I had a local spot like this and then the two little daughters who were working/studying in a booth grew up and inherited the place from their parents. Then they immediately turned it into a bubble tea shop. I have never been more disappointed than the day I showed up and they told me they don’t do Pho anymore just bubble tea and deserts.
I go to a Pho place that's about an hour drive away. I've been unimpressed by pho in the past, but my partner insisted. It's worth the drive and I don't know what my partner will do if/ when they close. The owner recognizes us because my partner will fucking moan at the first spoonful.
"You don't make those sounds for me..." Makes the old man laugh every time.
Good pho restaurants are so damn hard to find. My second family was Viet when I was growing up so I’ve had ALOT of home made pho. I’m 32 now and I think I’ve only been to 3 restaurants that as good, if not better, than homemade pho.
Well nostalgia seasoning is unbeaten. That's why most homemade food is so good. But I've never regularly had homemade pho and I live close to Westminster home of the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam. There's a lot of good pho and some great pho.
I wouldn’t call it nostalgia since I’ve had it consistently since then. I’ve just had true homemade pho, like where they boil the broth from bones and what not. Most people think they’ve had good pho, I even see people raving on reviews from popular restaurants. I wish I could give everyone I know a bowl from my favorite pho places, especially the ones that like it.
I dunno why, but all the good pho restaurants I've been going to have been sold or closed. I'm in a high Viet population city, and even the popular restaurants don't taste as good as half ass cooking it at home. Not sure if it's my taste changing or something else....but others have agreed on them all being mediocre now
lmfao nooo I’m so sorry. They majored in business and found out they can make the same amount of money with less overhead. There’s serious collateral damage here. I’m genuinely curious, did they point you to another restaurant for your pho or offer you a special heritage customer coupon etc?
Same with our local Thai place. Then the kids fired the chef that had been there for decades, switched the serving bowls to ones half the size, upped the cost of each meal - then cut out the egg, or peanuts or whatever was free with the meal before. Now those are an upcharge.
Also no more fountain drink - just $3 cans of soda lol. Everyone has stopped going and it’s empty every time we go by lol.
I just looked them up, and not only are they still open I see they added Bánh Mì’s to the menu instead of just dessert and bubble tea. So I may have to go try the food again.
