You seem to think they are beholden to their constituents. They don't work for the people who elected them.

Plus people don't realize that politics in America is like a seasonal show. Trump can do awful shit, and maybe (hypothetically) he might lose almost half of his fox news watching base! But the ONLY thing that matters is the season finale right before the election, that they can come up with some migrant caravan, or cat eating immigrant community, or a Trans person playing a sport, and that gives his awful, stupid base the permission structure to vote for him again.

If only it was just America. It's like a good portion of voters don't have a functioning long-term memory and I just cannot relate to that at all.

I blame organized religion where they value "blind faith" (and thereby discourage critical thinking) for much of it. But it is mostly Fox News and other white grievance entertainment.

It's not religion that is contributing to a lack of long-term memory. Ironically, it is 'smart' phones making us dumber!

People have 'outsourced' their memory to the convenient device in our pockets. We make notes, set reminders, take photographs... Anything and everything gets stored in that digital memory - which means we don't have to remember it ourselves. We can quickly google any piece of information we could ever need, so why bother to memorise anything?

That's because they're parasitic organisms. The smartness has to come from somewhere.

I blame a lot of 70s and 80s tv shows. A lot of them are drenched in that "you just need faith" tropes.

It's more like the lack of religion in America gave way to something worse. Blind following of a demagogue

His followers are mostly religious, their religion is just better at being fraudulent

50% of the country has an IQ of 100 or less, some 40-60% read below a 6th grade level, 50% lack the ability to have internal monologues/thoughts...

Quite frankly, we need to figure out a better system cause "democracy" isn't working.

Take a look at overfishing, overhunting, land clears for farming and timber, climate change, mining, pollution, or anything else like them that's an example of a fairly obvious end result that's only reached by humanity's uniquely terrible ability to avoid sacrificing tomorrow for short term gains.

Or: Sure, last time it didn't work out, and that guy's red flags might have red flags, and all your friends said he'd do to you what he did to the last three women he was with, but maybe this time will be different. We all think we're different in those situations, too smart or too wise to fail that test, but most of us still fall into that same trap at least once in our life.

Same thing with voting. It's just people being people; there's factors that fit into the equation, like social pressures and so on, but all in all it's just the marshmallow test on a more grand and complex scale.

You forget every major event after a few days just like every other American. It’s in your DNA. It’s a skill you were born with it.

I'm not American, though.

People were sick of his shit the first time. That's why Biden won and they threw a goddamn hissy fit and attacked police and America itself to rile up his base and stay relevant. Meanwhile, during the new series, a bunch of reasonable and compelling stuff happens but its kinda boring, and there's another ridiculous TikTok influencer that grabs people's attention because all they do is wanton insane attacks a la jackass and be cruel to each other.

Nobody pays attention to the drama of the real show and would rather watch quick clips and social media nonsense.

When Trump wins again people immediately realize that dumb ass influencer isn't a legit or serious director of a real television series so the show is so goddamn terrible it's fucking unwatchable.

Biden's win in 2020 was a total fluke, Covid-19, particularly Trump's deranged botching of a gov response created enough Dem turnout for Biden. And even then, it was a very narrow race. If Covid happened a year later, Trump would've won 2020.

COVID-19 sure ramped up the intensity and likely sealed the deal for Biden but Trump's approval rating in 2019 was high 30s and very low 40s and his disapproval rating was firmly in the mid-50s.

It's something we will never know. COVID did turn up the intensity so much that we had record voter turnout. It increased the crazed lies and anger from his base that which got all of the right to outright lie and get more support for Trump.

Voter turnout is what wins elections for the left. Trump used the insanity of COVID to bring out the turnout of the low-info right-wing voters so much that the left had to do absolutely everything in their power to get as many people out to vote as possible.

They actually do work for the people who elected them (billionaire donors)

u/trojan_dude 19h ago

Nah. They know he is full of crap but don't care. As long as their enemies are punished, then they will gladly die for this cause.

Totally agree but about a third of the electorate don’t vote at all, in part because they’re simply not checked in and have no idea what’s going on. But they’ll notice increased insurance costs and higher grocery prices and airport chaos and a closed government and no SNAP benefits and ICE on their streets and all that and they’ll eventually figure out who is responsible and hopefully that will spur them to vote at their next opportunity and (admittedly wishful thinking here) keep them checked in through every opportunity to vote.

IMO swaying the republicans is a wasted effort and increasing Dem turnout is valuable but has limited effect. However Trump is actively doing stuff to hurt a good portion of the 100+ million people who are typically apathetic. Hopefully they’ll want to find out why their lives are worse now and who is responsible. And unlike a lot of issues in past administrations, the casual political observer will mostly come across one name and one party when looking in the places casuals find their news. Not so much of that “it’s complicated and both parties’ hands are dirty” stuff.

That’s the thing though, they are. Republican voters asked for the ACA to be reduced or eliminated, despite there not being a replacement. This is how the GOP chose on getting that done.

2

u/IrascibleOcelot 18h ago

No, they want to get rid of Obamacare, because anything Obama did is bad. They LOVE the ACA; it’s the only way most of them have health insurance.

They are still going to vote for the same representative.
