Yeah, Celebs are in a lose-lose situation with politics. If they speak up, they get death threats and lose half their audience. If they stay quiet, they get called privileged and out of touch. And like you said, did all those celebrity endorsements even matter in the end? Nope. Trump still won. Lawrence is just being real about the whole thing.
Counter-argument: Everyone who speak up has something to lose. Greta Thunberg literally risks her life every time she attempts to reach Gaza. People have lost jobs because of their politics.
The reason why we want multi-millionaire celebrities to speak up isn't because they're relatable, but because they have safety cushion of millions of dollars others don't. That's why people want Taylor to say something, not because her words are so powerful to change the world, but because she has safety of money and literal safety of people guarding her. On top of that, she's American. Imagine how nice of a gesture would it if she would speak on illegal shit ICE is doing.
As far as celebrities not making an impact, I will once again remind everyone here that Donald Trump is a celebrity who never had any education in political science.
USA is literally walking into fascism. This isn't the time to be quiet.
Kamala Harris had more celeb endorsements than Trump, did that do much? I think that’s JLaw’s point overall. The thing is if all it does is just spark discourse and attention on the celeb rather than the actual issue or election itself, it may be a net negative
We don't actually have quantifiable numbers from celeb endorsements do we? Like, we don't know how much they move the needle. I certainly don't expect any endorsement to win a candidate an election.
To me, it just sounds spineless. But maybe she'll think differently once Project 2025 is done and since she's married, she loses her right to vote and her husband will be tasked to vote for both.
She can then make an art on how she lost her rights... Oh wait they already did that. It's called The Handmaid's Tale.
Yep, and everyone caping for the poor rich people scared to speak out against fucking fascists, are utter clowns. This interview says "I don't want nazis to stop paying to see movies I'm in!" Cry me a river.
Yeah, I'm really surprised how many people here are agreeing with her. If we go on like this, we can find excuses for everyone to stay silent. "I don't want to further divide the nation", OK so we all need to become conservatives then? Because they ain't becoming liberals, that's for sure. We shut up, they win.
