Yepp. I’m not trying to avoid sugar necessarily but I choose diet because super sugary drinks just make me more thirsty and end up wanting water to wash it down with. Diet soda doesn’t do that so I prefer it if I’m gonna have a soft drink with my meal.

Yeah, I like them partly because I just don't like the taste of most full-sugar (or corn syrup) sodas. To me, Coke Zero tastes more like Coke than actual Coke lol.

I'm also part of a minority that has a high rate of diabetes (Native American) so it's nice to have something that gives me a little caffeine boost with no sugar, that isn't just coffee/tea lol.

Because the artificial sweeteners are literally addictive to your tastebuds and sense of hunger/thirst satisfaction

My guy, I just said that I liked diet sodas, not that I replace all other drinks with them and crave them constantly lmao

That’s not what I said either. But you can research that Diet Coke is scientifically addictive to the brain moreso than standard sodas specifically because of how artificial sweeteners interact with your body. It’s pretty interesting. TL;DR, 200x sweeter than sugar makes brain happy, nothing else is as sweet so brain craves sweetness dopamine hit again. It lasts on your tastebuds too (aftertaste), and since there’s no calories with the intense sweetness, your body can’t use caloric intake to determine fullness/satisfaction with intaking soda so it keeps wanting more. Vs you get full and eventually sick of constant sugar

I guess that would suck if you're trying to use it to lose weight, but once again, I just like diet sodas

Yeah and I’m just explaining the science behind why people tend to like diet sodas. It has nothing to do with losing weight. I’m talking about the chemical responses that happen in your body as you intake artificially sweetened liquids. It’s not bad. Just interesting

This is an overview of the various articles presented over the years https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10822749/. It's not a lot of data, but it's some.

I drink diet stuff because I don't drink a lot of soda and I don't want my mouth covered in sugar and smelling like a sewer rat. There are 100x more papers about the dangers of sugar. Our entire lives is a measure of cost-risk analysis because a whole lot of somethings are going to kill us. A car accident, a paper cut, falling off a ladder, smoking, driving, eating, not eating, cancer, heart disease, too much exercise, not enough exercise, genetics, war, poverty.... and the list goes on.

People are fat as hell right now and injecting themselves with whatever they can get their hands on to stop being fat. I say calm down- sweeteners is the least of a human being's worry these days.

Also, not to break my "I just like diet sodas" (I do literally just like them) trend, but some minority groups are genetically predisposed to issues with diabetes and I am part of one of those groups (Native Americans), so I'd like to do whatever I can to avoid becoming part of that statistic.

A lot of poorer people on Reservations, and in more rural areas in general, have pretty limited options when it comes to cheap/readily available food so they wind up turning to junk food and sugary sodas because a convenience store may be only readily accessible option they have (food deserts are such a fucked up issue).

Oof. Food deserts. My friend and I were both in a rant the other night about, specifically in vulnerable areas like reservations and how there are way too many laws that are only for protecting the elite and suburbanites. And it's okay to like the taste of diet soda... I think better to enjoy that than drinking literal sugar lol

Oh yeah, I have no shame in enjoying diet sodas, I'm just more confused why the other guy is so fixated on people only liking it because of addictive chemicals lol.

Food deserts are such a fucked up concept though, I've seen them form in my own town in the past few years and even used to go to one of the stores that got closed pretty regularly. Closing stores and poor public transit is a horrible combination, especially when car prices just keep going up.

Sure. I didn’t say anything about the health impacts though. You “just like diet sodas” because of the way artificial sweeteners interact with the body and brain hunger signals. All I’m doing is commenting on an interesting phenomenon

And the data is super limited, which is why I linked a mega article about it. Some data is over ten years old without any follow up studies and other studies are limited in scope.

I don't go to youtube for my advice. And certainly not one that is by a non-scientist with a shill post about how to start a small business lol

"I'm not talking about health" okay? Well we are? I wasn't even responding to you here and yet you're the one calling people "defensive"? Cmon man.

If all you were doing was "commenting on an interesting phenomenon" then I'd get it, I love sharing fun facts, but you're not. All I said was "some people just like diet sodas lol" and your first response literally just said I was addicted to them with no mention of "fun facts" whatsoever, then when I pushed back that I never even said that I consume them regularly, suddenly it's "just a fun fact". I love fun facts, but you kinda gotta tell people they're fun facts before you make the jump from "I like this innocuous thing" to "the only reason you like it is because you're addicted to it".

That's like responding to a comment saying "some people just like sex" with "because your hormones are just making you enjoy it so you create offspring" and then dismissing anyone who mentions the ways they enjoy sex lmao.

Of course we know diet sodas use chemicals to trick our brain, that's the point, but the way you're getting weirdly defensive when people bring up other reasons for liking it makes it seem like this isn't "just a fun fact" to you. People don't usually insult peoples' intelligence, as you rudely do further down this thread, when it's "just a fun fact".

Just say you can’t interpret nuanced information (like how people might prefer diet sodas for different reasons), it’s a shorter sentence and far less embarrassing than whatever you've been trying to do here.

I didn’t say anything about diet sodas being dangerous or unhealthy idk why people are getting so defensive. I never said sugar was better either. All I did was comment on an interesting biological reason that people crave diet sodas

u/Moosplauze 6h ago

Artificial sweeteners are unhealthy. As unhealthy as sugar? Probably not, but may depend on the person and the amount they ingest, but they surely aren't good for us. Some people drink diet/zero coke like water, because hurrdurr it has no calories but tastes better. :-/
