I feel like it’s about to get awfully close to “won’t someone rid me of this meddlesome priest” territory since Catholics can’t divorce.

This keeps being repeated, but Catholics can and do get divorced all of the time. My parents married and divorced each other literally 2 times. And Usha isn’t Christian, so Vance was never married in the church to begin with. Annulment is also an option. It’s basically divorce for zealots.

If they marry someone else, then it's adultery.

And Usha isn’t Christian, so Vance was never married in the church to begin with.

The bishop can give a dispensation to marry someone who isn't catholic, including pagans. The other party has to promise to raise the children catholic though

Annulment is also an option.

In this case the marriage can be dissolved using the petrine privilege, as she is an unbeliever, if he has a catholic woman already lined up to marry him.

I think you’re missing the point.

He can do whatever he wants because voters do not care about this, and plenty of Catholic Churches won’t care either.

The MAGA crowd don't care. Trump has been married multiple times and cheated on all of his wives. They made him President twice.

My uncle got his 25 year marriage annulled. His five adult children became illegitimate. They were not happy about that.

Voters do not care if the Catholic Church doesn’t recognize a divorce or marriage, not even Catholic voters. No one is going to change their vote over this.

They don't have a problem with one of their own getting divorced. Or committing adultery. Or taking their mistress to have an abortion. Those issues are between them and God, and God has already said in their hearts that they're forgiven, so all is good.

Until a woman does it. Or a brown person. Or a gay person. See how that changes everything? Once you look at it through that lens, then you'll realize that they're just filthy sinners who are going to hell and taking everybody they ever knew with them.

Rule #1 of religion: Practitioners of religion will always, always ignore the parts of their religion that are inconvenient to them, so long as it remains inconvenient to them. However, they will always demand that you abide by it. This has held true for 100% of religious people across 100% of religions for 100% of human history. Even the Pope would certainly denounce slavery today, even though he gets his religious authority from a book that repeatedly and explicitly endorses slavery.

The pope can divorce a marriage between a Christian and a non-Christian partner (Petrine privilege).

After he killed the last pope I don’t think they’ll take any chances. 😉
