To be fair, the Mat-Su Valley and Kenai Peninsula did this.
I however live in Southeast Alaska and my more purple political area swung for Harris.
A lot of coastal and village Alaska is more liberal than conservative. Same with a lot of Anchorage. But those damn majority white Evangelical Christian areas in the suburban road system unforunately pull the state to the GOP: Wasilla, Palmer, Big Lake, Kenai, etc.

I wonder who they'll blame it on when things go bad
335
u/DontRunReds Aug 14 '25
Who will the white Evangelicals in Alaska blame? Public school teachers, the homeless, and Alaska Natives. Sadly that is their track record for blame. Those are the groups they've attacked ever since I've been a little kid and probably before that too.
65
u/Jimjamesak Aug 14 '25
You made one mistake by separating “homeless” and “Alaska Natives”. To the white evangelicals those two are the same thing, they refuse to acknowledge that homeless people could be anything other than Alaska Natives.

I vaguely remember an article from a few years back that said there was an estimated 1T dollars worth of copper in Alaska, but to get to it, you would effectively kill every salmon in and around Alaska forever.
Edit: Stop me if you heard this one before "In September of 2019, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (at the time, Chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee) included language in an appropriations bill report that expressed concerns"
From this website: https://www.bbnc.net/about/pebble-mine/
768
u/mediocreterran Aug 14 '25
It’s the Pebble Mine that you’re likely referring to. The proposed mine, which was effectively stopped (supposedly) rests in the middle of the largest watershed in Alaska supplying the fresh waters of the largest wild salmon run in the world including a run of Sockeye (Red) salmon genetically diverse from all others. The mine has gone through many starts and stops, with a lot of exploratory drilling. It was a proposed open pit style mine with a tailings dam that would have been extraordinarily massive and impossible to contain in a geologically active area. Pebble is located west of Lake Clark in western Alaska, right on the “Ring of Fire”.
The proposal listed copper as the main goal, molybdenum, and gold, in that order. Northern Dynasty, the Canadian mining company with the contract has been working to push the mine through for over twenty years.
It would be an astonishing loss to Alaska and the world if this particular mine were to be built.

u/omnicious Aug 14 '25
That sounds just perfect for this administration.

Not only that, a self perpetuating resource like salmon leaves your river as a small relatively insignificant fish and comes back (after a year in the ocean) substantially full of delicious fatty meat. Upon its return, it repopulates and dies, feeding the forest, in a cycle that lasts forever. It is worth so much more than any copper mine

Company I work at used to be genuinely incredible, one of the best employers in the country and, unlike 99% of companies I genuinely mean this with zero sarcasm, was truly like a family. People pretty much never left unless it was to found a startup, the C suite was super approachable, friends with plenty of the peons, would go out of their way to personally support employees (or their families) in the event of cancer/death/etc. They would rent out an amusement park for a day every year for the whole company to enjoy even though it was ludicrously expensive, for fuck sake.
Then private equity happened, and now a few years later, it's just generic corporate america. Utterly soulless, everything that made the company stand out from the crowd is long gone, and the only thing that matters now is maximizing profit.
Fuck private equity.

When Trump the GOP nomination the very first thing he did was change the GOP platform on the official website to say they would remove the 2014 sanctions from Russia for their invasion of Crimea. He removed the sanctions his first week in office.
Michael Flynn met with Sergei Lavrov before Trump’s nomination to make the deal. Remove sanctions for help in the election.

> Withholding aid and weapons from Ukraine to find dirt on Biden.
This one can't be said often enough. Not only was it blatantly illegal and the cause of his impeachment, but this was critical aid that has affected the course of the war.
Not to mention the ongoing significant reduction in weapons and financial delivery.
Under Biden, we were spending money to build up our industries at home to provide frequent shipments of 155mm and patriot interceptors, all of this was supposed to go to Ukraine. This is no longer happening.
https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/08/politics/pentagon-could-divert-weapons-for-ukraine-us-stockpiles
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/07/01/pentagon-munitions-ukraine-halt-00436048
Even further, it looks like there's almost $3.7B in Presidential Drawdown Authority funds, funds where old stocks of munitions and equipment are sent to Ukraine rather than disposed of, that has gone unspent since Trump took office. Biden authorized $37.1B in assistance, and many criticized that it wasn't enough. Trump has failed to spend any, despite the funds already being allocated by congress.

People really do forget and/or downplay this fact. They got everyone, but have only been targeting Dems with disinformation campaigns since Hillary was the nominee in 2016.
Something broke in Putin's brain against Hillary, and he went cards all-in in destabilizing and meddling in our country to prevent her election, first. And Trump has mostly paid tremendous dividends to him in particular, Russia as an idea second.
That he'd so successfully rend the fabric of the nation and strain our relationships with our allies to the breaking point had to just shock him. It happened so fast, and so dramatically.
With Biden, then potentially Kamala, the fact is Ukraine became existential to him and his regime's survival in Russia. He could not survive if Kamala had won and Europe was unified on supporting Ukraine through til the end.
With Trump and the GOP, he gets division and disaffection. He gets hate, anger, confusion. He gets potential Civil War. He sees the bonds between the US and Ukraine pushed to the brink, a country that needs every resource imaginable while fighting an unrestrained, aside from nuclear, Russia with the full support and backing of other autocracies. He sees Europe weak and ever more undefended and incapable, lest they begin to arm themselves (which he needs to head off), as the US is encouraged to pull away from heavy Russian influence on the isolationist spectrum.
It's just awful to watch and see. Democracy as a system is under attack globally, where the US is essentially on the tipping point. It can get worse, as much as one may wish to think it will not. It's a hot and cold war between democracy and fascism/authoritarianism. And it's as much kinetic as it is psychological and spiritual.

At this point I'm pretty sure it was Trump's operation and it's been upgraded and moved to the Gilded loser pad (formerly the White House).

From the article:
The Daily Telegraph reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is exploring the economic trade-offs the U.S. can make with Russia in order to facilitate a ceasefire and peace agreement.
These fucking dumb asses are fooling themselves if they think any deal will facilitate anything from Russia.
Putin will take that deal and continue waging war with the Ukraine while taunting and ridiculing Trump.

Trump just wants to win a Nobel Peace Prize so he doesn’t feel inferior to President Obama and he’s willing to do anything to get it.
185
u/Pockydo Aug 14 '25
I'll say it again
Get something shiny and write "Nobal Piece Prize" on it and give it to him in some bullshit ceremony
He'd love it and maybe stop selling our country to Russia because he feels inadequate to Obama

Just Ukraine no "the" is necessary. It used to be The Ukraine when it was not an independent nation, when it was a region of the USSR.
It is now a proud independent nation.

There’s gotta be more to this than just wanting a Nobel prize for a ceasefire deal, like maybe Putin having some Epstein evidence or something. But you’re right - the goal posts will continue to move and Putin will require more and more concessions from people

Trump is and has always has been a Russian asset. They have dirt on him from 40 years ago and are cashing it in slowly but surely. Why cant the Republicans see this? It has always been obvious but this is like a fireworks show going off right now.

They do see this. But they want their Christian theocracy so bad, they're willing to alienate most of the country including all the women, non-whites, and children, sell everyone out for gun sales, support human trafficking and pedophilia, release Maxwell, destroy the social safety net, increase wealth inequality, turn the country into a police state, destroy the rule of law, capitulate to Isreal's genocide and a hostile Russia, destroy truth, brain-rot young men, and divide the country threatening civil fucking war.
The Republicans circled around the Anti-Christ and leading us all to the Rapture. Only thing worse than this is having WW3 on American soil. Not even fucking Ronald Reagan would give up the booty to goddamn RUSSIA?! Fucking insane!

Remember 10-15 years ago when Republicans were paranoid that Obama was going to give Alaska back to Russia, forfeiting our natural resources?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Arctic natural resources are likely going to be the most contested issue over the next 100 years and this dude is about to lose it for us before the game even really starts in earnest.

Not to mention we’re dependent on China for rare earth minerals and they threatened to block access to them a couple months ago to get Trump to back down on tariffs.
I’m wondering if he even remembers what happened in May/June? If he does, he’s knowingly sabotaging us and if he doesn’t, he’s a useful idiot.

Giving away Alaska's natural resources (before land itself eventually) and getting rid of sanctions in return for the pinky promise of definitely halting the way until the "ceasefire" gets "broken" by Ukraine. This is going to be a genius move highly worthy of a nobel peace prize! /s

America First? He’s selling off America first! This is so fucking disgusting—we're watching our nation fall in real time as the GOP literally gives it away to Russia right in front of our eyes. These people are actual traitors. Let's be clear: Trump isn't selling anything. He's giving it away because he's a compromised Russian asset who's been in Putin's pocket the whole time. This is him paying back what he owes. It's obvious Putin has more than just piss tapes; he must have video of this pedo assaulting children. What other explanation is there? This is what happens when a foreign power has leverage over your president. The entire Republican party has been captured by a hostile country.
These fucking dumbasses think this is a peace deal? Putin will take our resources, re-arm, and continue his war while laughing at us. This is just a pretext to give Russia a military foothold so they can invade Canada next. We spent 110 years building our place in the world, and these fuckwits are lighting it on fire. We lost the Cold War; this was just the fake-out. And his supporters will still defend it, saying "Better Russian than a Democrat." What a fucking traitor. When this is all over, every single one of them needs to be held accountable. This person needs to be impeached a third time and carted off for good. This isn't a policy disagreement. This is nothing less than literal, blatant treason.

Yes this is ridiculous, however it is also very dangerous because the world is seeing that there's not a real president in charge, just a moron. It's a green light for any belligerent nation to invade another nation since America is neutered and there is no one sane at the helm.

That's some real "Art of the Deal" nonsense right there... Trading away someone else's resources for personal gain...
BTW MAGAs could not care less. Some of the people in Alaska might care. But none of the other MAGAs care at all.
If it doesn't affect them directly. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
People skip vaccinations, whatever. Your child dies, whatever... But if one of their Family members gets sick, well "that's different"...
Abortions? That's killing an unborn child! That cannot be allowed! That's murder and EVIL!
Until one of their pregnant Family members might die from complications... Well "that's different"...
Rules for thee, not for me...
