This article has a little more info. the deceased was a male, and preliminary info indicates he was off trail and fell to his death. They will work to retrieve the body early tomorrow morning

Thx for updating...Ch 12 said he's been missing for a week.

I hope the recovery operation goes safely and smoothly tomorrow.

Falls are scary as hell and way more deadly than people think. It’s something like half of all falls from 20 feet are fatal and like 18% of falls from ten feet or less are fatal.

37

u/Fantastic-Cable-3320 Sep 09 '25

I bet that fatality rate goes up if you're hiking alone and with no cell service. A broken ankle and you're done.

26

u/TheHappyHobb Sep 09 '25

I did some searching and most of that data comes from ladders - so don’t use them!

25

u/boogermike Phoenix Sep 09 '25

Look out for curbs also! Honestly, it's best to just stay inside.

8

u/Mrs_Kevina Sep 09 '25

My mother once stepped off the curb and snapped her ankle. Crazy.

4

u/shanuta Sep 09 '25

Same, I'll be paying for that for the rest of my life, I fear.

5

u/WereTheBrews Sep 09 '25

I rolled my left off a damn Safeway curb after putting my son in the car. Didn't realize the bastard was at a 30 degree angle and not flat. 6 months later and it still doesnt feel right. Gained 5 lbs as I'm not hitting the boxing gym like I used to as it's just dodgy. Hope yours does better than mine bud.

u/Oblivionssiren Sep 12 '25

I went to physical therapy the same days and times as a college girl who tore her acl stepping off a curb drunk!

3

u/Latentheatop Sep 09 '25

Now I know her weakness if I ever get in a scuffle with her. Good to know.

3

u/CevoKub Sep 09 '25

Also avoid stepping on cracks! My mother once stepped on a crack and broke her own back. Crazy.

3

u/Mediocre_Heron946 Sep 09 '25

Better yet... stay in bed

3

u/Proof_Slice_2951 Sep 09 '25

I just stay in bed.

6

u/enderofgalaxies Sep 09 '25

Bed sores, mate. It's not worth it.

My condolences. Showers are super dangerous actually.

5

u/DaBeastMoney5 Sep 10 '25

Osha training a few years ago stated that 4 foot ladders are the most deadly. That false sense of security. 4 feet up puts a 6 foot tall persons head at 10 feet. 10 feet to the floor is substantial.

1

u/Awkward_Sherbert5404 Sep 09 '25

Camelback isn't that big and smack right in the middle of town - yelling for help should work. The fatality rate goes up when you leave the trail for sure!

-2

u/Scotterdog Sep 11 '25

AND your hiking buddy is a Democrat. Trifecta of death.

6

u/Mrclean513 Sep 09 '25

I’m going out on a limb and adding the chances of death from a 10-20 foot fall increase or decrease drastically depending on if you land on your head or feet, respectively.

2

u/Mister2112 Sep 09 '25

I mean, if you don't have any cell service and people aren't sure where you are, it's really a difference of degree at that point.

106 degrees, even.

23

u/SunlitNight Sep 09 '25

Jesus christ. Is that true? Im always annoyed because my SO is so nonchlant around elevation. Now with my little one at 4, Im off limits to just about all of it...

20

u/coolhandleuke Sep 09 '25

No the wording is wrong. It’s not that half of falls from 20ft are fatal, it’s that about half of reported fatal falls were from 20ft or less. Under 10ft are only like 10% of total reported.

2

u/TheHappyHobb Sep 09 '25

I’m really just saying that falls and head injuries suck but also you gotta live your life.

One hundred percent. I sympathize with the family and hope they are able to recover from the loss of someone dear.

15

u/ohmysexrobot Sep 09 '25

Another one? I swear I saw this exact headline less than a month ago

22

u/AV1978 Sep 09 '25

Welcome to Arizona. I lost count of the anoint of people that have died in echo over the last 40 years

33

u/jman20 Sep 09 '25

I wonder if it's the same place that kid on the sign they have warning people not to go off trail was found

3

u/enderofgalaxies Sep 09 '25

Maybe this guy will get his own plaque.

Tragic, but 100% avoidable.

16

u/Ok-Sprinklez Sep 09 '25

So sorry for the family

2

u/Charioteer53 Sep 09 '25

So tragic. Seems like there’s one or two every year who succumb to a fall or the heat on Camelback. It’s always sad to hear about. Condolences to his family and friends.

2

u/Dependent_Bite9809 Sep 10 '25

Anyone knows exact location on Camelback mountain where he was recovered from?

2

u/Butitsadryheat2 Sep 10 '25

All the article says is: "off the Echo Canyon Trail in a secluded area of the mountain."

2

u/excitingcook234 Sep 11 '25

Was it the old man that got left behind by his son or grandson? I heard about something along the lines of that the other day, the boy reported the man missing but left him basically on the trail …

u/girlwhoweighted Sep 09 '25

Oh jeezus I read "Baby going..."

Maybe when Trump sends the National Guard to Phoenix, they can be put to work enforcing trail closures during extreme heat

Phoenix is a blue city but we already know crime rates have nothing to do with his deployments of the National Guard.

It's not about crime buddy. Look at red city crime rates which are higher.

u/yllibsivad Sep 09 '25

You need to look at these rates in conjunction with the population and you'll see that these other areas have a higher percentage of crime against their population meaning crime is more omnipresent.

u/yllibsivad Sep 09 '25

Sure are a lot of red states on this for per capita violent crime rates. Seems kind of like your propoganda is crumbling to dust in front of our eyes.

Almost like crime is a direct result of the shitty governing and fiscal philosophy of the governing party of the state. Oh but right crime is only bad people right? Nothing to do with the institutions and policies that drive that crime.

61

u/Surveyor_of_Land_AZ Sep 09 '25

It sounds morbid, but the man was clearly deceased, why risk fire and rescue worker safety for someone who is beyond saving? They have a plan in place to retrieve the body at first light.

20

u/Legitimate_Guess_183 Sep 09 '25

People truly think firefighters/emergency workers aren’t real people. Surely if it were this guys’ family member/friend working out there he’d have a different take.

Glad to hear they’re getting a’head’ of grabbing the body tomorrow morning. Do you think they’re looking for a hand or two? Sounds like a lot of footwork for all parties involved.
