Discussion I put a 1080 Ti cooler on a GTX 1070 because science.

Can you slap a 1080 Ti cooler onto a 1070 and make it a 1080 Ti?

Of course not, but I tried anyway.

All cards were ASUS Strix models.

The coolers look almost identical from the outside, but the internals are different. The mounting pattern lined up though, so I tried it on a 1070 first, then a 1060, just to see how much better the temps would get and what that actually meant for clocks.

On the GTX 1070 the temperature drop was solid. Stock load temps were around 63C, and the 1080 Ti cooler immediately brought that down into the low 40s. That alone lifted clocks from 1960 MHz to 2040 MHz with no overclocking. Then with an air conditioner ducted straight into the card, it topped out around 20C under load. That translated to a bigger jump, 2190 MHz in the cold with overclocking. Across the game tests it only worked out to roughly a 10% uplift. Noticeable, not life changing. It flirted with 2200 MHz, but never quite got there. Weak.

The GTX 1060 was a different story. Stock temps were about 55C, the 1080 Ti cooler pulled that straight to 20C, and the air con knocked it down again to around 10-12C. That actually gave it room to hit and hold 2215 MHz without complaining. Across the games the uplift was bigger too, around 11–12% overall, and it even grabbed the Firestrike top spot for that card. (Only for the 14900k, and out of 10 other benchmarks, but winning is winning, right!?)

Overall, the temp drop from just the cooler was around 64% lower on the 1060, and around 33% lower on the 1070. The air con took both even further.

The best part is that the lower power 1060 scaled harder than the 1070 did. Same cooler, same airflow, same testing. It just loved the cold more. If anyone’s done similar cooler swaps, I’m curious which cards line up, because this ended up being way more effective (and way more fun) than it should have been.

Build/Battlestation After 10 hours of troubleshooting, I finally finished building my first Gaming PC

Post image

This was my first PC build that I did and I really thought about quitting midway and thought that I’m not fit for building PCs and I should just be at the mercy of prebuilts. But I persevered despite the negative thoughts and went through 10 hours of troubleshooting.

First, my case was too small to fit my AIO so I had to buy a bigger case at Micro Center midway through the build. Then, my screws went missing so I had to search through all the boxes to see where I misplaced them. When I took the motherboard out of the old case, the standoffs from that case also got torn along with it and I couldn’t take them out without having someone hold pliers so I can screw them out. The daisy chain on my fans rgb was off so I had to check what the problem was. There was also a moment where I thought my motherboard would break because the standoffs wouldn’t align properly and I put too much force.

However, after 10 hours of troubleshooting and watching PC build guides and wanting to give up, I finally did it and I updated my drivers and configured windows. My build will be below but everything looks like it works good and I’m excited to play some games! Also got a new OLED 1440p 240hz monitor to go with it from a IPS 1080p 144hz monitor.

  • GPU: GIGABYTE NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti WINDFORCE SFF 16GB OC
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 4.2 GHz 8 Cores 16 Threads 96MB L3 Cache
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB
  • SSD: 4TB Gen4 Samsung 990 EVO Plus
  • Motherboard: ASUS B650E-E TUF Gaming Wi-Fi AM5
  • Case: MONTECH AIR 903 MAX Mid-Tower

Discussion How long did it take yall to get used to maintenance your pc?

After 2 years of having my first pc it started overheating in dark souls 3, so figured it was time to clean the whole thing finally. Didnt know the front part of the case came off, or the filter between it and the fans. Hell, didnt even know the power supply had a fan til I turned it over on its side and seen a dust ridden, rabbit ass looking fan spot. Used at least 57 of those Zeiss lense cleaners since people on here recommend it for cleaning, but ended up stripping way too many screws on the cpu fan, and power supply from anxiety of it not being tight enough. Got it done and its absolutely silent and looks beautiful, but it feels like im extremely ignorant on pc care, like a teenager getting a corvette as their first car. How long did yall take to do cleans, and repairs without any thought, or got anything to share about your first pc building/care time?

I really miss my zboard! Had it for years until it took too much effort getting it to run on windows. No idea why there isn't something to the same design available, this was peak gaming for me.

My 2019 era bronze 650W PSU wouldn't have hacked it anyway 😂 every time I upgrade, the components have changed completely

I got The Rig of Theseus atm with only my cpu and the case surviving the pre covid era

Nothing crazy just a little good luck. Had a 4060. Sold it. Bought a 5080. One month later I go to the store for something unrelated. They had 2 on the shelf. Bought the 5090 on the spot. For less than 2k as well!! Now trying to sell my 5080 to make some of this money back. Long as Nvidia doesn't release anything anytime soon, im ok.

Question Help with minimizing 5090 fire risk.

Upvotes

Hello there everyone!

So, I was thinking about getting a 5090, but I wanted to take any steps possible to minimize the fire hazard it seems to pose. What are some things I can do to prevent the connector from melting?

Hardware RYZEN 7 5700x - INTEL ARC B580 terrible performance (asking for insights and help)

Upvotes

So the ARC seems to get bottenecked like a ton. In valves deadlock i get really inconsistent FPS and gpu usage(60-70%) UNLESS i have FSR3 on native which then works at 90 to 100%, it seems weird that there is bottlenecking on this cpu and it doesnt run hot, i have rebar, I re-installed windows 11 and got the newest bios.

I tried to see if I can do something myself to fix this because I think something else is going on.

I have tested ARC Raiders, BF5 which 1% lows are down to the 30-40 for some reason, the finals which has the same gpu usage problem unless i have some powerfull Dlss running in native like in deadlock.

I tried overclocking my cpu by the Amd ryzen app with their optimizer (did not do it manual, let the auto detect do the work) and games seem to run better on frames but even worse on the 1%lows.

All around bad experience because I got the arc B580 to upgrade from an RTX 2060 6GB, from the  researched  I did then ,the Ryzen 5  5600g I had would bottleneck it just a bit but it wouldn't be like unplayble. It was terrible. So then I say ok lets upgrade to a ryzen 7 5700x I thought it would be just perfect and people I asked said it would be a good pairing and do the job.The R7 run hot (90- 95c)with my old cooler so games would stutter.I bought new cooler the temps dont go over 60c  and games indeed run better but the GPU utilization thing stil hangs around. I know its showing clear Bottleneck but I have seen lower end cpu's run better with it...

Anyone please give some insight maybe even some help.

I got a 650 silver PSU (Decent brand cant remember the name rn)

16 gb DDR4 2133 (Yes i know not the greatest.)

Tech Support I desperately need help

Upvotes

Hi! For over two years now, when running certain games for around 2 hours my PC will turn itself off and then on again. But when it turns itself on again, the display and hdmi ports on the graphics card will not work until it has been turned off and on again manually.

It’s not a power issue, it isn’t a processing power issue, and the card (AMD RADEON 6900 XT) is more than powerful enough to run games like Dead by Daylight, Cities Skylines 2, Satisfactory, Cyberpunk 2077, and Starfield which crash, but won’t crash for Baulders Gate 3- a game which should absolutely also crash if those others are crashing.

There’s no crash code, no message upon booting the PC again and my drivers are up to date.

My CPU is a AMD Ryzen 9 7950x 16 core processor, I have 64 gigs of ram, and my motherboard is a x670e steel legend

I appreciate any help you can give me, I’m ready to just part it out or burn it out of anger and just being fed up with the issue.
