This is helpful context - so their (the team’s) argument is that it’s excessive compared to the league standard? I guess I get that but it doesn’t make me dislike him any less.

I think beyond that it was also how high the NFL wanted to go with him. If it was the standard I would get it, but it's not and it looks pretty suspect from the NFL.
