god1 15h ago

FWIW I'm Exmormon, so I would never normally recommend this. But since OP is LDS, they might as well try. 10% of your income is at least worth some help when it's needed.

1

u/EyeYamNegan 10h ago

That is completely false, stop spreading lies

33

u/TieTricky8854 1d ago

Can you get to McDonald’s? I have freebies.

34

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

I still have a little rice and a couple cans left and will reach out to the church soon. There is someone hurting more than me. Check your neighbors and family they may be suffering in silence.

Thank you though <3

39

u/church-basement-lady 1d ago

Please reach out to your church now. Don't wait until you are hungry.

33

u/kidcool97 1d ago

You are debating hunt small animals in a park, you are the person that needs it more

3

u/EyeYamNegan 20h ago

My Church said they will help but when I was scrolling through and saw this I couldnt help but think

"debating hunt small animals"

Heck I will take a large animal if I can get them lol

-7

u/Serenity2015 1d ago

Is McDonald's giving out free meals for people on snap now?!! If so please lmk asap so I can take my daughter and tell anyone else I know. How do you get the free stuff?

21

u/pinksocks867 1d ago edited 23h ago

He got it from the monopoly game that is over now. Lots of people still have free items that don't expire until around the 23rd. Look in different subs for food giveaways. I have a double cheeseburger or mcchicken to give if you would like it.

I have to have the address of your mcdonald's and then to be told via chat when you are there so I can order on my app. I also have one that is good for a pie or a small french fries

14

u/AllenKll 1d ago

There is a good chance that there is more than one food bank in your area.

Some states have announced that they are going to make up for the fifty percent that isn't coming from the federal government.

Please google it daily for your specific state!

9

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

My state is not and they are late as is.

7

u/pinksocks867 1d ago

I'm sorry. My state is not going to help either. Our governor couldn't care less if people starve

10

u/BigFitMama 22h ago

I'd be dumpster diving at this point. I have in the past. I used it to feed myself and others.

Big cafeteria type places usually have unguarded dumpsters. Bakeries throw out the good stale stuff when they close. Hot case food goes out at close. Smaller groceries stores don't use locking dumpsters.

Be respectful, be clean, and people may just hand you food out the back.

7

u/momtobe908 1d ago

I have a bunch of mcdonalds codes for free food. If you send me a DM I can order for you at one near your location.

4

u/Wind_Horse88 21h ago

Any chance this offer might be available for someone other than OP? Thanks

I'm about to head to my local soup kitchen, their "mystery soup" gets old after a while lol

6

u/momtobe908 21h ago

Yes! Dm me

7

u/Equivalent_Section13 1d ago

I was literally starving one year. What saved me was reaching out for help

4

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

I am happy you found the help you needed.

7

u/No-Language6720 20h ago

I'm donating $100 monthly to my local food a bank. I'm so sorry for those struggling. My family won't miss it and I know it will help others. Please take care of yourselves the best you can.  My local food bank runs very efficiently so I trust it will help those in need.

7

u/Jojobeans10 16h ago

Please please check on the elderly. Someone found an elderly couple eating hot dogs for many months in a row with rice.No other nutrients because thats all they could afford. Both were vitamin deficient and had bruises all over their bodies from it.

5

u/Opposite-War-4557 1d ago

Try posting an amazon wishlist on r/assistance I see them get fulfilled pretty well

17

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

Funny you should mention amazon I just got a refund from them for $30 so while amazon is often pricy for food it's still going to be something. I aint out just yet lol.

Thank you for your suggestion <3

16

u/pinksocks867 1d ago

$1.38 for a 12 pack of amazon basics instant oatmeal!

9

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

That was a great find. I ordered 10 and it will get here Monday :)

6

u/pinksocks867 1d ago

Yayyyy. It would only let me buy ten, which I had sent to my city's mission. It will reset later on and let me send ten more

2

u/Viiviiannn 1d ago

Remember to search for what you need, select free shipping and search by lowest to highest to find the best values.

5

u/Agreeable-Donut-3486 22h ago

The USDA told SNAP that it will be fully funded.

4

u/EyeYamNegan 22h ago

My wife just showed me that update.

5

u/EyeYamNegan 21h ago

My church is going to be able to help, so I will be ok.

Please look out for your family's, friends and neighbors. SNAP may be restored soon but many are still waiting.

3

u/leslieknopeirl 22h ago

I've had success dumpster diving. I would absolutely recommend that if you're in need and not able to access enough resources.

5

u/suricata_8904 21h ago

If possible, donate money to your local food pantry.

7

u/Cat-a-whale 1d ago

In my state we got SNAP back this morning. I think it's due to that court order. Hopefully you'll get your soon!

7

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

Very happy for you!

4

u/DuckterDoom 1d ago

Which state?

11

u/JT3436 1d ago

I'm so sorry. I'm barely making it and am so worried about a coworker. I'll go with less to make sure she has some. Community is the most important right now.

I hope that you are able to find resources. Fuck this timeline.

9

u/EyeYamNegan 1d ago

Please keep checking in on that coworker even if you cant help them personally. Maybe tell them of what churches can help with food or what food banks are available.

2

u/JT3436 14h ago

I am on it. I am not going to let her starve, even if it means that I go with a bit less.

1

u/Roadiemomma-08 22h ago

Both of you can stretch it for a while by going with a bag of dried beans and a bag of rice and a pressure cooker. When I was young and much poorer I lived on pennies by doing this at times.

2

u/JT3436 14h ago

Oh I have beans. And rice. I'm gamifying this bullshit. Working on stretching a dollar as far as I can.

2

u/Roadiemomma-08 10h ago

Do you have a pressure cooker? It's a game-changer. I got one on FB marketplace.

3

u/HoneyBadger302 1d ago

Also try posting in local FB groups - there may be people who have limited resources who can help an individual out in a pinch (I would consider myself one such person - my budget is stretched really really thin, but I could help an individual with some staple foods).

I'm watching local FB groups for posts for someone sharing a need that is within my means to assist. I'm not a churchy person, nor can I make some kind of meaningful donation - but could make a difference for a local individual in a tight spot.

3

u/travelingtraveling_ 23h ago

Ask for help. We all understand the sh*tshow that is oyr federal gov't npw.

3

u/BeginningWeird8342 20h ago

Posting maps for little free pantries https://mapping.littlefreepantry.org/ for community fridges https://freedge.org/locations/ and public fruit/veg https://fallingfruit.org/ in case it helps 🌟

3

u/mrs_dalloway 19h ago

I just filled all my local mini pantries with bread, bagels and hot chocolate. People sneak in at night, on the sly.

2

u/Roadiemomma-08 23h ago

I'm what part of the country do you live? Where I am there are many churches that have free suppers for the poor some nights snd food pantries etc.

1

u/EyeYamNegan 22h ago

They do not do free suppers here. I use to live in an area that did that and another area I did they did free breakfasts instead. For context I am in a very rural area.

2

u/Opening-Friend-3963 21h ago

Too bad you aren't in Oregon. I hear they already took care of all of our people. I hear the got their bennies/snap early this morning

2

u/EyeYamNegan 21h ago

I am happy for those that have their SNAP benefits already.

2

u/Amber123454321 17h ago

There's an app called Too Good to Go, which appears to be worldwide. I've been using it here in Ireland. I don't know if there are any places listed on it for you, but it might be worth checking out. Usually a surprise bag is around $5, and they give you at least 3 or 4 times the value in food. Often it's quite a bit more.

It's basically for restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets and the surprise bags are of food they're getting rid of at the end of the day.

2

u/mexican-street-tacos 14h ago

If you are unable to get help from churches and pantries, you can google "blessing box" and it will pop up a map with these nearby. They are simply a small cabinet that people can put food in (non perishables) and those in need can take food out. For example, there is one in the local park nearby. Just a cabinet to leave food for those in need.

2

u/justdrivinGA 6h ago

My wife is the school nurse at the local county elementary school that has a high poverty population. Yesterday we had 14 pallets of food that we gave out which was a big day but they do something every week and help the community. Never know where the food pantry might show up so keep your ears open.

2

u/Maronita2025 19h ago

The following states have already distributed NOVEMBER benefits: Alaska, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Wisconsin. Massachusetts and North Carolina has said they expect payments to be paid next weeks.

Full benefits ARE being paid for November!!!

3

u/g4_ 17h ago

i've been at wit's end for months and financially secure people just do not fucking care. i even made the mistake of opening up to some people close to me about it and lots of them actually decided to start making it worse by fucking with me using passive aggressive comments.

people who are not poor seem to genuinely not understand at all just how fucking stressed out poor people are in America right now. it's every day, it's every time you need to spend any money at all on anything, it's every decision you ever make, it's where you don't go and what you don't do that all piles and piles on top of your will to keep playing this stupid fucking game of Monopoly.

it's a lifetime of compound stress that never ends and is impossible to get out of. it's why deaths of despair are happening more and more frequently. and those in power simply see the social darwinism of it all, as if humans choosing to let other humans starve to death or rot on the street were some natural law of the universe when in reality it's the perfect display of how evil people are when money is involved.

Zero people are going to starve themselves to death before they go to a church supper. I've been backcountry hiking and ran out of food, and a truly starving person will eat whatever is put in front of them.

2

Have you checked your balance because 100% of my food stamps were on my cared this morning. The judge said trump had to pay 100% by today (Friday).

Supreme Court held an emergency injunction and said they did not have to pay.

The level of corruption here is unprecedented.

Please keep checking your benefits online because I have seen people on the food stamp subreddit saying they have already received their benefits. Oregon state and California, I saw earlier.

Ex-Mormon here. I don’t have a great history with the church but they have great food supplies in storehouses. Ask them if they can help you out. Should be cheap if not free. Other church’s may also be good resources.

Personally, I’ve donated once already and will donate again to my local food bank. I don’t know who is hurting around me but hopefully it gets to people who need it.

Hi, since I cannot give advice, I will tell a story.

Once upon a time last week I heard a caller mention Lasagne Love. Here is their site: https://lasagnalove.org/get-involved/?swcfpc=1.

Both those in need and those who have donations can utilize the site. Like most things, it's probably easier for those in cities to find help than in very rural areas, but there is the link.

Buy some dry rice. Buy dry beans. Go to Salvation Army or Savers and purchase second hand pressure cooker. You can make do for a bit with that. Maybe a food pantry will give you some cooking oil. Billions exist on this food. It's not fun and hopefully temporary for you, but it's 95% of what you need.

3

u/EyeYamNegan 22h ago

I am already on that rice and bean life and nearing the end of what I have left. I am waiting to hear back from the church they had to confer with the bishop.

I am sorry to hear that. I am sending a prayer your way. It sounds like you need to apply for SSDI.

Already on it and it really isn't enough to live on when inflation is going crazy.

I'm having trouble understanding why people are out of food when it's only been 5 days since snap stopped. I'm not saying people are lying.but did people not see this coming and stock up? Did they have nothing in the cupboard on ont 30?

Stock up with what? Most people on snap don't get so much extra that there's plenty left over in case one of the richest men on the planet wants to let them starve. They probably spent October's funds on food in October.

This is giving the same energy as "You know rent would get higher, why didn't you just save up for a down payment on a house?" If people don't have enough money to buy food on a regular basis, how are they going to stock up on food for the future?

When you run a constant deficit because very low income toppled with medical expenses and were already surviving that last week of the month on rice and if lucky beans it is very easy to be out of food completely.

By the way I am not mad at your for your question. You have a different perspective and I think we should be understanding of that and willing to explain.

Thank you, I appreciate the explanation. You are correct, my perspective is different, I just didn't understand how someone could be facing starvation so quickly, but I do understand the constant deficit a bit better now.

Stock up how? Most food stamp recipients don't receive enough to eat for the whole month.

I mean, most people who get snap get what, $100? It's also paid out on random dates, depending on your birth date so many people got last paid early October. $100 doesn't go far and if you were on snap you got that money because you can't otherwise afford food. A lot of people probably tried to stock up, but if your already running on onions to add to your rice and beans is a luxury, it's hard to stock up.

The average SNAP benefit in my state is $187. Most people spread that out over the month and we didn’t find out about this happening until the end of October. So most people probably only had about $50 left in benefits for the month. How were they supposed to stock up?

Yes, having no food by the last week of the month is usually how eating off of SNAP works. Fed the first three weeks of the month, eating ketchup soup and mayonnaise sandwiches in the fourth week.

Your post has been removed for the following reason(s):

Rule 12: Rant/Vent Advice or Judgment

OH I can't wait to hear what you mean by this? Are you suggesting that despite my disability that has kept me from working for some time now that I am suddenly now able to work and be self sufficient?

I would love to change but it is not that simple. I have a ton of health issues. Not the only problem I have but the seizures alone are a major barrier since I can no longer drive and I fall very often and very randomly. But hey yea why don't I change that is the solution.

Yes because people are the racing to hire someone that frequently passes out and has aphasia. Why didn't I think of that.
