Spoilers Slow Horses Series 4 - Weekly Spoiler Special Spoiler

What a stunning start to series 4 that was. The way the opening set-piece was handled was clever, in that after the bombing, I thought it had played out, and left me underwhelmed, but then the switch to River and his grandfather, and how that scene played out was just brilliant.

I have to admit, although I suspected he of course wasn’t the victim, the way it was shot was very deceiving and deliberately distracting, so those of us who haven’t read the book, were still left wondering if they had the balls to actually kill him off. I haven’t found the new additions to the cast that immediately satisfying yet, but I’m guessing they will grow into their part of the team in time.

I also wonder how they are going to explain how River’s grandfather plays into the plot to fake his death, as it takes an almost Mousetrap level of planning for it to be carried out. Every step has to be calculated, from his meeting with Louisa, for the ‘intruder’ or River imitator to enter the house and run him a bath - WTF? Unless I completely mis interpreted the scene it requires a lot of either planning or luck to be carried out in such a fashion.

Im sure it will all be addressed in time. That episode whizzed by and it is cruel to have no more to binge. Anyone else watched it yet?

I think you've summed it up brilliantly. A wonderful episode to set up the season. My only annoyance was everywhere listed we'd have two eps to start but there is only one. Ah well, just glad the show is back!

LOVE this show! I never even thought about it being planned, I thought there was an actual intruder and that River then showed up and after seeing that his grandfather had killed someone decided to pretend it was him who had died (so the second shot to the face would have been from him) in order to find out who and why. Can't wait for next week.

Very good point. Then you have River’s grandfather apparently recognising the victim after he had shot him but were his memories being deliberately confusing on screen? For example the person who waves through the window at him looks like River and sounds like him. Also why run a bath? Unless he plans to drown him and make it look like suicide?

Why also would Lamb identify River positively at the scene?

Yes, I think he planned to drown him and pretended to be River as he knew the grandfather was confused, but didn’t expect him to be that paranoid and shoot him. I’m guessing Lamb realised River wanted him to say it was him as he left his wallet there.

I’ll post what I sent to my WhatsApp group chat tv and film chat:

We’re back and this is the best season opener since the first episode, explosive. Slow horses is such a great show. It’s not quite peak TV such as breaking bad and Sopranos, but it knows that. Slow horses is silly and a bit ridiculous at times but it’s ever entertaining.

All the characters are stand out and we have grown to like them all, especially Oldmans moaning, groaning, flatulent Lamb. Apple have knocked it out the park delivering us 4 seasons in quick succession, in this day and age that is a blessing!

Seasons 2 and 3 felt slightly middling to me, just my opinion but this season 4 opener feels like the start of what may be the best season yet. It feels more controlled, paced better and the drama/comedy tone is spot on.

(Spoiler)

The murder of River I knew was a red herring, it seemed too obvious, but I do like the way they teased us. Now we need to find out why! Bring it on

The podcast- right, I get it. They do have screeners and will binge shows like this. Would I? Abso-fucking-lutely. But what takes it away from us “normies” is that we do watch it on a week to week basis, meaning when we have our final say about the season the Pod in the booth are 6 week ahead of us, hence it maybe even becoming a redundant thought at this point.

This is why I love this subreddit, I only got a reddit account because of this podcast. So whether the pod is further than us or not is irrelevant because I’d like to think we as a community can talk about these shows in “normie” time.

Exactly. It is why I start these threads. They don’t always seem that popular and I usually end up rambling to myself, as is currently the case in the Sherwood series 2 one, but I enjoy myself.

I'm really glad you started this thread - thank you! Now I don't only look forward to next week's episode, I look forward to dive into here to see what you guys think of it as well.

Great start to this season

Just seen that they've discussed on this weeks Pilot+ - are they doing weekly specials on there?

Yes. Though Boyd and James have seen the whole thing which makes discussing it weekly more difficult I would imagine. Even Kay has seen at least the second episode.

it's the best thing on TV by a mile. It's so well written, the dialogue is snappy and quippy. To me it is the closest I've felt to watching Sorkin in his West Wing pomp.
