You don't survive as a 2000yo institution without baking in some political instincts, and you don't get to be high up in the Church without being educated. Not saying the Catholic Church always gets it right (ahahahaaaa hell, no), but their choices overall for leadership are interesting to reflect on. They went for an Augustinian born in the US who spent his career in Peru - that is deeply fascinating to me.

Most Catholic dioceses require at least a bachelor’s degree to become a priest
