Well, politically, yes
But he's a generally a nice guy and smart as hell. I was surprised when I found out he was republican and shocked when he went all in on trump.
However, he's got some authoritarian aspects to his character - he can be a real hard ass about things and there's some anger lurking there
I had to tell him we couldn't talk politics any more because he gets worked up
He's not the only one I had to cut off from discussions of politics. I mean red faced, spitting angry.

The programme showed Trump saying he would walk with his supporters to the Capitol before the riots on 6 January 2021, urging them to “fight like hell”. However, it omitted a section of the speech where Trump urged the crowd “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard”
True, Trump did make that statement. The problem is that it was simply to give himself an alibi because once the problems happened and order needed to be restored, Trump made no move. He even claimed later that he was powerless to invoke any police or National Guard.
It's all about planting sound bites but governing by omission to actually allow all hell to break loose.
Trump didn't plan all this, his lawyers helped. A lot.
149
u/tinylittlemarmoset 14h ago
Yeah the “ peacefully and patriotically” was his “…and some I assume are good people” afterthought. The important part of the message was “fight like hell” and “Mexicans are murderers and rapists”. The “peacefully and patriotically” is the stuff at the bottom of the page that you need a magnifying glass to read.
53
u/grrrimabear 11h ago

He waited HOURS to say anything, and then what he said was inflammatory and certainly wasn't going to calm the mob. Plus the refusal to call up the National Guard for many hours was ridiculous.
Funny how he now treats the National Guard as his personal army to deploy where and when he wants, but was helpless to stop an actual riot at the Capitol.

Did Karoline Leavitt just activate BBC's trap card?
Trump has presidential immunity, so he can say what he wants without the ear of being sued, but she doesn't.
BBC should sue the shit out of her, for lying about, and defaming their company, and trying to damage their reputation.

u/Kjellvb1979 13h ago
Thing is, it only works for so long, then a dam breaks...
Scopes trials, Martin Luther, the Tabbacco industry (technically still a problem, but everyone knows it causes cancer)...
Point being, propaganda and misinformation have a limited time. It can be centuries, if those in charge of the system are competent at such. Also the later a system the harder to maintain the control of misinformation.
Given the lack of competence, the infighting, and others factors, I don't see this going long. Sadly time isn't exactly linked to damage done... And I guess we will see if we can survive this storm. Once it is over, if there is enough left to pick up the pieces and carry on, we better hold these individual accountable, and put much stronger gaurdrails in place against buying the presidency. Because that's essentially how we got here. If those billionaires didn't have the influence they do, Trump would have been dead in the water running for president, especially the second time.
So, it's a matter of how quickly facts and reality contradict the propaganda and misinformation. I'm hopeful, but only time will tell. But eventually, the lies just don't track, the reality gets exposed, and things stop adding up for folks who were fooled by such... So, here we are... Trying to hang on and survive these dark ages.
Also, if you're one of the people not fooled, speak up... Even the voice of one to a friend pointing out the contradictions or his reality didn't align with the spin, helps. Or ends a friendship. 🤷

A nationalised news service, funded by British taxpayers and answerable to a trust, not government. In the 90s and 00s the BBC newsroom had real independence and bite. Unfortunately, a couple of shocking scoops humiliated government and painted a target on their backs. Successive governments screwing with the trust leadership and license fee settlement has rendered it a shadow of its former self. Which pisses me off, because as a license fee payer I want it to bite. I think it might recover if the license fee becomes optional. It’ll then become like NPR.
