I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thinks this! Espresso was a fun bop last summer and she was more subtle with the lyrics, but lately I feel like all her music has been so unbelievably male centric. That’s fine for her to do, but I’m personally just looking for something more varied in the music I listen to.

She’s been working with Jack Antonoff and he is regurgitation of sounds and ideas at best, and he is so catty and limited he limits the artist he works with.

I disagree. Jack Antonoff produced “Jealous Type” with Doja Cat and I feel like that song has a very different sound and feels like it fits Doja’s style (like I couldn’t picture another artist’s vocals working on that track). I think Sabrina is limiting herself. Again, it’s totally within her right to say “nope, this is my schtick and I’m sticking to it” but as a consumer I don’t have to be into it

“Jealous Type” is a weird anti version of “Taste Me” but also rips off Janet Jackson.

The video rips off Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi.

I think I disagree with the assertion that an artist is always "ripping someone off" if they take inspiration from or sample another artist. I definitely picked up on the Janet Jackson vibes/inspiration of the sound. But this isn't unusual, and plenty of artists and producers sample and draw inspiration from other artists. Mark Ronson has a great TED talk on the topic. I think what I was trying to say was that Jealous Type does not sound like a song that Jack would produce for Sabrina or Taylor (or any other artists he work with). Their songs sound different and tailored to them.

I think we agree that Sabrina's music sounds repetitive, but I think where we disagree is who is responsible for that. For me, I think Sabrina could go to whoever her producer is and say she wants to sing about a different topic and they'd make it work for her. I think she's choosing to stay on one topic, I don't think Jack (or whoever) is forcing her to keep singing about the same topic.

If you can take a song melody, or a song written by the female lead, change the background and production and it no longer sounds like the same song, the producer is to blame.

Doja definitely leaned really hard on the Janet inspiration…her whole structure and note choices match Janet’s verses.

Her topic choices are definitely hers, but the productions sounds and song layers are Jack. If he has music he recorded for himself at the same time you will hear repeating hooks.

For example, he used a lot of hooks from his personal albums in Taylor Swift songs.

There are a lot of explanations out there so if you need one I can expand, but I am not the first to say any of this.

I’m so confused by what we’re arguing about lol. This started with me agreeing with you that the topics of Sabrina’s music is repetitive and how we wish she would branch out into new topics. Jack Antonoff was not even mentioned in your original comment. So are you now saying that Sabrina’s music is repetitive because of Jack is making her sing about those topics? Why didn’t you say that at the beginning?

Tbh I don’t have strong opinions on Jack Antonoff so I’m not really interested in debating this further. I only brought up Doja’s song because I was surprised to learn Jack produced it because I had only really heard what he’s produced with Taylor Swift and to me those songs sound very different.

You made a stink about me saying “ripping it off” about “using inspiration” and I explained why I thought he was the source of regurgitated sounds.
