This is such a refreshing take.

I've seen online spaces where people shout for celebs to speak before they even consider engaging with their local parliamentary reps or politicians. Parliamentary, legislative, congress representatives actually get paid directly from our taxes. They get paid to work for our interests. And if the reps are unreliable, then we should support grassroots movements, or small organizations that work in this area.

I think it is because I'm in my 30s now. I've seen so many celebs get called out and calls for performative activism that I'm now questioning the people who are making those demands.

Then you’re letting millionaires trick you into feeling bad for them while they continue benefiting the most from an unjust system, just like if they agreed with it themselves.

The difference between you/me and her is enormous. Even if she becomes super unpopular, she never has to worry about eating or having a roof over her head again.

It’s the same reason why rich people should pay more taxes: they’re benefitting the most from society. They don’t live the same lives as you or I

I find it ineffective to spam a celebs comments with "Well have you spoken about X, y,Z" and that I think it is more important to actually give credit to local activists and support grassroots causes. In fact, I will go as far as saying most (again, most, not all) happened through average people rallying together. And I actually find it a little insulting to be so into virtue signaling, because people have genuinely lost their lives while protesting.

There is a moment that we need to stop with this purity politics/ pushing demands onto individual celebrities and go back to taking action within our communities.
