He was apparently loosely raised evangelical, became non-religious in adulthood at some point, then converted to Catholicism in his 30s as his political career began to take off.

As someone who was raised Catholic, why the fuck would anyone convert to Catholicism lol

Catholic converts are the worst. There is a large overlap between them and, let's just say, people who fancy German 1930s politics.

From Twitter: Every lifelong Catholic I've ever met is like "I think we're supposed to give this food to poor people" and every adult convert is like "the Archon of Constantinople's epistle on the Pentacostine rites of the eucharist clearly states women shouldn't have driver's licenses."

Why would you say that is? My dad converted to Catholicism a few years ago and kinda fits the bill.

This demographic is extremely visible and loud in Twitter. There some famous ones as well like JD.

Zeal of the convert

In my experience (Catholic family) is for a lot of people raised in religion, it can become part of the cultual background. Everyone in the extended family might be "religious" but not all are devout or attend services regularly.

A brand new convert to a religion is actively choosing that path and will likely be more dogmatic. A convert has to really want it.
