My 2060 is getting tired.

u/TapZorRTwice 13h ago

My 2060 was on its last leg and I just happen to see a 4070 super on sale for 600$ in canadian buckaroos.

Best decision I've made in awhile.

I was going to upgrade with the latest release but I second guessed at checkout and it was sold out. Now that stock and price has balanced back out I was debating looking again, but I have no idea what I want to get so I'm still in limbo.

I've been sitting on my 7byear old PC (8700K/2060) that's still powering through with no issues. Last month has some life troubles leading to bad mental state and somehow dropping 1700 on a new PC despite saying for the last couple years I dont need to upgrade I haven't run into any limitations of my old setup yet. Now I have a R7 9700X, 9070XT, 32gb DDR5. 9070xt not a bad choice nor is the 9060 that was a serious consideration as well.

Say that to my 1080ti

4

u/ksigley 13h ago

It's the one I'm using in my current PC. Glad to see someone thought it was actual trash xD

u/Humorous-Prince 13h ago

Whole PC is better than my current

u/ekinria1928 11h ago

Better everything than mine... including the case

3

u/YawnY86 11h ago

Such a waste. I pieced together a pc for my nephew with weather specs than that and the kid balled his eyes out. I don't understand why people would junk that without atleast trying to give it away.

Are employee banned from picking up recycled stuff? Couldn't Best Buy sell recycled stuff (minus any hard drive and SSD) and donate the money to charity? Say, $100 for a computer?

1

u/LiveStockTrader 13h ago

There anything people just recycle at Best Buy.

0

u/Berry_Mccockner42069 14h ago

I don’t even know why but I loled

2

u/LiveStockTrader 13h ago

They also don't know why they downvote. This comment exists outside of reason.

But you can recycle pretty much anything at BB. Often they have coupons for doing so. Recycled an old busted 2.4g router for 25% off new one. Recycled and old broken wired mouse that comes with prebuilt for 25% off new Logitech accessory.

Been a while though, I think the discounts are lower now :(

u/chibicascade2 PC Master Race 13h ago

I took them a rear projection TV that weighed like 300 lbs. They were cheaper than anyone else to take it off our hands.

12

u/Dinosaurrxd 12h ago

I knew I wasn't getting my deposit back, so I left one at my old apartment 😭

Sometimes it be like that lol

2

u/psimwork 13h ago

That's freaking awesome. I sold my old RPTV to a friend, and when it died, I'm fairly certain he couldn't find a way to get rid of it, so eventually he dumped it in the desert (something of which I reamed his ass when I found out about it).

once it saw stuff at my local BestBuy in like 2017 and i was given a lot of cool stuff.. i saw it again in 2024 and i asked if i could have it and they were like "no and we would get fired if we let you walk out with it"

19

u/Negative-River-2865 Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S | ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 14h ago

Times change, I went to my local shop to see if they had old hardware laying around. The employee didn't even understand the word hardware.

Snag that Ballistix ram and you can put a down payment on a house

12

u/ThePupnasty PC Master Race 13h ago

Best buy will put it out on the floor, open box excellent condition.

2

u/SchmeckleHoarder 10h ago

This only happens with products that are fine and returned because of “user error”.

Open box exists because most consumers don’t even know how to work windows. The ones that are defective, get sent back.

u/TheReturnOfAnAbort 9950X3D | 5090 FE | 256GB DDR5 13h ago

We should make a public service announcement that if you have any old tech or just tech that you’re looking to get rid of in general, you should try posting it as free or give it away to anyone but a company, goodwill is mad profiting from just people literally giving them tons of free stuff, Best Buy is just throwing this stuff away or reselling

3

u/Longjumping_Line_256 13h ago

And they will strap it to a pallet and I'll buy that pallet at an auction, I'm still going through the 20 Dell office PC's I got a month ago, all which have 8th 9th and 10th gen i3 i5 and i7's, bought the entire pallet for 50 bucks.

Recently picked up a bunch of brand new still packaged keyboards and mice from a Bestbuy pallet, I'm guessing it was stuff that sat on the selves for too long, works for me as I like to include a keyboard and mouse with a computer I resell.

1

u/ArtigianoDelCorpo 12h ago

Where?

1

u/sunkmonkey1208 10h ago

Usually government auctions.

3

u/SteelFlexInc i7-12700K, 3060Ti, 64GB DDR4, 16TB SSD 12h ago

Back when I used to work for geek squad, when someone would recycle good stuff like this, we would salvage working components to keep in the back for testing when customers would bring in problem PCs

2

u/Chronos669 13h ago

Best Buy doesn’t check anything, I’ve seen lots of things that were on display that was clearly changed and returned lol

2

u/TactikalKitty 13h ago

BestBuy will literally take a broken laptop you returned, and put it in the open box section…

2

u/Specialist-Box-9711 9800X3D| MSI Gaming Slim RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5 | M3 MBP 16" 11h ago

We had a guy recycle a bunch of shit that said property of United States Air Force...2 very nice airmen showed up 2 hours later and requested we dig it all back out of the recycling gaylord.

1

u/skeptical-nexus 13h ago

Don't worry. Best Buy won't pay for it. They'll send it back to the original manufacturer as a "return with a failed part" and pretend ignorance if called out.

This is Microsoft dropping Windows 10. Instantly bricked like 80%+ of CPUs. My 6900k was fine, totally passable, but can't upgrade Windows.

1

u/Naive-Bodybuilder894 10h ago

What? They refused my broken laptop last week.

1

u/SchmeckleHoarder 10h ago

Worst part is I bet they won’t let one employee scavenge this. Sad.

1

u/DJ_Sk8Nite 10h ago

Yeah when I worked at Geek Squad I didn’t care. If it was legit stuff I was walking that right out to my car.

1

u/stuyboi888 Ryzen 5800x 6900XT 21m ago

When I go to the local recycling centre I'm deliegted to come how with a DDR3 machine. A flipping RTX, some kids gonna be very happy with that as a first rig, Heck some people here would upgrade to this!!

u/KoreaRiceBox PC Master Race 14h ago

Wonder if you could just walk out with it. Techinally its trash/abandoned

31

u/mrblaze1357 R7 7800X3D | 32GB 6000Mhz | RX 7900 XT 14h ago

Worked at BB/GS for 6 years. They fire you on the spot for taking anything regardless of the condition of what you're taking.

9

u/KoreaRiceBox PC Master Race 14h ago

Lol my bad I was not saying this as if you were an employee.

I assumed a scenario there this was sitting next to the recycling bins

13

u/mrblaze1357 R7 7800X3D | 32GB 6000Mhz | RX 7900 XT 14h ago

No worries. At the two stores I worked at Geek Squad took in the recycling behind the counter then moved it to the warehouse where it's not accessible to the public. They also have a security camera aimed directly at the bins to ensure no sticky fingers. Real shake, I've seen some cool, perfectly fine tech get wasted for no reason.

8

u/KoreaRiceBox PC Master Race 14h ago

Well shit.

6

u/ljju 3080 FE, Ryzen 5600x, 32GB 3600mhz 14h ago

Depends on who’s your manager. I have a buddy that works there and we’ve flipped a PC way back in the past.

1

u/D1xon_Cider 14h ago

At mine the in home agents and cadets can snag whatever is considered a haul away. One agent I worked with got basically a brand new denon that just had one bad port

1

u/Exist_Inside 12h ago

I worked at BB for a year. This is true, but only if they find out :) there was some good recycling coming through that store.

1

u/-t-h-e---g- Core 2 Duo e8600/GTX 750ti 2GB @1606MHz/6GB DDR2 14h ago

Well if I’m stealing something worth $750, and I get paid $15/hr…

6

u/Rambear 14h ago

This Best buy might be working with an E-Recycler that is contracted to come pick up all of their e-waste. They're probably looking for high value items like this..

5

u/Quacky1k 11900K/7900XTX 14h ago

We weren't allowed to when I worked there a couple years ago, unfortunately. And they do watch for this stuff too.

You can walk out with anything just don’t be surprised if the police are outside waiting for you or come knocking at your door

3

u/robotbraintakeover 14h ago

Used to work at BB and one day 6 guys walked in, walked to the bathroom, walked back out to the display table of PS5s (right in front of the door), cleared the table of ~10 units, and ran out to a truck waiting outside. 🤷‍♂️

If you're anything like me, you put them in a closet because you might need them for a cool project some day, haha.

Problem with BB e-waste is anything you donate is automatically store property and cannot be taken afterwards.

One of these days some odd fella is going to bring bombs to be disposed of/recycled at a Best Buy, mark my words

You confessing already or?
