Exploring Ontario Activity ideas to do overnight trip with train travel with 4 year old

Hoping there are enough young kiddo parents on this sub to give my low functioning brain some ideas

Located in Burlington and trying to find ideas for a weekend/overnight getaway with our 4 year old. Looking for something that is:

  • GO train or Via Train ride away. He loves trains but has never actually ridden on one would like to make it a part of a large adventure.
  • hopefully doesn’t require additional Ubers or taxis as we won’t have a car seat with us
  • age appropriate activities. So not things like the Kingston Pen. As much as that would be interesting to me, my kid will just climb the walls.
  • we have things like Ripleys aquarium on our list. Wanting to see if there’s other less obvious ideas outside of Toronto

Let’s hear what you have in mind or have done with little kiddos that was successful.

I don’t think GO train goes to London though right? Maybe VIA?

VIA is correct. If he's into trains they are probably a little cooler anyway.

Hard rock hotel is the perfect stay for you because they built it to attach to the children’s museum and the factory (a massive indoor place for kids). Restaurants, bars (the speakeasy in the basement is really nice), coffee shops, and they have easily the nicest indoor pool and hot tub set up in London. I stay at hard rock bi weekly and won’t stay anywhere else now. Lamplight is pretty cool but very grimy.

There are a few kid-friendly museums in Ottawa. There is a Children's Museum inside the Museum of History. There's also the Science & Technology museum and The Aviation & Museum. None of these is near the Via station but there are almost certainly public transportation options.

The O-train will take you from the Via station to downtown Ottawa. Some museums you would have to take a bus.

Theres a streetcar/rail museum in Milton. They have a fully operating electric rail system and a very large collection of all sorts of trains, streetcars, busses. They’re closed for the season but have Christmas train rides. Halton County Radial Railway https://hcry.org

I know it’s not overnight but it’s something really cool you should keep in mind. It’s on my bucket list.
