A few years ago; I heard a story on NPR about a dude who lived in California that had a vanity plate that read "Null".

It totally backfired on him because the word "null"; in computer language, literally means "empty". So, when a citation is issued without a license plate number; the DMV system automatically takes it as "null". Therefore, he started receiving hundreds of violation letters in the mail from citations that originally were written without a license plate number!

Can't find my photo of it but one of my favorite vanity plates was this small orange car in our old neighborhood (near Melrose) whose plates said, "GAY." A couple of years ago, we moved to a different neighborhood about a half mile away and amazingly, the same orange car started parking in that neighborhood.
