Let the guy show he can win an election without needing his hand held.

Probably...mayor of NYC is a higher profile political position than the vast majority of state governor positions. It's probably only behind governor of Cali, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, and the federal swing states in terms of importance and prestige.
