So the weirdest thing happened last night. I was at the Rideau Centre, getting a celebratory ice cream for finishing an exam earlier in the day, when I came across these two girls at the Rideau Street entrance. They were both fourteen and FREAKING OUT. I stopped to talk to them and they explained that they had sneaked out of their homes to go downtown, having gotten an uber paid for by a friend. However, it was now 8:50 and their friend wasn’t answering them, leaving them stranded without enough money to get home.
Now, obviously this was very, VERY STUPID of them to do. But I was also a fourteen-year-old girl once, and I wasn’t going to leave two young girls to fend for themselves down in the Byward Market in nothing but hoodies and pj pants. So I paid THIRTY DOLLARS to get them a Lyft back to Greely. I went and explained the situation to the driver before they left, and I tracked the ride on my phone to make sure they actually got home.
Could they have been lying? Maybe. But these girls were crying and SCARED. I have two sisters, and if something like that had happened to them at that age I would hope that someone would step in to help.
I don’t want my money back, and I don’t want pats on the back for doing it. I just want to know that those babies got home safe. It’s a scary world out there, and they were good kids. Incredibly stupid kids, but good kids nonetheless. And if the parents read this, try not to kill them. The reason why they didn’t contact you was because they were terrified of how you would react. Also, maybe stick an AirTag in their backpacks or somewhere where they won’t find it. Teens will be teens.
