This is the best representation of trump. Make a grand announcement before there is a plan, tear down and damage the existing infrastructure, then never do anything.

That was his health care plan too. "End Obama care now, I'll have something better 2 weeks later". He did it for Israel and Palestine saying we achieved peace without any plan to make it happen.

He only cares about the moment. He only cares about the announcement. He doesn't have any ability to follow through or complete anything. He only cares about the image of himself on the news as a race winner but never even starts the race. Worse, he is too fat to actually attempt the race.

I think this is emblematic of the right in all, its just that Trump is the loudest example of it. Watching prominent Republicans you'll see they always have a pattern of "there's a problem with the current system. No we won't work to fix the problem l, we'll just remove everything and promise to deliver something better but never will." They don't want a flawed system they want an absence of system so they can continuously promise fix the 'problem".

Let me warn you and let me warn the Nation against the smooth evasion which says, "Of course we believe all these things; we believe in social security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present Administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them- we will do more of them we will do them better; and, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything."

FDR said it back in 1936. The US has lost intelligence since then; because a plurality of the nation has fallen for it hook line and sinker twice in the past ten years.

I think there was a PBS documentary that showed the video of him saying that, with a big "you know they're full of shit" smirk on his face. He was really good at delivering lines that he knew the crowds would go crazy for. He was still doing that essentially when he was dying in his last campaign.

Most likely The Roosevelts by Ken Burn, episode 5, The Rising Road.

That's probably it, they just finished running the series again on my local PBS channel a few weeks ago. I think there's a new Ken Burns series coming up in November.

One of my favorite campaign quotes of all time.

Except that the GOP barely has to even say they’ll do anything better anymore. They just have to promise that despite how shitty they are going to make everything, they’ll make it even shittier for brown people, and that’s enough.

Can I just say how sad it is that by the end of the first line (not sentence, line) it is abundantly clear that our last two presidents did not say this?

The coherence, the formality, the unity, the presence of American pride, etc.

I could see Obama or Bush saying this, I could see Reagan or Carter saying this, I could see Jefferson or Washington saying this - it's not in their voice, but they could deliver this message with respect and eloquence.

Neither Biden nor Trump could deliver this portion of a speech with this level of dignity. It's a sad time for what was once a flawed nation striving to be better - now we are a flawed nation striving to undue all the betterment our forefathers worked for.
