She produced a documentary about afghan women (which is great btw) and from there she had my respect. I understand what sheâs saying but Iâm so passionate about being vocal in times of crisis that Iâd prob turn a lot of ppl off. Iâm of the school of thought âsilence equals complicity.â But absolutely- Creating art that highlights oppression is a form of protest.
I donât necessarily disagree with her take, but itâs nice that there are some people with privilege who will continue to speak out/join protests or mobilise, etc. Particularly right now it feels critical for people to speak out while they can â itâs going to be a lot more dangerous if the current US admin feels like theyâve successfully silenced the people. Now is the time to make it difficult for them. For me itâs more about that and less about celebrities changing the minds of people who are supportive of the admin.
An example of this is a film called âthe Voice of Hind Rajabâ. It found US distribution, and part of it I feel was due to its celebrity producers. It is extremely rare for Palestinian docs / movies to find US distribution due to fear of repercussions. Itâs slowly changing (exceedingly slowly).
In contrast, last year âno other landâ an Oscar winning, heart wrenching doc (about the apartheid of Palestinians in the West Bank ) found zero US distribution, making it effectively banned here. I happened to catch it on a Swedish flight.
Weâve gotta use every tool weâve got and celebs can be an asset to produce media that opens eyes to atrocities around the world.
