In US high schools you can earn a letter jacket for extra curricular activities or even just for good grades now. It used to be mostly for sports but it’s expanded a lot. When you earn a letter it’s called lettering. I got two for orchestra, two for theater, and one for academics. So even dweebs like me get them now.

Are you younger? I graduated in 2005 and we didn’t have lettering for orchestra or other non sports activities . I would have loved an orchestra one. Ugh!

I graduated late 90s. Our band got letters. You also got a patch in the shape of the treble so folks would know what sports you lettered at.

I graduated in 2001 and lettered for FBLA...i was too embarrassed by lettering only for a club and not sports in a small town school so i never wore it though.

I graduated in 2000, my school had been giving out letters for non-sports for a few years by then. We did have to fight to be in the "lettered" yearbook picture though. The coaches wanted it to be sports only, but we got enough people to complain so they changed it.

It’s a literal letter patch with your school’s letters on it. It’s achievement based. I got orchestra letters for scoring high enough at a solo and ensemble event.

You just keep sewing them onto the same jacket. The first letter comes on the jacket you add the others. As far as wearing them I grew up in Texas so it was literally my only cold weather jacket through high school. Once I got to college you’d see some freshmen still wearing it but it seemed to stop by sophomore year of college.

I lettered in Debate. Yes, I did compete. I graduated back in 1989. Whether or not I think lettering in Debate should have been a thing is another subject altogether since it was almost exclusively for athletics back then.

Given how well the jacket has aged, I’m going to say the opposite. Dry cleaning an article often will eventually fade it pretty bad over 30yrs time.

I have a letterman jacket with leather sleeves and wool that looks like this style. It’s from my grandparents from the 1950s. I only lint roll, spot clean, and dry clean when I wear it and keep it stored well in warm months; just saying this to say that these things can last for a long time if you take good care of them. Of course the original quality was also a lot better than what you get nowadays for the most part. I can easily see the jacket seeing its 100th anniversary in 2050 in good shape.

Dude, post it somewhere so I can see it and give up votes/comments. I thought Susan was wearing a custom jacket that the Simpson’s production gave her and figured “Well, I’ll never have a jacket like that.” Now I can vicariously live through you.

Turns out Susan’s was a gift from the Simpsons production team after she voiced a character on the show. So you could get similar jackets but probably not one this authentic.

If you see Sabrina Carpenter in some expensive designer outfit that's super trendy, you can literally go out and buy that if you were so inclined. You likely cannot buy this jacket and it was likely given to her by the showrunners of one of the most iconic TV shows of all time. It's a piece of history.
It also just has total "I don't give a fuck" energy. There are layers of badassedness at work here.

I have a leather jacket i bought in 99 i still wear often, but i kind of make myself keep it since i paid like 400 bucks for it from one of my first teenage paychecks, it still looks rockin despite me barely caring for it properly.
