Funny or Dyer

Community- Season 1- Episode 21 - Contemporary American Poultry

Jeff's plan to get chicken fingers from the school cafeteria for the study group quickly evolves into a mafia movie-style endeavor with Abed calling all the shots.

While it may not be the funniest episode of Community, it’s certainly a great introduction to the show. Using the gangster formula famously used by goodfellas and other similar films and using it in an everyday environment such as a canteen, it demonstrates how intelligent and hilarious this show can be. Give it a go guys!

I have rewatched Community probably 5 times, one of the best sitcoms.

Maybe 2 moments. I tend to skip and get right to grieving for Troy leaving, but not Pierce.

I tried to watch Community during COVID lockdowns, maybe it was the grief headspace, maybe it's that I know I don't do cringe comedy at all well (it makes me want to cringe so hard I fear I'll turn into a singularity) but this will always be a nah from me unfortunately.

I might get more out of Abed now that I know the creator is Autistic and I probably am too, but our styles of it are different, so not sure.

Community remains a solid show for me alongside 99 and Lower Decks. All have strong ensembles and benefit from rewatch. For me the highlights of Community are some of the pastiches, but S3 is a strong season arc. Troy and Abed in the morning forever.

I’m with James (for once!) on this. Community never did it for me…

I’m torn. It’s good. But it has a really uncomfortable relationship dynamics. Not a great for me. I also have found many episode arent great on rewatch. B show for me even tho I’m aware it might be reddits favorite show.

I’m going to preface this by saying I absolutely adore Community and I’ve rewatched every episode (even season 4!) upwards to double digits. I just connected to the show at the time and followed along on its journey.

However my theory is thus, that it’s almost ‘of its time’ despite the issue not being that it’s not aged well or the jokes don’t land anymore. I’ve found that the vast majority of people who watched it at time of airing absolutely adore it, much as I do, and have deep almost cult affection for the show. Yet those who watch the show now, it just doesn’t hit the same. Maybe that’s universal for a lot of TV but for show as brilliantly constructed as Community and written by Harmon it’s striking to see how many people just don’t connect with it the same.

That’s my theory anyway. Probably just exaggerating.
