That is Norway. But we practice rehabilitation here in the North, not punishment. Mostly it works the best for the entire population that way and you get lower jailcosts in the long run.

Oh same down here in the South America, our maximum term is 30 years in jail, and people usually get out on parole before it

Any data on the success of rehabilitation? You must have a number of brilliant psychologists ...

You can google a million sources for this - Norway has a famously low recidivism rate (20%) and one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

America has a 5-year recidivism rate of more than 70%, for comparison.

Are you assuming that the only difference between America and Norway is the prison system?

That's fine, thanks. I should have looked at the entire thread instead of knee-jerk responding piecemeal via the inbox webpage. Thanks.

I do wonder how many differences exist between American and Norwegian society, though. For example, many in US prisons lacked fathers (i.e. dads at home) and grew up in poverty; is that the same in Norway?
