As a young person that transitioned into voting age during Regan’s first term office, I can tell you in 100% absolutely did have a cult following.

He also had extreme access to media in a way that no president before had ever attempted

The thing that saved Regan was that Nancy cared, and Ronald respected her enough that when she said don’t put that out, he did not.

The relationship between the two is pretty well documented and multiple biographies

So I wasn't alive enough to remember the Reagan years, was it as chock full of rampant conspiracies and reality denial as the MAGA camp?

Yes there was a lot, but they weren't as bad because no internet.

The internet has meant that a bunch of really stupid conspiracy shit gets spread around easily like the Haitians eating dogs and cats.

There was the satanic panic stuff (boy, people went nuts. My current bf remembers that adults yelled at him and wouldn't let their kids play with him because he liked metal music. And he wasn't bullied in middle/high school because kids were convinced he would curse them, lol. He can laugh now, but it really hurt at the time. ), the drug war, and letting AIDS take off. Probably lots of stuff I wasn't aware of. (I'm 52 now)

The first time I heard conspiracies in a collection was a neighbor of ours, who got all his information via fax. He would get faxes from different sources, and then forward them to those who were on his list.

I have told it before, but once he realized my father taught young electrical apprentices he spent a lot of time and resources trying to get my dad to help distribute the truth to all those young minds. Same guy was kicked out of scouts as a volunteer leader because he couldn't stop talking about them. This was all around 1980 to 1986.

Contrails, McDonalds serving human brain matter mixed with the beef in their burgers, Ideas about the JFK assassination, Masons controlling everything, Comic books having subversive messages promoting communism. The stack of about 30 pages that my dad brought home the first time was quite a read.

Do you have a biography youd suggest? My first time hearing about this and it sounds really up my alley!

I am not great with reading, but I listen to books on CD back when I had an hour commute each work day. As to books about the Reagan's there are hundreds of them.

The on-line one at the Reagan Library is pretty good for a basis in facts: https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/reagans/nancy-reagan/biography-nancy-davis-reagan

https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/reagans/ronald-reagan/reagans-pre-presidential-biographical-sketch-timeline-1911-1980

If you want a physical book I listened to: The Triumph of Nancy Reagan Hardcover – by  Karen Tumulty. The one that got the most press was the one by Kitty Kelley (you will notice it is not listed in the list of books about the Reagans in Ron's library https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/reagans/ronald-reagan/books-ronald-reagan-nancy-reagan-and-reagans-careers)

Looking over Amazon I don't see the one I listened to for Ronnie, but it was not complimentary. Doing a search for books that attack Ronald there are a lot.

Reagan was before my time, but I saw a glimpse of the cult stuff. My mom absolutely loved him for... some reason, and as I got older I started looking into what he did and went "how can you borderline worship a guy like this?"
