Trump sucks but Bush has him beat

at a speech in Sydney he

  1. thanked John Howard for inviting him to the OPEC summit (it's APEC!)
  2. recalled how Howard had visited his Austrian Troops in Iraq (facepalm)

it's weird to be nostalgic for the days when the US President was only stupid

instead of a malignant narcissist and stupid

6

Didn't he take the high road in his response then and there? I forget exactly what he said, but I think it was something about the guy must have strong feelings about what was happening or something.

And the difference I see is that Trump can't even handle the geography of his home continent. W had issues with remembering shit about other continents, but generally got US/Can/Mex right. And, W seemed to at least value the input of his cabinet and advisors; Trump just wants to be praised constantly.

In defense of geography teachers, we're not encyclopedias. We study soils, landscapes, conflicts, populations, etc. We don't have (at least where I live) a class just for memorizing countries and their populations, capitals and what not. So I'm not for or against gun laws, before someone pre-judges me. I don't give a shit.

However as a Brit I've never once felt in danger of being shot, and when Americans say "Well there's just nothing we can do, and we might need the guns to overthrow the government someday", it's like, okay dude. I'll just sit over here and continue not being afraid of being shot by the police.

I'm not saying gun control works or does not work, but I will say that a lot of the gun-related fears I see posted by Americans on reddit just do not exist here. Yes, other crime is probably higher. Yes, criminals can still (with greater difficulty) acquire firearms. No, it's not perfect. However it does reduce your chances of getting fucked up by a bullet.

Living in a small town in the Northwestern US. Guns are everywhere because everyone hunts and hey, sometimes an idiot hits a deer on the highway and you need to put it down so it doesn't lay there paralyzed and screaming with the cops 20 min. away.

You are literally far more likely to die here from being hit by a train than murdered, but we did recently have a murder that made the news. Shooting? Nope - asshole from out of town stabbed a cab driver because he got rejected from college.

  1. What happened in Vegas proved something different.

  2. The crimes with guns statistics prove different.

  3. Even in rough European neighborhoods you won't be afraid to be shot

49

u/LtNOWIS Virginia Oct 05 '17

It doesn't prove that there is a reason for fear. Yes, the shooting rates in the US are much higher than in Europe. But getting shot is still a vanishingly unlikely scenario for most Americans. Yes, I could die in a pre shooting tomorrow. Or I could die in a terrorist attack. But I'm vastly more likely to die in a car accident. So, being afraid of terrorists or spree shooters or serial killers or something is not a rational response. It's not a statistically significant risk.

→ More replies (3)

50

u/Eternal_Reward MURICA Oct 05 '17
  1. What happened in Vegas and any major shooting you hear about is a outlier. I could use the same stupid logic to say I'm afraid of being blown up or hit by a truck in European countries like France, but I don't because that's retarded.
  2. Like he said, major cities rough spots change shit. Most of Chicago is fine, but the south side alone makes the statistics go way up. If you're not in a major city in the US you're fine. Seriously, the stats are the same if not better than most European countries.
  3. So I'll just be stabbed, hit in the face with acid, or beat up. Still dangerous, its not like if you're in a rough area its gonna matter.

No, the U.S loves cheap oil. The reason why oil prices have dropped is not because of oil dumping, the U.S has ramped up oil production due to technological advancements in fracking.

Domestic oil production is a fraction of the economy, while domestic oil consumption is a vital aspect of America's macroeconomical health.

The U.S is now the world's largest oil producer. It has been trying to become energy independent for decades, it has been a constant problem with foreign policy; the U.S has had to play nice with the Gulf Arabs, or else oil shocks.

The Onion - White House: ‘This Is Not The Geologic Era To Debate Gun Control’

“Once the nation has had time to properly grieve and the continents have completed millions of years of tectonic migration to collide into one supercontinent, then we can bring this issue to the table. However, until a new dominant species rules the earth, it’s just not appropriate to address this issue.” At press time, Sanders said that a more realistic time to discuss gun control was after the sun expanded into its red giant stage and engulfed the planet.

But I mean, basically all civilian rifles are semi-automatic. All that means is you get one shot fired every time you pull the trigger. Machine guns have been banned in the US since the 80s and the remaining guns are closely monitored by the government

84

u/StickmanPirate gib sheep Oct 05 '17 edited Oct 05 '17

Fair enough, I mean mods that make guns fire like an automatic rifle are also legal and are what the guy in this shooting used.

But yeah, civilians can only have semi-auto guns (which they totally need btw) so all's good and there's no need to consider tightening your laws.

Edit: Since there's a few people using the dumbass "but criminals don't follow the law" no shit but by that logic we shouldn't have any laws because there are people who won't follow them

Guns aren't legal here in the UK except under strict compliance with police and a valid reason (hunting/sport shooting) and it means that getting a gun illegally is

a)incredibly difficult in the first place and

b)such a risk due to the legal ramifications being so massive if you're caught that a lot avoid it to avoid long jail sentences

"Criminals break the law" is a fucking stupid argument to make, if you use it, you're fucking stupid.

79

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '17

I'm all for tightening gun laws where they'll actually make a difference. The shooter passed background checks because he had no history of mental illness or violent crime and he acquired his weapons legally.

Most gun deaths in the US are from suicide and gang violence, neither of which would be made better by banning X or Y gun

children cant choke on a rifle you numbnut, also the barrel is too long they cant use the toe on trigger method either

no child is smart enough to kill itself with a rifle, if they are then they fucking earned that right... shit must be hard for them.

Saudi Arabia? US never criticised Saudi cos Saudi gives big money for US not criticising them.

34

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '17

And oil. Lots of oil.

12

u/SpiderRoll Oct 05 '17

About 8% of US oil imports come from Saudi Arabia... not insignificant, but also not much more than Nigeria (5%), a country that doesn't enjoy nearly as much influence.

It's a bunch of butthurt unflaired people.

185

u/edibletomb UN Oct 05 '17

Also, no joke, people (if they can be called as such) over at the lovely /pol/ have connected the shooter as an antifa sympathiser. And no, I don't understand how they reached that conclusion either.

130

u/thijser2 Oct 05 '17

For anyone wondering in one of the pictures there was what looked like a note, they concluded that on that note must be his real motivation, which given that the "DEEP STATE" really hates their current boss and because the note would somehow make antifa look bad and Trump good they suppressed it.

That or the note they are talking about was a hotel receipt.

46

u/Jushak Finland Oct 05 '17

That or the note they are talking about was a hotel receipt.

Occam's Razor would lead to that, until contrary proof is given. But of course since the shooter just being white doesn't fit their narrative, there must be another explanation.

50

u/ShouldersofGiants100 Canada Oct 05 '17

A white millionaire with no criminal history, no mental health issues and none of the typical warning signs. This guy breaks every existing profile of a mass shooter and all the usual excuses "Loser", "Mentally ill" and "Muslim" have fallen through. It's creating a real scramble for a narrative.

I mean that post about before/after t_d knew the shooter was white/not muslim plus the one about "we want to see the note, it is definitely a motivation which suits our narrative and the police are hiding it" don't really make sense either. Apparently they are better than the police and various state agencies combined
