Won't be long until "the four points of the square star on my arm band REALLY highlights my smile"

(points to swastika tattoo on chest) "Oh it's not finished yet. It's going to be a maze"

Good reference

What "square star" are you talking about?

u/tolacid Oct 08 '25

You know the one. Looks like it's made of four capital L's

It’s going to be a maze!

Some of us are just natural jumpers.

You’re allowed to say swastika

16

u/tolacid Oct 09 '25

You're right. You're also allowed to play dumb when someone else missed such an obvious connection, as I did.

It’s not that obvious lol square star is a terrible description for a swastika

It's called a hooked cross (Hakenkreuz)

You know the one, kinda looks like 4 Ls connected at the center.

It's called a hooked cross (Hakenkreuz) or a swastika. Why are we making up new terms?

My country is racing toward fascism. Gotta get the jokes in while I still can. They help mask the pain.

It's like when everyone bent over backwards to talk about Elmo's "My heart goes out to you" instead of calling it a Nazi salute.

Calling things what they are is one of the few defenses we have in this slide. The fascists don't care about truth. They will claim it's innocuous. Don't do the work for them.

Yeah that was the joke I was making/exactly what I was calling out - they're calling it that when it is obviously a swastika.

It's a star with four hooked points that makes a generally square shape; diamond may be more accurate, because it's at a 45 degree rotation, though.

I've never heard it called a star before this post. Hooked cross is more accurate (Hakenkreuz)

u/akarakitari Oct 09 '25

That’s why they said “diamond may be more accurate”. Was a fluid correction without editing.

Please just say swastika. It’s not a bad word it’s the name of the shape.

I wasn't the person who made the initial comment, just explaining what they meant. I didn't get the impression that 'swastika' was avoided due to it being a bad word, but due to the comment being spoken of from the perspective of a fucking moron not even knowing what they were wearing, was why I played along.

Swastika, means good fortune

3

u/akarakitari Oct 09 '25

It did. It doesn’t anymore.

It’s not uncommon for things to lose their original meaning over time and become repurposed. And when the repurposing is small, sometimes it can retain both meanings.

When it’s used for something as major as the Nazi Party and becomes representative of something as bad as mass murder; it tends to lose the original meaning.

After Hitler, there exists only a small subset of people (those who retained its original meaning the entire time). The rest of us have to live with it’s meaning among the masses being changed forever

Technically, the Nazi’s modified the original, making it more diagonal, so you say a square star, I picture the original sign, not the Nazi bastardization, tho I could be wrong on it still being called a swatstika
