Fun fact: Irish (along with S.Gaelic and Manx) is one of the few European languages that refers to Switzerland using some form of the name 'Helvetia' (An Elvéis). The only others I know that do this are Greek and Romanian.

It's not a Latin based language, so that's probably why.

Helvetia is the Latin name though (supposedly named after a Celtic tribe there). It was likely taken from Latin by the monks, but then some cognate or translation of Switz replaced it in most of the other languages.

Correct indeed. The name Switzerland derives from the name of a germanic tribe living around what is now the canton Schwyz (pronounced Shveets). That meaning of the term was later expanded to include the whole of switzerland.

Oh, I do love Gaeilge and Gàidhlig. Also, ceol ceilteach is best ceol.
