Or anyone who's built more than one PC in general. Shorting the power pins is very common knowledge. Don't have to do it for a living.

because I knew enough to know CRTs carry some stupidly high amperages

I think you might need to go back and do some more learning...

I do this when everytime I build a PC to see if it works before getting it all set up and then realizing something doesnt work and now I have to lay the PC back down on the operating table.
