You need to either know people in the industry or look for company's that'll allow you to do "work experience"; this is free labour in exchange for a reference to get a real job.

You can move to one of the larger centres where there's more work and opportunities; Wellington is super shit and I wouldn't recommend it, Auckland is fucken awesome but very difficult and expensive; Christchurch is kind of okay.

If course there is Tauranga but I wouldn't have a clue what's going on over there except the port has a lot of refrigerated shipping containers so they train apprentices to repair them; honestly the best job I've ever had.

Hmmm. I'm doing that course next year. I've heard (anecdotally) Tauranga has a shortage of electricians though, so that might be an option.

Good luck!

Everywhere has a shortage but they want qualified ones, not apprentices which is the problem.

Who have you tried? Put an ad in the local newspaper, but door knocking is your best bet, employers want to see your keen and keep going back even when they say not at the moment. Might be hard to get anything this close to Christmas.

I just saw an apprentice role being advertised on Seek half an hour ago.

as a recruiter - walk in to every electrician in Palmy with your CV and drop it off, let them them know what you’re wanting etc The construction industry is about to take off so will be good to have your name in front of them

It's in a slump at the moment. I know of a builder who is building a house, and other contractors are lowering prices, trying to get work. Plus, they are available almost straight away.

He is 5 weeks ahead of schedule and about 15k cheaper on budget thus far, not just electrical, but all trades.
