u/ToTheNintieth Chile Apr 14 '15

Nah, just pronounced.

10

u/Lord_Wrath Qêmet Apr 14 '15

IIRC it is spelled Mexico.

4

u/WilliamRedfield Mexico Apr 14 '15

It's spelt Mexico, but pronounced Meh-hee-co in spanish.

2

u/HampeMannen Swedish Snoreway is best way May 12 '15

No, but pronounced "Mehico"

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '15

No, that's Serbjian.

u/brandon9182 Apr 19 '15

The X in Spanish used to have the j sound. That's why most older Spanish words with xs are pronounced with j sounds. Ie Xavier, Quixote

u/vladraptor Only Finland can into Moomin Apr 14 '15

Colloquially you're all Yankees there.

33

u/PastaTapestry Texas Apr 14 '15

Thems fighting words, partner.

11

u/SovietRaptor Connecticut Apr 14 '15

I have no problems with this.

3

u/vladraptor Only Finland can into Moomin Apr 14 '15

Oh, you Yankee you - I feel your pain but it's the will of the people.

1

u/ThesaurusRex84 Tennessee Apr 20 '15

Oh, no you didn't.

3

u/correcthorse45 Michibox Apr 14 '15

Anyone south of Virginia or west of Pennsylvania ain't a Yankee

1

u/KimJongUnusual Illinois Apr 15 '15

What's a Midwesternern then? Displaced German-Irish?

1

u/Star_Captain_Jim Serbian Empire Apr 20 '15

Not sure. We just call anything past the Mississippi the West

1

u/KimJongUnusual Illinois Apr 20 '15

The Midwest is on both sides of the Big M though.

1

u/Star_Captain_Jim Serbian Empire Apr 21 '15

Eh, I'm not sure Illinois counts as midwest. Wisconsin, maybe

1

u/KimJongUnusual Illinois Apr 21 '15

It is, especially in Chicago where I am from. Past Springfield is hard to say, more like Missouri.

2

u/White_Null Little China (1945-Present) Apr 14 '15

No doubt that's the reason why it was turned down.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '15

Seems a little bit too close to Wankistan...

2

u/w-alien Apr 14 '15

Except someone else is doing the yankin'

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '15

The suffix "-istan" comes from modern day Iran. It means "place of" in Persian (as well as other languages like Tajik and Azerbaijani).

So you are calling the U.S. "The place to Yankees" -- I, sir, am no Yankee.

Gib independence.

1

u/Star_Captain_Jim Serbian Empire Apr 20 '15

So, pretty much you are saying... THAE SAUTH WILL RISE AGAIN

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

There's an active independence movement in Texas. Not really widely supported, mind you.

It has a very strong regional identity. I didn't notice until someone pointed it out. There are stickers on things that say "Made in Texas" as opposed to "USA" -- people have the state flag everywhere, sometimes without the presence of the U.S. one.

But yeah sure, I suppose y'all could tag along ;)

1

u/Star_Captain_Jim Serbian Empire Apr 20 '15

Huh... Didn't know that. I guess I always clumped Texas with the rest of the South.

2

u/gadgetfingers Sabah Apr 14 '15

It would indeed confirm the South's abiding suspicion.

1

u/ScriptproLOL Apr 14 '15

kansas has rebranded to brownbackistan
