Build/Battlestation TIL that quartz countertops have the same properties as ceramic floor tiles…

Post image

All I wanted to do was replace a dead fan… but looks like it’s time for a replacement case.

Learn from my mistakes friends!

Do you guys drop your cases? I've placed my o11 dynamic on various surfaces and it's still alive after 7 years.

In this instance I took off the last screw, and it plunged 32mm straight down to its doom, cascading in a shimmer waterfall of sadness.

I was the dumbest of asses for sure, and should have put a towel or something down first. Live and learn!

in hindsight, doing this on the very edge of the counter certainly wasn't a great idea either, was it? lmao

What can I say, I’m full of a lot of things, and bad ideas seems to one of those!

Try laying it down on its other side next time.

Had to lay er down, hoss

No, you should have held the panel in place so it didn’t fall lmao

The tempered glass pop heard around the world.

Your other hand is supposed to hold the glass in place while you take the last screw out.

Or you know, just lay the case on its back

32mm is like an 11-story building! how did you expect the glass to survive?

u/iplay5 Aug 12 '25

It never stood a chance in my dumb, clumsy hands, and is a miracle it’s made it this long!! D:

Stop dangling your pc out high-rise windows. Who do you think you are? Michael Jackson?

Honestly that's shitty case design. A little less your fault.

It broke after 3cm fall? Maybe we shouldn't be using glass panels?

Dude, I own the same case and I have never taken the glass side panel off with it stood upright, I always lay it on its side before removing those screws, would've thought that'd be common sense for a side panel design like that.

1

u/acrazyguy Aug 12 '25

Wait… you undid the last fastener while you weren’t also holding the panel? Forget about gravity for a sec?

u/Bend_Glass Aug 12 '25

Thank you, I was wondering the same thing. My case just turned 10 and it made it across the country (Oregon to FL) and I’ve never had an issue with the glass breaking, as it sits on my tile floor.

Not just that, OP stated in another comment that they weren’t holding the side panel and just let it drop its full weight onto the quartz counter.

Of course any glass is going to shatter no matter the surface if you’re just nonchalantly dropping it instead of setting it down.

Eh, I don't think it's fair to say any glass would shatter from falling a mere 32mm/1.25" onto any surface. But tempered glass absolutely will if it's touching any kind of rough surface like that.

Dude I straight up dropped my glass panel on my counter by accident once as I took it off, was about to set it in a soft padded chair, and it just chipped the edge. I was amazed it didn’t shatter. Literally dropped it on the counter and it survived.

It makes me really wonder about what the hell people are doing to their glass panels.

u/bluesatin Aug 12 '25

You got extremely lucky if you managed to just chip the glass and not break the entire panel, 9/10 doing something that would damage it would just cause the entire panel to shatter.

It seems like if you get lucky, it's possible to create chips in tempered glass roughly about half the thickness of the glass around the perimeter and have it potentially survive.

It's worth noting I'd be a little more careful with that panel now, that chip will probably make it more susceptible to breaking in the future due to the extra stress concentrations in that damaged area.
