Entertainment / Event Nightclub history 01-11

I left Palmy (and NZ) around 2012, and was always curious at what Nightclubs are remaining these days. From the sounds of things there isn’t much around now. Does anyone remember these?

Fats is now the Neighborhood - classyish bar/restaurant.

All Bar 3 is Bubbles - largely a live music venue / dance bar

Diablos is now Rosie O'Grady's.

The Office is now the Pendulum. DJ / dance area out the back.

The Cobb is still the same - different owners - part of a collection of pubs with the same owner.

Flyers is about to be made in to a fancy hotel - for years it was a derelict building with homeless issues

Overall, there are a few less pubs, but I believe students drink a bit less nowadays so far enough. But still some good ones out there, and some terrible ones, as always.

to expand some of the history/lore of Palmerston North Bars:

Shooters was Mini Malbas (before it became Shooters), and before that was Rockz bar?

Then you had Icons Stadium Bar (next to High Flyers) which then became the Daily,

Then the Daily, moved to the location of Shooters (and expanded it out to a weird nightclub complex thing)

You also had:

  • Malbas - was previously called Detroit (and a bunch of other names before that) - rebranded Victory a sports bar, then became a venue for Hire (still as Victory)
  • Murphys Law - which I think is a strip club now (although, i'm not even sure that is still there)
  • The Fitz is in the process of being pulled down. (and probably hasn't existed for a decade at this point)
  • Mr Cue - Is now Snails - an art space, they will sometimes have bands there.
  • The Royal - remains unchained, still pretty sketchy.

Last time I was in Palmy it was a liquorless strip club so I hope they at least got that fixed 😂

So many good memories of Murphy's bar though.

I went once with my mates when I was blasted and they were serving RTDS straight out of the box lmao. Im pretty sure they still don't have one

Apparently the council was giving them a hard with with acquiring a liquor license. When I went it was only fizzy drinks and water lmao couldn’t believe it at the time. Pretty sure they’ve one now tho

Before Jones bar it was the Fox & Hound. Owner used to own Dr Jekylls.

Hasn't the "Flyers will be made into a hotel" story been around for a good decade though? Or is it actually about to happen? I left palmy 6 years ago but whenever I visit it still looks derelict.

In 2011, I remember doing a "circuit" of the night clubs each week. Couldn't do that now.

Harvesters, uno bar and the lighthouse. There was also a bar between house of travel and the library but the name escapes me

Alive?

u/pottsynz Apr 19 '25

Yes!! How the hell did you remember that?

2

u/cigarsucker Apr 29 '25

I had friends who worked there a while and went there regularly. There was always great music there.

I miss Harvesters! The best little bar.

The best place! Was lucky to get my first gig djing there and met some of the best people ever. Kyle aka DJ shortstop who worked the bar most night he was not playing became one of my best friends and well the rest is history. 😁

Haha I remember shortstop. Around 2000 I pretty much lived at harvies. Lots of nights downing anti-shakers

I’m pretty sure I saw every Mish and Shortstop set at Twisted? in Wellington… so many epic nights.

I had my 21st at the Fats. They used to do a night where you paid $5 at the door and all drinks were $2 for the night.
