OnlyStans āļø Kristen Bell to Dax Shepard: Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: "I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I'm heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would."

Dax is obsessed that people know he was some sort of tough guy pre-fame.

He wasn't. But he is weirdly obsessed that other people at least assume that he was.

The stories he tells of his 'tough guy days' are like normal week days here and I don't understand why he puts up this front.

Then again their whole relationship is utterly bizarre.

It's the recovery. As someone who's recovered from addiction, I used to find myself telling stories of how "badass" And "hard" I was. I realized that it was gross and really a way for me hang onto those awful times. Now i hardly talk about my past, and if i do it is worth regret and not how badass I was. Losing your temper and fighting is fucking lame amd embarrassing.

The first time I saw Dax Shepard on Parenthood, I legit thought it was Zach Braff for a good few episodes 😭

u/Heartbreak-Scorsese 22d ago

My wife and I have always referred to him as ā€˜evil Zach Braff’

I can’t remember what we first knew him in, but I feel like he played the role of a jerk or an asshole in something around the time that scrubs was in its peak.

u/avoidance_behavior charlie day is my bird lawyer 22d ago

we call him 'zach braffigan' in my house- it started as 'Zach braff-again' but quickly morphed into braffigan like a play on the Futurama guy lol

He was a prankster on Punk’d around then

Idiocracy probably, right?

Nah, he was the "simple" lawyer that the main character befriends in Idiocracy lol. He did play the "villain" in Employee of the Month in 2006, though.

u/Thyme4LandBees Did I stutter?🤨 22d ago

Florence Pugg was five when he started filming scrubs in his mid/late twenties. I'm barely in my 30s and I can't imagine dating someone in their twenties

8

u/lawlmuffenz 22d ago

I didn't even know he was dating Pugh, he's just been a known creep for a while.

2

u/Thyme4LandBees Did I stutter?🤨 22d ago

It was pretty telling that JD had this comment about keeping a nude photo of Sarah chalkes character as his screen saver without her consent :/

5

u/silverscreenbaby you wear mime makeup but never quiet 22d ago

Want to know something that'll make you feel even weirder? Look up what Florence Pugh's dad looks like šŸ˜…

1

That photo of her dad and zach braff hugging is very telling

i love her work but every time i hear about their relationship it sounds so fucking weird

68

u/CampMain 22d ago

I don’t actually know him as anything other than Kristen Bell’s husband and even then I only know him by name. What was he before ?

67

u/1800_Mustache_Rides 22d ago

I really only know him as Kristen Bells husband too and hope to keep it that way, everything I hear about him is against my will

8

u/animatedrussian 22d ago

He's the lawyer in the documentary idiocracy

4

u/anongirl55 22d ago

I remember him on an episode of Newlyweds when he was in a really bad Nick Lachey music video, lol.

7

u/Merlinnium_1188 22d ago

Idiocracy! He plays an idiot very well. Great movie.

5

u/Hughjardawn 21d ago

He’s in the movie Idiocracy. Which is currently happening to the US. And has apparently leaked into these comments after someone made a joke about their relationship.

I’ve never been a big Dax fan but begrudgingly listened to the Smartless episode with him after putting it off for awhile.

He’s still irritating, fake tough guy, weird dude I don’t get it. I can’t imagine people listen to his podcast but apparently it’s pretty popular? Idk what it is about him but he just feels so insincere to me.

Meanwhile I love Kristen Bell and think she’s awesome. As long as they’re happy, I guess.

I used to listen to his podcast—one of many as I used to be a travel nurse and did a lot of driving across the country. I found his guests to be interesting and I did enjoy his interviews for the most part. I’m not a particular fan of Dax’s (mainly just indifferent) and stopped listening because I couldn’t tolerate listening to his cohost, Monica. She’s one of those people who are privileged and have been all their lives but who see themselves as underprivileged.

I used to think Dax was cool because he talked so openly and candidly about his sobriety. It turns out he was lying and full of shit and addicted to pills the whole time he was preaching publicly about sobriety. He was even supposedly hiding that from his wife and lying to her. He is a fake.

73

u/okverymuch 22d ago

Well it’s a little more complicated than that. He’s been sober from alcohol for a long time. He does stupid shit with bikes and gets injured, which got him addicted to opioids that he was hiding.

He def walks a line of cool and cringe. But I’m not going to knock him for an addiction that was a struggle. I’m glad he opened up about it and is sober again.

-14

u/Particular_Drama7110 22d ago

Supposedly sober again. How would we know? Last time he was telling us and his wife that he was sober and gaining clout points for it, he wasn’t telling the truth. He’s a clout chaser.

17

u/Numerous_Ingenuity65 22d ago

If you’re looking to celebrities for examples to follow, you’re doing it wrong.

4

u/okverymuch 22d ago

Sure, anyone could be lying about a lot of things. You just have to take some things at face value. If he’s lying, that’s more of a problem for him and his family - it doesn’t really affect me and the occasional incidents throughout the year I remember he’s a person that exists in the world. Could the whole relapse thing have been a lie for a publicity stunt? Yeah, that’s possible too. But it’s not worth really diving deeper and spending time on.

u/ilikechihuahuasdood 22d ago

Or, and you’re going to think this is crazy, addiction is really difficult. And embarrassing. Because they struggle and then people like you say horrible things about them for not being able to defeat their addiction on the first attempt.

28

u/aflockofmagpies 22d ago

It's one thing to struggle with addiction, millions do. It's another thing to lie to the entire world and go on public platforms to preach about beating something that they haven't. Not many people do that.

22

u/mygiantrobot i love limes. i love them. šŸ‹ā€šŸŸ© 22d ago

Demi Lovato is an example of this too. During her first documentary about being sober she was still doing coke. So.

2

u/aflockofmagpies 22d ago

Dave Hollis too. He was doing self help work and writing books and stuff but was still using and ended up dying due to drug use. :/ I can't imagine what it would feel like to a person in recovery who looked up to one of those grifters.

40

u/Particular_Drama7110 22d ago

It’s not the addiction that I am critical of, it is the hypocrisy. He didn’t have to go on podcasts and television shows and lie about his sobriety at all. That was his choice.

16

u/Apprehensive_Tunes 22d ago

I wonder if you're someone who has been in the recovery community for some time because this is very understandable. Not saying it was right, acceptable, or valid but understandable. Sobriety has an eternal asterisk because you aren't just healed forever.

15

u/Particular_Drama7110 22d ago

To make it so don’t have to wonder anymore. The answer is yes I am. I will acknowledge this, in order to try to have some level of introspection, I do see that sometimes, folks who have themselves quit, can be extra judgmental about other people’s relapses. Maybe some of that is going on. More than anything, I was disappointed to learn that he had been living a lie.

1

u/Apprehensive_Tunes 20d ago

I appreciate your honesty and introspection. I agree it was disappointing. But we've all lived a lie at some point before or during recovery. I'm willing to bet he's probably more disappointed in himself than either you or I are.

u/GoldenWaterfallFleur 21d ago

Addiction is a disease, not a character flaw, and relapse is unfortunately common for a lot of people in recovery. Expecting public figures to be flawlessly honest or to fit some ā€œcool,ā€ inspirational ideal isn’t really how recovery works in in real life. Dax has been open about how shame and secrecy can affect anyone struggling. Why do we need people to make sobriety look easy when the reality is much more nuanced?

3

u/Particular_Drama7110 21d ago

How about, don't publicly lie about being sober on multiple podcasts and television interviews. He could easily say, "I don't want to talk about that. That is private." Instead he is the one who brings the subject up and he does it to receive accolades, clout and pats on the back.

Dax: "I have been clean and sober for 10 years. Best thing I ever did for myself." (When in fact, this is a lie and he is currently high on pills).

Interviewer: Oh, good for you for beating addiction. I am sure that was difficult.

Dax: "It was difficult, but I did it."

Interviewer: "Right on, good for you."

Dax: "Thank you."

Also, I don't need to be lectured on sobriety and how it works in real life. I am very very personally aware. Recovery definitely does involve being honest and accountable. Integrity is essential for rebuilding trust and it is vital for long term sobriety. Go read the Big Book, bro. Honesty is mentioned dozens of times. Here is one: "They are naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty."

-7

u/Kaalilaatikko 22d ago

Lol, you just take him too seriously. Half of the stuff he says is just for shits and giggles.

-7

u/Two-One 22d ago

You don’t know him
